A Rare Case and Atypical Metastatic Regions, Pulmonary Giant Cell Carcinoma.

Sixty two years old man referred to our clinic due to suspicion of thymic mass. The hypermetabolic nodular lesion in the right lung upper lobe was seen in 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in addition to the mass in the anterior mediastinum which was found to without malignancy. The patient underwent wedge resection and final diagnosis was pulmonary giant cell carcinoma. In follow-up 18F-FDG PET/CT multiple lesions with pathological activity were observed in the cerebrum, right postauricular region, bilateral adrenal, stomach, pancreas, pelv

[A case of sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma associated with giant hydronephrosis].

A 55-year-old man with a huge cystic lesion in the left kidney was referred to our department. Preoperative computed tomographic scan with enhancement by contrast agents showed that the cyst wall had solid components. Left radical nephrectomy was performed. The resected kidney with giant hydronephrosis weighed 3,950 g and had a ureteral stone with a long diameter of 27 mm. The tumor had infiltrated the renal pelvis, and it was unclear whether the tumor had originated from the kidney or pelvis. Pathological findings showed that the tumor was sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma. He was started on I

Giant cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx: pathologic diagnosis and natural history.

A 48-year-old man was initially seen with a giant cell carcinoma arising in the right piriform fossa. Following debulking, the tumour was treated with chemoradiation. The patient subsequently underwent laryngopharyngectomy. Distant metastases developed 10 months following treatment, despite the absence of locoregional recurrence. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of giant cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx and first giant cell carcinoma of the laryngopharynx treated with chemoradiation. Based on our experience, surgery should remain the primary intervention to achieve locoregion

Invasive squamous-cell carcinoma in giant anorectal condyloma (Buschke-Löwenstein tumor).

Giant condyloma acuminata, first described by Buschke and Löwenstein in 1925 as a penile lesion, is extremely rare in the anorectal region. The cauliflower-like tumor behaves clinically in a malignant fashion, although it shows no histomorphological criteria of malignancy. Up to the time of writing only 33 cases of anorectal origin, 42% with malignant transformation, have been published. The authors report 2 more cases of squamous-cell carcinoma in giant anorectal condylomata acuminata. Buschke-Löwenstein tumor is an intermediate entity between "ordinary" condyloma acuminata and squamous-cell

Adenosquamous Cell Carcinoma Associated With Giant Lung Cyst: A Case Report.

Emphysematous lung cysts are considered to be a risk factor for the development of lung cancer, and there have been several reports of lung cancer cases that have developed in conjunction with large lung cysts. Emphysematous lung cysts are more common in heavy smokers, and it has been pointed out that early detection is difficult because the lung mass shadow overlaps with the lung cyst, so they are often detected in an advanced state. We report a case of this disease that was discovered incidentally. The patient was a 51-year-old man. During a health checkup, he was found to have a right lung

Giant Basal Cell Carcinoma Within a Marjolin's Ulcer: A Case Discussion.

Marjolin's ulcers are cutaneous malignancies that arise from chronic wounds, often secondary to burns. While squamous cell carcinoma is the most prevalent type, rare instances of other tumors, such as basal cell carcinoma, have occurred. These tumors are challenging to treat due to their high recurrence rate and aggressive behavior. In this report, we present the case of a 76-year-old male with a history significant for polysubstance use, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C, and Agent Orange exposure who presented with a large fungating basal cell carcinoma secondary to a non-heali

Giant Basal Cell Carcinoma: A 12-Year Follow-up Case Report.

Giant basal cell carcinomas (GBCCs) are a strange and aggressive variety of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs); they are characterized by deep tissue invasion, rapid growth, high risk of metastasis, and a poor prognosis. GBCCs represent 0.4%-1% of all BCCs. The pathogenesis of GBCC is sometimes linked to a spontaneous mutation in the PTCH gene, mapped to the q22.33 locus of chromosome 9. The key factor in the development of GBCC, in at least 30% of the cases, is the delay in seeking medical attention (7.5 ± 3.1 years). This is associated to a poor socioeconomic level, deficient hygiene, mental illne

Giant basal cell carcinoma of the forehead with extensive intracranial involvement.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant skin lesion and is frequently curatively treated with local excision. Improper removal or neglect of BCC is a particular problem for head and neck surgeons. We describe a case of a recurrent BCC that aggressively grew from the forehead skin through the skull and into the frontal lobe. We also present a review of the literature. Despite its fairly benign growth pattern, BCC should never be underestimated, and care should be taken not only in the complete primary excision but also in cancer surveillance.

Undifferentiated spindle and giant cell carcinoma of the common bile duct.

Undifferentiated spindle and giant cell carcinoma of the common bile duct has not been reported previously. We present here a case of 71-year-old man with the undifferentiated spindle and giant cell carcinoma of the common bile duct, including immunohistochemical findings. A nodular infiltrating tumor was located at the lower portion of the extrahepatic bile duct, and measured 1.2 x 0.6 cm in size. Histologically, the tumor was composed of proliferated sarcomatoid spindle tumor cells. Numerous multinucleated giant cells were intermingled with the sarcomatoid spindle tumor cells. Immunohistoche

Giant cell temporal arteritis associated with overlying basal cell carcinoma: co-incidence or connection?

Giant cell arteritis is a granulomatous vasculitis of large and medium sized arteries manifesting as temporal arteritis and/or polymyalgia rheumatica. The histological assessment of temporal artery biopsies is frequently encountered in anatomical pathology and has important diagnostic consequences in patients clinically suspected of having giant cell arteritis. We present an intriguing case of giant cell arteritis associated with a Basal cell carcinoma and discuss the ongoing controversy pertaining to the association of giant cell arteritis/polymyalgia rheumatica with malignancy.

Jejunal intussusception caused by metastasis of a giant cell carcinoma of the lung.

A 55-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital reporting of nausea, vomiting and anorexia. One month before admission, she had been diagnosed with lung cancer with intestinal metastasis. A CT scan confirmed intussusception due to intestinal metastasis and she underwent emergency laparoscopic surgery followed by resection of the primary lung cancer. Histopathological findings of the intestinal specimen suggested the metastasis was from a giant cell carcinoma of the lung, which had extensive necrosis. She was still alive without recurrence 11 months after the first surgery. Giant cell carcinom

Immunohistochemical evaluation of a sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma with osteoclastlike giant cells.

BACKGROUND: Malignant liver tumors with osteoclast-like giant cells are rare. A literature search showed 17 previously reported cases that included the following: (1) 8 undifferentiated hepatocellular carcinomas, (2) 5 sarcomatous tumors with osteoclast-like giant cells associated with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma or liver cystadenocarcinoma, and (3) 4 sarcomatoid tumors with osteoclast-like giant cells associated with areas of a conventional hepatocellular carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man presented with a tumor of the right lobe of the liver on ultrasonography and computed

Photodynamic therapy for the treatment of a giant superficial basal cell carcinoma.

A 74-year-old man was referred to our department for the treatment of a 15 x 15 cm superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on his lumbar region. As surgical excision was considered too destructive, photodynamic therapy (PDT) was proposed. Methyl 5-aminolevulinate (MAL) cream was applied under occlusion for 3 h before illumination with a light-emitting diode lamp with an emission peak of 632 nm, a fluence rate of 83.3 mW/cm, and a light dose of 37 J/cm. A second MAL-PDT session was repeated 1 week later. The neoplastic area healed in 30 days. No recurrence has occurred after a 40-month follow-up

The shape-shifter: A case of pleomorphic giant cell carcinoma of prostate.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, with bone metastases in advanced cases, commonly involving the spine. Pleomorphic giant cell carcinoma (PGCC) is a rare and aggressive variant of prostate cancer. We present a 71-year-old male with a history of prostate adenocarcinoma, treated with prostatectomy, radiotherapy and androgen blockade, who developed progressive lower back pain and bilateral leg weakness. Imaging showed spinal metastases at L5-S1 and D6-D7, with spinal cord compression. Biopsy revealed a metastatic high-grade, poorly differentiated tumor, consistent with PGCC

A Giant Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in a Patient with Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of follicular pilosebaceous units. Chronic, active, and poorly controlled disease may lead to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The diagnosis and treatment of SCC in HS is particularly challenging because SCC lesions may be easily mistaken for HS lesions. Current medical literature recommends aggressive surgical excision with at least 2-cm margins. In this article, the authors describe a giant perianal SCC arising in a patient with HS who was treated with surgical resection and radiotherapy.
