Carcinoid heart disease (CaHD) is part of the carcinoid syndrome. Cardiac involvement is present in 20% to 60% of patients with carcinoid syndrome and is normally from liver metastasis. We report the case of a patient who presented with CaHD disease with an undiagnosed primary tumor or a possible primary liver carcinoid tumor. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.).

Primary carcinoid tumors of the testis are very rare, and they seldom present with carcinoid syndrome. We report a hereto unreported instance, where a patient with a long-standing testicular mass presented with carcinoid heart disease, an uncommon form of carcinoid syndrome. He presented with symptoms of right heart failure, episodic facial flushing and was found to have severe right-sided valvular heart disease. His urinary 5-hydroxy indole acetic acid level was elevated. He underwent orchidectomy and the histopathology confirmed a testicular carcinoid tumor.

Appendiceial carcinoid tumors (CAT) and goblet cell carcinoids (GCCAT) are rare. Most are asymptomatic and found after appendectomy. Metastases to regional nodes are seen in 10% of CATs larger than two cm. Ovarian or peritoneal metastases are seen in 20% of all GCCATs. Further surgical treatments are shown in Tables. Non-resectable CAT are treated with interferon-alpha, somatostatin analogs or radionuclides. Non-resectable GCCATs are treated like colo-rectal cancer. Patients with CAT larger than two cm, involvement of mesoappendix or metastases and all GCCAT should be followed life-long.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoid syndrome occurs in about 10% of patients with carcinoid tumors.
OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the present study was to determine the presence of the carcinoid syndrome in the group of patients with the carcinoid tumor.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 43 pts. (22 w/21 m) with carcinoid tumors (M group--26 pts. with metastatic disease, B group--17 pts. after resection of the primary tumor without known metastases at the time of the investigation) were included in the study. We estimated the presence of the carcinoid syndrome in all patients. The urinary excretion of 5-HIAA was

The carcinoid syndrome, associated with carcinoid tumors of the midgut, consists of symptoms such as diarrhea, flushing, wheezing and cardiovascular symptoms. This review focuses on these symptoms and discusses therapeutic options. The symptoms are caused by the secretion of biogenic amines, polypeptides and other factors of which serotonin is the most prominent. However, diarrhea is also due to factors such as malabsorption. Besides antitumor therapy, more specific interventions such as serotonin receptor blockers can be useful. The carcinoid heart disease involves the tricuspid and pulmonary

Certainly in treatment of the carcinoid tumor surgery has a well-established curative and palliative potential. The primary challenge is a knowledgable marriage between stage of disease and aggressiveness of operative procedure. Nonsurgical treatment of the malignant disease per se has thus far not produced optimum results and, in the opinion of this author, should still be confined to a clinical research setting. It would seem very doubtful, however, that the more mundane types of trials, empirically testing drug after drug and arbitrarily concocted drug combinations, is the most productive r

We here report the case of a 32-year old female patient with a 5-year history of recurrent purulent bronchial syndrome. Radiological assessment showed a left basithoracic finely ringed bright areas related to cylindrical bronchiectasis located in the left lower lobe. Flexible bronchoscopy showed smooth surface, reddish tumor obstructing the entrance of the left basal pyramid. The patient underwent left lower lobectomy associated with mediastinal lymph node dissection. Histological examination of the surgical specimen was in favor of typical carcinoid tumor. Postoperative outcome was uncomplica

Bronchial carcinoid tumor comprises 1 to 3% of lung neoplasms. The common age of onset is mainly post-puberty although atypical carcinoid tumors occur at ages 44 to 55. Carcinoid tumors cause two groups of symptoms in patients: symptoms due to obstruction and symptoms due to the production and release of active neuropeptides. Histologically, carcinoid tumors are categorized into two groups of typical and atypical while in terms of location of lesion, they are grouped into central and peripheral types. Differentiation between malignant and benign carcinoid tumors is based on presence or absence

Pulmonary sequestration is defined as a mass of lung tissue separated from the tracheobronchial tree and irrigated by an anomalous systemic artery. It is rarely seen in conjunction with lung neoplasms. We report the case of a 39-year-old female patient diagnosed with a carcinoid tumor, located in the intermediate bronchus and accompanied by bronchiectasis in the right lower lobe. The patient underwent thoracotomy for the resection of the affected area. During surgery, she presented with significant hemorrhage resulting from the transection of the anomalous artery that irrigated an intralobar p

A 69-year-old man presented with a 2.4 cm painless mass in his right testis. Inguinal orchiectomy was performed. Histologically a carcinoid tumor of the testis was diagnosed. These neuroendocrine, noninvasive tumors are very rare, representing 0.23% of all testicular neoplasms. In 10% these tumors are associated with carcinoid syndrome and in 20% with metastatic disease.

OBJECTIVE: Carcinoid tumors are among the exceptional neoplasms of the larynx. The literature is reviewed and the problems with diagnosis and management of this rare tumor are discussed.
METHODS: The authors report a case of a carcinoid tumor of the larynx.
RESULTS: This paper describes the case of a well-differentiated carcinoid tumor of the aryepiglottic fold in a 59-year-old woman who presented with hoarseness lasting eight months. After surgical excision, the patient developed recurrence of the disease 14 years later.
CONCLUSION: Carcinoid tumors require accurate diagnosis because of th

We report a 38-year-old lady with carcinoid tumor of the extrahepatic biliary tract who presented with recurrent obstructive jaundice and previous surgery for suspected choledocholithiasis. MRCP revealed a large bile duct tumor extending from the confluence up to the superior aspect of the pancreas; this was completely excised, with bilio-enteric anastomosis. These tumors are characteristically slow growing and, therefore, are amenable to aggressive surgical excision, which offers the best chance of cure.

An 80-year-old male patient presented with a 4-month history of nine extremely painful cutaneous nodules located on his forehead, neck, thorax, arms, and thighs. Biopsies of two nodules were performed. Routine histology, immunohistochemistry for chromogranin, as well as electron microscopy demonstrated that the nodules corresponded to cutaneous metastases of a carcinoid tumor, probably originated in the gastric antrum. The present description is, to the best of our knowledge, the first one to correlate the spontaneous and pressure-induced pain in the nodules with perineural invasion and neural

Carcinoid tumor arising in a Meckel's diverticulum is a rare lesion with only 52 cases described in the literature. Most of these tumors are found incidentally at autopsy or during an operation performed for an unrelated reason. The lesion can, however, in about one-third of cases, be the cause of symptoms necessitating surgical intervention; the diagnosis is nearly never apparent till the specimen has been removed. When the signs do not match the symptoms, consideration of uncommon conditions such as this may help in making a correct preoperative diagnosis. Resection of the intestinal segment

Carcinoid tumor of the testis is rare and its histogenesis is controversial. We report a case of carcinoid tumor in an undescended testis with electron microscopic evidence of neurosecretory granules.
