The synthesis and anion binding properties of a new class of calixpyrrole analogue, containing two carbazole subunits in lieu of two of the four acetone bridging elements normally found in calix[4]pyrrole, is described. A series of 3,6-di-tert-butyl carbazole-functionalized 9-borafluorene derivatives have been prepared with outstandingly strong photoluminescence with quantum yields up to ca. 100 and 94% for Mes*BF-pCz in solution and film, respectively. 1,3,5-Tris(trifluoromethyl)benzene (FMes)-substituted compounds exhibit enhanced Lewis acidity with coordination to weak nucleophiles like tetrahydrofuran, resulting in a long afterglow at low temperature. The large two-photon absorption cross-section of ca. 1103 GM for Mes*BF-pCz at 800 nm in CH2Cl2 indicated its potential application in bioimaging.

Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) are emerging halogenated contaminants, yet their occurrence and sediment-water partitioning remain poorly characterized. The [4 + 2] annulation of β-formyl ketones with an indole has been developed for the regioselective synthesis of diphenyl-substituted carbazoles in the presence of a catalytic amount of iodine. The 1,4-dicarbonyl compound containing a phenyl group at the α-position of an aldehyde group reacts more readily with indoles to form carbazole derivatives. Bottom sediments of the North American Great Lakes are characterized by a high loading (over 3,000 tonnes) of polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs). The origin of this environmental contaminant loading is unclear. The catalytic reactions of indoles with CO2 and phenylsilane afforded indolo[3,2-b]carbazoles, where the fused benzene ring was constructed by forming two C-H bonds and four C-C bonds with two CO2 molecules via deoxygenative conversions. Nine-membered cyclophanes made up of three indoles and three CO2 molecules were also obtained, where the cyclophane framework was constructed by forming six C-H bonds and six C-C bonds. These multicomponent cascade reactions giving completely different carbocycles were switched simply by choosing the solvent, acetonitrile or ethyl acetate.

The title carbazole derivative, C14H11N3, was prepared by reacting 1-hy-droxy-8-methyl-9H-carbazole-2-carbaldehyde with hydrazine hydrate. In the solid state, the fused-ring system is slightly puckered, the dihedral angle between the planes of the outer rings being 2.24 (7)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by {N-H}2⋯N hy-dro-gen bonds to generate [010] chains, and weak C-H⋯π contacts consolidate the structure. A Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates that the most important contributions to the crystal packing are from H⋯H (43.1%), C⋯H/H⋯C (36.8%) and N⋯H/H⋯N (15.3%) inter-actions.
