A colour-based nomenclature has developed in recent decades to characterise the distribution and distinct functions of organic carbon in natural ecosystems. 'Teal carbon', which is found in shallow inland freshwater wetlands, is the newest type of carbon added to the colour spectrum. Teal carbon ecosystems are more susceptible to anthropogenic activities and climate change than green and blue carbon ecosystems. A detailed global review of major teal carbon ecosystems was performed to highlight the status of teal carbon and its potential role in mitigating global climate change. Our estimates i

In this work, comparative study of paddy and upland soils were carried out to unravel mechanisms of enhanced soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in paddy soils using fractionation methods, 13C NMR and Nano-SIMS analysis, as well as organic layer thickness calculations (Core-Shell model). The results showed that although there is a strong increase in particulate SOC in paddy soils compared to that in the upland soils, the increase in mineral-associated SOC is more important, explaining 60-75% of SOC increase in the paddy soils. In the wet and dry alternate cycles of paddy soil, iron (hydr)o

In this study, high-throughput promoter screening was employed to optimize the heterologous expression of Mesorhizobium loti carbonic anhydrase (MlCA) in order to reduce the costs associated with carbon capture and storage (CCS). To simplify the complexity of traditional vectors, a fusion protein expression system was constructed using superfolder green fluorescent protein (sfGFP) and MlCA. The synthetic promoter library in Escherichia coli was utilized for efficient one-step screening. Based on fluorescence intensity on agar plates, a total of 143 monoclonal colonies were identified, forming

Geological carbon sequestration represents a cornerstone mitigation strategy for stabilizing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and limiting climate impacts from anthropogenic emissions. Its long-term effectiveness depends on geochemical and biological processes within deep subsurface environments, where microbial activity regulates CO2 transformation and stability. Among these processes, calcium carbonate biomineralization and methanogenesis are particularly important because they modify pH, alkalinity, redox conditions, and the availability of divalent cations, thereby promoting

INTRODUCTION: Carbon sequestration and emission reduction in farmland ecosystems are central to sustainable agricultural development. This study evaluated whether organic-inorganic fertilization could coordinate soil carbon accumulation, respiratory carbon losses, crop productivity, and bacterial community structure in a semiarid dryland maize system.
METHODS: Using a long-term fixed-site field experiment established in 2012, we compared five fertilization regimes during 2024 and 2025: no fertilization (NA), chemical fertilizer alone (CF), combined organic and chemical fertilization (SC), org

River systems play crucial roles in the global carbon balance; however, the environmental consequences of sediment dredging on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and carbon sequestration potential remain poorly understood. This study presents the first systematic investigation linking sediment dredging to long-term carbon sequestration dynamics in river ecosystems, addressing critical uncertainties in anthropogenic impacts on aquatic carbon balance. Over a three-year period, dredging significantly altered CO2 flux (fCO2) and dissolved CO2 partial pressure (pCO2), with pronounced seasonal variabili

Dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) can drive the release of organic carbon (OC) as carbon dioxide (CO2 ) by mediating electron transfer between organic compounds and microbes. However, DIR is also crucial for carbon sequestration, which can affect inorganic-carbon redistribution via iron abiotic-phase transformation. The formation conditions of modern carbonate-bearing iron minerals (ICFe ) and their potential as a CO2 sink are still unclear. A natural environment with modern ICFe , such as karst lake sediment, could be a good analog to explore the regulation of microbial iron reduction and se

The carbon sequestration mechanism of the "wheat stubble-green manure" mixed return system in dryland areas of the Loess Plateau remains unclear. We selected local typical Triticum aestivum straw and Glycine ussuriensis straw to simulate the cereal/legume straw co-return model, and established four straw addition treatments with low (6.3 g·kg-1) and high (11.0 g·kg-1) organic carbon content in dark loessial soil: no straw addition control (CK), T. aestivum straw single application (S), G. ussuriensis straw single application (G), and equal mixture of both (SG). Sulfate wastes are produced in large quantities and contain toxic heavy metals such as lead (Pb), posing environmental risks. Because of favorable solubility differences, these wastes can be repurposed for engineered carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration. Understanding the fate and mobility of heavy metals during this process is important. This study focuses on Pb and the effect of zinc (Zn) on Pb in carbon mineralization. Synthesized gypsum was treated with a carbonate-rich solution at pH 11.5 to convert the sulfates to carbonates. Aqueous solutions and mineral solids were analyzed. Synchrotron-

Intensive studies have explored the feasibility of using high CO2 concentrations to culture microalgae for carbon capture. Compared to microalgae, macroalgae are easier to be harvested, thereby reducing culture cost. However, little is known regarding the possibility of using macroalgae to fix and sequester high levels of CO2. In this study, Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis was cultured under low (8 μM) and high (200 μM) nitrate concentrations to clarify the physiological and molecular responses of carbon fixation and sequestration to a 10 % high CO2 concentration (HC). HC, inducing low pH, inhibi

Intercropping is a promising sustainable agriculture practice, but its adoption is hindered by the potential reduction in benefits when shifting from monoculture to intercropping, especially if there are trade-offs between yield, soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. In this study, we synthesized 3843 paired observations from 510 field-based studies that compared the yields, SOC and N2O emissions of intercropping systems (only crop-crop intercropping for grain yield and including crop-tree agroforestry in addition to crop-crop intercropping for SOC and N2O) with monocult

Marine ecosystems act as carbon sinks, particularly through vegetated habitats such as seagrass meadows. In the Mediterranean Sea, the endemic Posidonia oceanica is one of the most important seagrass species for climate change mitigation due to its high capacity to store large amounts of carbon dioxide over long periods of time. To assess and monitor changes in environmental conditions and the economic value of natural resources, this study aims to estimate the effects of climate change on the carbon sequestration capacity of P. oceanica under different detailed climate change scenarios. Coastal wetlands offer large carbon sequestration benefits but their conversion to aquaculture systems could result in substantial carbon losses. Here we show that the conversion of Spartina alterniflora salt marsh to mariculture ponds in China generated a greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint of 20.3 Mg CO2 equivalent per ha per year. Around two-thirds of the footprint can be attributed to foregone salt marsh GHG mitigation capacity, whereas direct carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide emissions in mariculture ponds account for only ~10%, with the remaining ~20% arising from feed, fertilizer and

CO2 chemical fixation technology has a well-established history, yet the absorbed CO2 remains unused and unconverted. To address this limitation, monoethanolamine microalgae collaboration (MMC) was developed for the valorization of CO2. The MMC has exhibited an enhanced capacity for CO2 capture and conversion into valuable organic chemicals, including eicosapentaenoic acid.

The atomic structure and stability of the surfaces of orthoenstatite (Mg2Si2O6), a silicate often present in natural environments where carbon dioxide is captured and stored into minerals or reduced, have been investigated for the first time using density functional theory and a classical rigid-ion force field model. Only non-polar stoichiometric surfaces have been considered, with a specific focus on the {210}, {010}, {100}, {110} and {120} surfaces that have been most frequently reported in the literature. It turns out that there are only three main surfaces ({210}, {010}, {100}), all the ot

Climate modeling suggests that achieving international climate goals requires a reduction in current CO2 emissions by over 90%, with any remaining emissions to be addressed through carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions. Sixteen CDR strategies are evaluated by integrating technical potential, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria, along with sequestration permanence. This evaluation, conducted by ENGIE's scientific council using an interdisciplinary Delphi panel methodology, proposes a "quality" measure for each technology. This measure combines ESG scores and sequestration time

Carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides are the main components of fossil flue gas causing the most serious environmental problems. Developing a sustainable and green method to treat carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides of flue gas is still challenging. Here, a co-cultured microalgae/bacteria system, Chlorella vulgaris and Pseudomonas sp., was developed for simultaneous sequestration of CO2 and removal of nitrogen oxides from flue gas, as well as producing valuable microalgae biomass. The co-cultured Chlorella vulgaris and Pseudomonas sp. showed the highest CO2 fixation and NO3--N removal rate of 0.4

Global warming caused by the emission of CO2 in industrial flue gas has attracted more and more attention. Therefore, to fix CO2 with high efficiency and environmentally friendly had become the hot research field. Compared with the traditional coal-fired power plant flue gas emission reduction technology, carbon fixation and emission reduction by microalgae is considered as a promising technology due to the advantages of simple process equipment, convenient operation and environmental protection. When the flue gas is treated by microalgae carbon fixation and emission reduction technology, micr

Forests are vital for maintaining the global carbon balance and mitigating climate change by sequestering CO2 and storing organic carbon, contributing to sustainable development. However, Ethiopia lacks national-level carbon inventories, monitoring systems, and databanks to enhance carbon sequestration. This study assessed the carbon stock potential along altitudinal, slope, and aspect gradients in the Sulula Mofa Dry Afro-Montane Forest. Using stratified random sampling, 42 plots (400 m² each) were established. A total of 210 subplots (1 m × 1 m; 1 m²) were established within the main plots f

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a promising carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategy, yet current estimates commonly assume that cation release directly reflects CO2 sequestration. We investigated wollastonite weathering and carbon sequestration in agricultural soils spanning a wide pH range using column experiments. Weathering decreased with increasing soil pH, with 63%, 48%, and 30% of wollastonite dissolved at pH 4, 6, and 8, respectively. However, CDR estimated from cation release exceeded measured inorganic carbon formation by 1.5-3.1 times, with the largest discrepancy in acidic soil. Cha
