From Wheelchair to Cane: Elective Transtibial Amputations in a Patient with Spina Bifida.

Spina bifida is associated with foot deformities, which may lead to foot ulcers, osteomyelitis, and limb amputation. Calcanectomy and Symes amputations have been reported successful in spina bifida. There is lack of evidence for transtibial amputations. This case describes a 27-yr-old woman with L4 level spina bifida who underwent bilateral transtibial amputations. She ambulated with bilateral ankle foot orthoses and canes until age 22. At age 22, she had bilateral foot reconstructive surgeries complicated by nonunion, ulcerations, and osteomyelitis. She was using a wheelchair by age 25. She h

A detachable electronic device for use with a long white cane to assist with mobility.

Vision-impaired individuals often use a long white cane to assist them with gathering information about their surroundings. However, these aids are generally not used to detect obstacles above knee height. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a low-cost, custom-built electronic device clipped onto a traditional cane can provide adequate vibratory warning to the user of obstacles above knee height. Sixteen normally sighted blindfolded individuals participated in two mobility courses which they navigated using a normal white cane and a white cane with the electronic device attached.

The morphology and morphometry of the epididymis in the greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus Temmincks).

The structure and morphometry of the epididymis in the greater cane rat were studied in this work. In assessing the morphology and characterising the morphometric values, a total of 15 adult male greater cane rats, bred and raised in captivity, were used. All the animals had brownish perineal staining, which was taken as index of sexual maturity in male cane rats, and they were maintained on elephant grass stems with water given ad libitum. From this work, the epididymis of the greater cane rat was observed to have a mean weight of 0.0365 ± 0.091 g, forming about 0.016% of the total body weigh

Tranquillization of cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus) with a depot neuroleptic (pipothiazine palmitate).

Stress-induced self-trauma is a major cause of mortality among captive cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus). Six subadult female cane rats were injected with a long-acting neuroleptic drug (pipothiazine palmitate 25 mg/kg), and an equal number were injected with isotonic saline. Their behaviour and reactions to stimuli were recorded daily. After 5 weeks, treated animals continued to display significantly less stress-related behaviour than the control group. In addition, two abbreviated studies were conducted. Eleven subadult males were treated identically to the females. Their behaviour was rec

Morbidity due to Schistosoma mansoni among sugar-cane cutters in Zimbabwe.

Quantitative determination of Schistosoma mansoni infection was carried out on 1995 cane cutters of the Hippo Valley and Triangle Sugar Estates. A total of 315 cutters were chosen for the study on the basis of S. mansoni infection and lack of anti-schistosomal chemotherapy during the previous three years. Stool consistency and blood and mucus in stool were determined for all the infected cutters. Overt and occult blood in stool was detected in a significantly high number of infected people compared to the control subjects (chi 2 p less than 0.001). However, the blood loss was found to have no

The Control of Canine Halitosis By Sugar Cane Polyphenols: Effects and Potential Mechanisms.

Halitosis in companion animals lacks safe, effective long-term solutions. This study evaluated sugar cane polyphenols (SP) as an oral deodorizer for dogs using acute and 30 day intervention trials. Efficacy was evaluated by sensory scoring, volatile profiling, microbiome analysis, and mechanistic assays. Oral malodor was significantly reduced in both the acute (0-120 min) spray test and the 30 day SP intervention, accompanied by decreases in volatile sulfur compounds and indole. Mechanistic evidence indicated that SP interacts with odorants through noncovalent interactions and reduces protein

A Study on the Acceptance of Smart Cane Technology Among Chinese Older Adults.

Background: Although smart products improve older adults' quality of life, their acceptance and usage of smart assistive devices remain relatively low, and the influencing factors remain unclear. Methods: This study takes canes, which are commonly used by older adults, as the research object. To explore older adults' acceptance of smart canes and the influencing factors, we constructed an integrated framework based on the extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which incorporates multiple variables: Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Attitude (ATT), Social Influence (

A case of epithelioid glioblastoma with lung metastases in a young Cane Corso dog.

Astrocytomas are relatively common primary brain tumours of humans and companion animals. In dogs, they represent approximately 17-28% of primary central nervous system tumours. However, extracranial metastasis is extremely rare. This case report describes a grade IV astrocytoma (glioblastoma) in the cerebrum of a young Cane Corso dog with pulmonary metastases. The diagnosis was obtained via histopathological morphology and immunophenotyping, which showed strong positivity for glial fibrillary acidic protein, vimentin and connexin-43. The glioblastoma in this Cane Corso had epithelioid morphol

Are patients with hemiplegic stroke really walking with a cane fitted at the greater trochanter?

The purpose of this study was to determine the cane lengths currently used by patients with hemiplegic stroke for ambulatory assistance. The sample consisted of 116 adults with hemiplegic stroke. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square test for trend were conducted to examine the distributions of cane lengths, which were classified as follows: reaching >2 cm below the greater trochanter (GT), reaching from <2 cm below to <2 cm above the GT, or reaching >2 cm above the GT. Cane lengths reaching >2 cm above the GT were most common (range 62%-88%). No difference in mean cane length was found with r

Immunostimulating and growth-promoting effects of sugar cane extract (SCE) in chickens.

Polymorphonuclear cells of the peripheral blood in the chicken significantly increased their phagocytosis when cultured with sugar cane extract (SCE; 250-1,000 microg/ml) for 24 hr. Chickens orally administered SCE (500 mg/kg/day) for 3 or 6 consecutive days at 1 week of age showed significantly higher body weight and gain in body weight/day and a lower food conversion ratio within the growing period of 6 weeks than physiological saline-administered control chickens. Furthermore, oral administration of SCE also resulted in significantly higher immune responses against sheep red blood cells and

Grape Canes (Vitis vinifera L.) Applications on Packaging and Particleboard Industry: New Bioadhesive Based on Grape Extracts and Citric Acid.

The main by-product generated in the wine industry are the grape canes, derived from the pruning process. In order to increase the valorisation possibilities of this highly polyphenolic lignocellulosic material, this work focuses on its applicability in the materials industry. As a first step, we demonstrate the viability of using grape cane particles as raw material for particleboard production, combined with a melamine formaldehyde urea (MFU) binder. In addition, looking for the application of these particleboards in the food packaging industry, particleboards based on grape canes were also

Variability-based assessment of assisted gait using a multi-sensor instrumented cane.

The biomechanics of walking with assistive canes are not well understood clinically, despite their long history. Canes are also often misused or not used at all once taken home, despite the known benefits of proper use. To help clinicians and users evaluate and monitor cane use at home and in the community, a multi-sensor instrumented cane and interpretable gait performance metrics have been proposed. This study investigated the effects of an instrumented cane on gait speed, stride interval, and gait variability in 15 healthy individuals. Participants were asked to walk for 10 min under three

Effects of cane use on the kinematic and kinetic of lower-extremity joints in inexperienced users.

The cane is commonly prescribed for the elderly to maintain balance and enhance independent mobility. However, improper use of cane can increase the risk of falling. Understanding the characteristics of cane gait is critical for better establishing proper cane usage norms. The paper aimed to investigate effects of cane use on kinematics and kinetics of lower extremities in the elderly and the young to guide the development of adaptive cane gait. Twenty participants (10 elder and 10 young) were recruited and walked at a self-comfortable speed or with a cane in a two-point gait. The spatiotempor

Effects of using cane and vestibular rehabilitation on the walking function in elderly patients with dizziness.

OBJECTIVE: Adults over the age of 65 years with balance disorders are at about twice the risk of falls, compared with those without balance disorders. Falls contribute to about 74% of the proximal femoral fractures commonly seen in the elderly. Since balance disorders are more prevalent in older adults than in younger adults, it is important to deal with balance disorders in older adults to prevent falls and the resulting deterioration in their ADL (activity of daily living). In this study, we investigated the effects of vestibular rehabilitation (VR) and cane use on improving gait and balance
