Synthesis of carbon dots-based covalent organic nanomaterial as stationary phase for open tubular capillary electrochromatography.

The transformation of zero-dimensional carbon dots (CDs) to cross-linked nanomaterials is rare. In this work, a novel carbon dots-based covalent organic nanomaterial (CON CDs-TAPB) consisted of 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)-benzene (TAPB) and carbon dots (CDs) through facile Schiff-base reaction was synthesized and then employed as a stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). The CON CDs-TAPB and the CDs-TAPB coated column were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-spectra experiments and X-ray

Research progress on the application and mechanisms of carbon-based zero-dimensional nanomaterials in the preservation of agricultural products: A review.

Postharvest loss of agricultural products is a challenge for global food supply chains. Traditional preservation methods often suffer from chemical residues, environmental pollution, or quality deterioration. Carbon-based zero-dimensional nanomaterials, especially carbon dots (CDs), have emerged as promising alternatives because their nanoscale size, high specific surface area, and abundant functional groups enable microbial membrane interaction, free-radical scavenging, and stimulus-responsive optical signaling. Bibliometric analysis identifies CDs, including carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and gr

Toxicity of carboxylated carbon nanotubes in endothelial cells is attenuated by stimulation of the autophagic flux with the release of nanomaterial in autophagic vesicles.

UNLABELLED: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit a number of unique properties that make them attractive for various nanomedicine applications including their intravascular use. Therefore, the vascular toxicity of CNTs is a critical safety concern and methods of CNTs toxicity modulation are of great interest. Here, we report that carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) induce a decrease in viability of cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) associated with the profound accumulation of autophagosomes. This autophagosome accumulation was mTOR kinase independent and was ca

High surface adsorption properties of carbon-based nanomaterials are responsible for mortality, swimming inhibition, and biochemical responses in Artemia salina larvae.

We investigated the effects of three different carbon-based nanomaterials on brine shrimp (Artemia salina) larvae. The larvae were exposed to different concentrations of carbon black, graphene oxide, and multiwall carbon nanotubes for 48 h, and observed using phase contrast and scanning electron microscopy. Acute (mortality) and behavioural (swimming speed alteration) responses and cholinesterase, glutathione-S-transferase and catalase enzyme activities were evaluated. These nanomaterials were ingested and concentrated in the gut, and attached onto the body surface of the A. salina larvae. Thi

A sustainable approach for efficient ammonium recovery, and simultaneous TOC removal from aqueous solutions by vesicle-like iron phosphate-based carbon nanomaterials.

NH4+ is an ion with versatile potential; however, the release of wastewater containing this component, regardless of its high or low concentration, causes severe eutrophication in aquatic systems and contaminates numerous manufacturing processes. Thus, this study developed a sustainable method that can simultaneously remove, recover NH4+, polish water, oxidize organic matter, and yet release a material that can still be used as fertilizer. Regarding NH4+ removal, FeP400 rapidly exhibited an exceptional NH4+ uptake capacity (343.5 mg g-1) within 8 min, even in dairy processing wastewater with h

Proteomic Profiling of RHD-Related Mitral Annulus Calcification Enabled by Magnetic Carbon Nanomaterial-Supported Quasi-Immobilized Enzyme Digestion.

Elucidating the mechanisms underlying rheumatic heart disease (RHD) accompanied by mitral annulus calcification (MAC) facilitates the identification of sensitive diagnostic biomarkers and the development of targeted therapeutic strategies. Proteomic analysis offers an approach to characterizing protein expression changes, thereby contributing to the clarification of pathogenesis in both RHD and cardiac valve calcification. Time-saving and high-efficiency enzymatic digestion methods are thus highly desirable for reliable and high-performance proteomic analysis. This study developed a quasi-immo

Electrical Wiring of Malarial Parasite Intermediate Hematin on a Tailored N-Doped Carbon Nanomaterial Surface and Its Bioelectrocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Reduction and Sensing.

Hematin, an iron-containing porphyrin compound, plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including oxygen transport, storage, and functionality of the malarial parasite. Specifically, hematin-Fe interacts with the nitrogen atom of antimalarial drugs, forming an intermediate step crucial for their function. The electron transfer functionality of hematin in biological systems has been scarcely investigated. In this study, we developed a biomimicking electrical wiring of hematin-Fe with a model N-drug system, represented as {hematin-Fe---N-drug}. We achieved this by immobilizing hema

Selective Argon Uptake and Structural Ordering in Carbon Honeycomb Nanostructures.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the experimental discovery and structural identification of carbon honeycomb (CH) structures. One of the most prominent properties of CHs is their unique high sorption capacity, which may play an important role in numerous applications, such as Li/Na batteries, hydrogen storage and carbon dioxide capture, as well as in the production of unique composites. In this paper we examine how atoms captured in CHs can be distributed inside CH channels using argon as a neutral probing material. Through a comprehensive structural analysis of the high-energy electr

Ligand-assisted interfacial monomicelle assembly to incorporate intermetallic nanoparticles into mesoporous carbon nanostructures.

Intermetallic nanoparticles (iNPs) exhibit ordered superlattice structures characterized by unique properties, for example, long-range ordering, robust metallic bonding and site-isolation effects. Multicomponent (>2) iNPs are particularly interesting for the development of advanced metallic catalysts for electrochemical applications. Integration of iNPs within mesoporous carbon nanostructures enhances mass and electron transfer during electrolysis and provides a protective mesoporous confinement that prevents iNP sintering and loss during operation. Here we describe a generalized two-step stra

Photoluminescent carbon dots (PCDs) from sour apple: a biocompatible nanomaterial for preventing UHMWPE wear-particle induced osteolysis via modulating Chemerin/ChemR23 and SIRT1 signaling pathway and its bioimaging application.

Photoluminescent nanomaterials have been widely employed in several biological applications both in vitro and in vivo. For the first time, we report a novel application of sour apple-derived photoluminescent carbon dots (PCDs) for reducing ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) wear particle-induced osteolysis using mouse calvarial model. Generally, aseptic prosthetic loosening seems to be a significant postoperative problem for artificial joints replacement, which is mainly contributed by UHMWPE-induced osteolysis. Hence, inhibiting osteoclastic bone-resorption could minimize UHMWP

Graphene nanomaterials and copper co-exposure in Populus nigra L.: ultrastructural, biochemical, and nutritional impact under in vitro conditions.

The wide application of graphene nanomaterials has led to their release into the environment, raising ecological risk concerns, especially when co-existing with other pollutants like copper (Cu), one of the most ubiquitous environmental metals. The impact of co-presence of these nanomaterials and Cu on woody plants remains unstudied and, in this regard, callus culture represents a reliable tool for toxicological studies. In this work, we investigated the effects of Cu in combination with two different graphene nanomaterials, graphene oxide (GO) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP), on the cell ult

Translating silk protein hierarchical structure into graphitic order by FIB-induced pyrolysis.

Silk fibers are protein-based materials with a highly ordered hierarchical architecture extending from β-sheet-rich molecular domains and aligned polypeptide chains to nanofibrillar bundles and microscopic fibers, collectively giving rise to their exceptional mechanical performance. This intrinsic multiscale organization also offers a powerful, yet largely unexplored, platform for templating ordered carbon materials with programmable nanoscale anisotropy. During our nanoscale structural analysis, Bombyx mori (B. mori) silk fibers were unintentionally carbonized while being sectioned into thin

In vitro toxicity evaluation of dextran-functionalized graphene oxide nanoplatelets in human epidermal melanocytes from different skin phototypes.

Dextran-functionalized graphene oxide nanoplatelets (GONP-Dex) have demonstrated potential for use in diagnostic imaging and as MRI contrast agents, however, their toxicology on human exposure needs to be carefully assessed. To date, no study has explored their effects on human melanocytes, which are melanin-producing cells conferring multiple biological benefits in the skin, ears, eyes, hair, oral cavity, and brain. GONP-Dex (6.25-100 μg/mL) was examined for cytotoxicity on melanocytes from lightly pigmented (LP) and darkly pigmented (DP) human skin for a 48-h duration by trypan blue exclusio

Comparative Study of Algae-Based Measurements of the Toxicity of 14 Manufactured Nanomaterials.

With the increasing use of nanomaterials in recent years, determining their comparative toxicities has become a subject of intense research interest. However, the variety of test methods available for each material makes it difficult to compare toxicities. Here, an accurate and reliable method is developed to evaluate the toxicity of manufactured nanomaterials, such as Al2O3, carbon black, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), CeO2, dendrimers, fullerene, gold, iron, nanoclays, silver, SiO2, TiO2, and ZnO.
