Operational Carbon Footprint of a Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit at a Regional Hospital in Japan.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gastrointestinal endoscopy is resource-intensive, but no carbon footprint data have been reported from a Japanese facility, and published estimates differ widely in system boundary. We quantified the operational carbon footprint of an endoscopy unit at a Japanese regional hospital and identified which emission sources are amenable to unit-level intervention. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, we analyzed 794 consecutive procedures performed over 5 months at a 150-bed regional public hospital. Emissions from electricity, patient travel, medical waste, consu

Ecotoxicity and carbon footprint of commonly used antibiotics: Moving towards environmentally sustainable use.

INTRODUCTION: The environmental impact of antibiotics is described as high, although it has never been precisely assessed. We evaluated the environmental impact of some antibiotics. METHODS: Environmental impact was measured by (i) carbon footprint (CF) through Life Cycle Assessment and (ii) ecotoxicity, assessed by the Risk Quotients for the risk of antimicrobial resistance development (RQ-R), calculated from median environmental concentrations and theoretical Predicted No-Effect Concentrations (PNECs). RESULTS: Production of antibiotics in Europe reduces CF compared to production in Asia.

Unraveling the Carbon Footprint: How Ti3C2Tx MXene Stability Affects CO2 Photoreduction on TiO2.

MXenes are promising cocatalysts for CO2 photoreduction (CO2RR) on semiconductors like TiO2. However, their inherent hydrolytic instability can produce carbonaceous gases that are identical to the target products. This study systematically investigates this interplay for a model Ti3C2Tx/TiO2 system. We first demonstrate that aqueous Ti3C2Tx ink undergoes continuous hydrolysis under ambient conditions, releasing CH4, CO, CO2, and C2 hydrocarbons, a process that is significantly accelerated by visible light via a photothermal mechanism. Composite catalysts were synthesized and characterized, con

Carbon Footprint Analysis of an Outpatient Dermatology Practice at an Academic Medical Center.

IMPORTANCE: There is growing awareness of the US health sector's substantial contribution to the country's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, exacerbating the health threats from climate change. Reducing health care's environmental impact requires understanding its carbon emissions, but there are few published audits of health systems and fewer comprehensive emissions analyses at the clinic or department level. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the annual GHG emissions from a large outpatient dermatology practice, compare relative sources of emissions, and identify actionable targets. DESIGN AND SETTING:

Environmental Impact Assessment of Intravenous Versus Subcutaneous Monoclonal Antibodies: A Carbon Footprint Analysis.

PURPOSE: The development of subcutaneous (SC) formulations for monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), as an alternative to conventional intravenous (IV) infusion, represents a shift in health care delivery. The relative environmental impact of these two administration methods is not well understood. Minimizing the environmental footprint of health care is crucial due to its substantial contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study compared the carbon footprint of SC and IV administration using pertuzumab/trastuzumab as a case example. METHODS: A Life Cycle Assessment was conducted to comp

Herpes zoster in older adults: Impact on carbon footprint in the United States.

We provide estimates for (I) annual herpes zoster (HZ) cases, (II) carbon costs related to healthcare utilization, and (III) annual carbon emissions due to HZ among ≥50 years of age (YOA) United States (US) population. We estimated the annual number of HZ cases in the US based on available incidence data and demographic data of individuals ≥50 YOA. Both the healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) associated with HZ cases and the unit carbon dioxide equivalent (i.e. CO2e) costs associated with each type of HCRU in the US were estimated based on literature and studies available online. The carbon

The Power of Education to Reduce the Carbon Footprint of Volatile Anesthetics in Clinical Practice.

BACKGROUND: Due to their chemical nature as fluorinated hydrocarbon compounds, volatile anesthetics are highly potent greenhouse gases, with desflurane having by far the largest CO 2 -equivalent (CO 2 e) footprint. In everyday clinical practice, the CO 2 e footprint can easily be reduced through the increased use of propofol or sevoflurane as well as low- and minimal-flow techniques or through the more frequent use of regional anesthesia techniques. We wanted to assess to what extent educational measures on sustainability aspects of the use of volatile anesthetics had an impact on daily practi

The carbon footprint of beef and beef × dairy crossbred steers under different growing regimens.

Beef × dairy crossbred steers are becoming an increasingly important source of feeder cattle within the U.S. beef supply chain. However, there has been minimal investigation into greenhouse gas emissions [GHG; kg carbon dioxide equivalence (CO2e)] or carbon footprint [kg CO2e/kg hot carcass weight (HCW); C footprint] from beef × dairy crossbred steers in the U.S. Furthermore, how beef × dairy crossbred steers compare with beef steers subjected to different growing systems (calf-fed vs. stocker) is not well explored. The objective of this analysis was to compare the C footprint of beef × dairy

Carbon footprint of waste generated in orthopaedic cases in Pakistan: a pilot descriptive study.

Most of the literature on reducing carbon emissions is from the developed world, which does not represent the realities of the developing world. Therefore, the current study was planned to gauge the carbon footprint generated by total knee and hip arthroplasty at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, between November 2023 and July 2024. The trash was sorted into biohazardous, packaging, and discarded equipment categories. The institutional Carbon Management Tool was used to estimate the carbon footprint. Of the 45 cases, the mean total trash per case was 29.3±13.9kg. In the current practi
