Dyeing of synthetic fiber-based wool blended fabrics in supercritical carbon dioxide.

Development of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) dyeing technology for natural fabrics and their blended fabrics is essential for the textile industry due to environmental and economic considerations. Wool (W), polyester (PET) and nylon (N) fabrics and their wool/polyester (W/PET) and wool/nylon (W/N) blended fabrics were dyed in SC-CO2 medium with a synthesized reactive disperse dye containing a vinylsulphone (VS) reactive group, which behaves as a disperse dye for synthetic fibers and a reactive dye for protein fibers. The SC-CO2 dyeing performance of all fabrics was investigated in term

Fertility Sparing Procedure using Carbon Dioxide Fiber Laser Vaporization of Ovarian Endometrioma.

The surgical management of endometrioma is still a matter of debate. Cystectomy, which is recognized as the standard technique, seems to be associated with a potential reduction in the ovarian reserve due to the inadvertent removal and thermal damage of healthy ovarian tissue. New ablative techniques with reduced tissue penetration depth and less thermal spread to the surrounding parenchyma may represent a viable alternative to cystectomy. For these reasons, the aim of this manuscript is to demonstrate the ablation of the endometrioma capsule using a CO2 fiber laser technique and discuss the c

Durability and Long-Term Performance Prediction of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Laminates.

The feasibility of strengthening deteriorated or under-capacity concrete structures with external carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates has been widely validated in the literature. However, there is a lack of knowledge on the in situ long-term performance and age-related environmental degradation of the mechanical properties of the laminates. The current study involved the immersion of coupons from a common new CFRP laminate in heated water at 23, 45, and 60 °C for 224 days. The coupons were then tested for residual tensile properties, such as tensile capacity and elastic modulus, u

Carbon-nanotube-interfaced glass fiber scaffold for regeneration of transected sciatic nerve.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), with their unique and unprecedented properties, have become very popular for the repair of tissues, particularly for those requiring electrical stimuli. Whilst most reports have demonstrated in vitro neural cell responses of the CNTs, few studies have been performed on the in vivo efficacy of CNT-interfaced biomaterials in the repair and regeneration of neural tissues. Thus, we report here for the first time the in vivo functions of CNT-interfaced nerve conduits in the regeneration of transected rat sciatic nerve. Aminated CNTs were chemically tethered onto the surface

Effects of Heat Treatment Atmosphere and Temperature on the Properties of Carbon Fibers.

In this study, carbon fibers were heat-treated in a nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere according to temperature to elucidate the mechanism of chemical state changes and oxygen functional group changes on the carbon fiber surface by analyzing the mechanical and chemical properties of carbon fibers. Carbon fibers before and after heat treatment were analyzed using FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning), UTM (Universal Tensile Testers), XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), and surface-free energy. In the nitrogen atmosphere, which is an inert gas, the tensile strength was equivalent to that of the virgi

Carbon chloride-core fibers for soliton mediated supercontinuum generation.

We report on soliton-fission mediated infrared supercontinuum generation in liquid-core step-index fibers using highly transparent carbon chlorides (CCl4, C2Cl4). By developing models for the refractive index dispersions and nonlinear response functions, dispersion engineering and pumping with an ultrafast thulium fiber laser (300 fs) at 1.92 μm, distinct soliton fission and dispersive wave generation was observed, particularly in the case of tetrachloroethylene (C2Cl4). The measured results match simulations of both the generalized and a hybrid nonlinear Schrödinger equation, with the latter

Characterization of Highly Filled Glass Fiber/Carbon Fiber Polyurethane Composites with the Addition of Bio-Polyol Obtained through Biomass Liquefaction.

This work aims to investigate the process of obtaining highly filled glass and carbon fiber composites. Composites were manufactured using previously obtained cellulose derived polyol, polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI). As a catalyst, dibutyltin dilaurate 95% and Dabco® 33-LV were used. It was found that the addition of carbon and glass fibers into the polymer matrix causes an increase in the mechanical properties such as impact and flexural strength, Young's modulus, and hardness of the material. Moreover, the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed a significant increase in t

Porous texture evolution in Nomex-derived activated carbon fibers.

In the present work, the textural evolution of a series of activated carbon fibers with increasing burn-off degree, prepared by the pyrolysis and steam activation of Nomex aramid fibers, is followed by measurements of physical adsorption of N(2) (77 K) and CO(2) (273 K) and immersion calorimetry into different liquids (dichloromethane, benzene, cyclohexane). The immersion calorimetry results are discussed in depth, paying special attention to the choice of the reference material. The activated carbon fibers studied possess an essentially homogeneous microporous texture, which suggests that the

Comparative Evaluation of Fracture Resistance of Carbon Fiber Posts and Glass Fiber Posts in Permanent Anterior Teeth: An In Vitro Study.

Introduction Dental caries and traumatic injuries often lead to tooth loss in adolescents and adults, necessitating endodontic treatment and subsequent restoration. Restoring such teeth presents a challenge due to varying degrees of substance loss. After endodontic treatment, the choice of an appropriate post is crucial for long-term stability. While metal posts are sturdy, they lack aesthetics and may cause root fractures. Fiber posts, such as carbon and glass fiber, offer improved aesthetics and mechanical properties, but their comparative performance warrants investigation. Materials and me

Factory site analysis of respirable fibers generated during the process of cutting and grinding of carbon fibers-reinforced plastics.

OBJECTIVES: Carbon fibers are used in a variety of industrial applications, based on their lightweight and high stiffness properties. There is little information on the characteristics and exposure levels of debris generated during the factory processing of carbon fibers or their composites. This study revisits the general assumption that carbon fibers or their debris released during composite processing are considered safe for human health. METHODS: The present interventional study was conducted at a factory located in Japan, and involved on-site collection of debris generated during the ind

Interfacial Enhancement of Polyethylene Fiber-Reinforced ECC via Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Functionalization.

Polyethylene (PE) fibers are promising reinforcements for engineered cementitious composites (ECC); however, their highly hydrophobic nature and inherent chemical inertness limit their reinforcing effectiveness. This study investigated the use of different types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to modify PE fibers under varying immersion times. Microstructural characterizations were conducted to investigate the effects of MWCNTs type and immersion time on the surface properties of PE fibers, while mechanical testing was undertaken to evaluate the mechanical performance of the resultin

Iron-Oxide Nanoarrays Covered Carbon Fiber Promotes Ammonia Electrosynthesis and Multi-Scenario Applications.

The development of electrocatalysts with complex environmental adaptability is the key path to promote the directional conversion of nitrate into high value-added ammonia. Herein, low-cost self-supporting carbon fiber was used as a carrier to successfully prepare uniform-sized Fe2O3 nanoarrays with four-corner double cone morphology (named Fe2O3/CF) through a one-step in situ growth method. Fe2O3/CF exhibits excellent performance in the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia: it maintains stable activity in a wide pH range and exhibits significant resistance to common interfering ion

Boosting the adsorption performance of ethanol on surface chemistry modified activated carbon fiber.

As a potential adsorption material, it is still a challenge for activated carbon fiber (ACF) in efficient adsorption of ethanol due to its nonpolar surface, which is mainly emitted from the grain drying industry. This study prepared surface polarity-modified ACF using the heteroatom doping method. The modified ACF possessed a richer array of strongly polar oxygen/nitrogen-containing functional groups (primarily phenolic hydroxyl and lactone groups), a larger specific surface area, and a more developed micropore structure. The adsorption capacities of ethanol for O-ACF and N-ACF were 4.110 mmol

Fabricating Thermoconductive Phase-Change Fiber via Solvent-Regulated Encapsulation in Carbon Nanotube Network.

Personal thermal management (PTM) systems are pivotal for energy-efficient thermal regulation. However, conventional phase change fibers (PCFs) are limited by insufficient latent heat capacity and phase change materials (PCMs) leakage. To address these challenges, we encapsulated polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a phase change material within a continuous carbon nanotubes (CNTs) network by coagulation bath solvent regulation. After optimizing the CNTs network contraction effect by controlling the ethanol (EtOH)/water content ratio, the resultant PEG/CNTFs(50wt%EtOH) (obtained from a 50 wt % EtOH c

Study on the Transverse Properties of T800-Grade Unidirectional Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymers.

This paper focuses on the transverse tensile and compressive mechanical properties of T800-grade unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs). Firstly, transverse tensile and compressive tests were conducted on UD composite laminates, yielding corresponding stress-strain curves. The results indicated that, for tension, the transverse tensile modulus, strength, and failure strain were 8.7 GPa, 64 MPa, and 0.74%, respectively, whereas for compression, these values were 8.4 GPa, 197.1 MPa, and 3.43%, respectively. The experimental curves indicated brittle failure under tensile loa

Automated Foreign Object Detection for Carbon Fiber Laminates Using High-Resolution Ultrasound Testing.

Carbon fiber laminates have become popular in the manufacturing industry for their many desirable properties, like good vibration damping, high strength-to-weight ratio, toughness, high dimensional stability, and low coefficient of thermal expansion. During the manufacturing process, undesirable foreign objects, such as peel-ply strips, gloving material, and Kapton film, can be introduced into the part which can lead to a localized weakness. These manufacturing defects can function as stress concentration points and oftentimes cause a premature catastrophic failure. In this study, a method usi

Radiographic imaging of carbon fiber implants in the appendicular skeleton in orthopedic oncology.

Carbon fiber/poly-ether-ether-ketone implants are increasingly being used in orthopedic oncology. An understanding of how to evaluate the normal appearance of these implants is critical for detecting any failures or complications that may arise. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide primarily a radiographic review of the normal radiographic appearance of carbon fiber-reinforced poly-ether-ether-ketone implants in the appendicular skeleton with some cross-sectional imaging discussion. We additionally aim to highlight some of the unique clinical benefits compared to metal implants, review
