Cytologic features of fine-needle aspirations (FNAs) of the breast from three patients with either lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) or atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH) are described and compared with those in six patients with infiltrating lobular carcinoma (ILC). FNAs of LCIS and ALH were characterized by loosely cohesive cell groups composed of uniform cells with frequent eccentric nuclei, minimal nuclear atypia, and occasional intracytoplasmic lumina. FNAs from ILC had some overlapping features with ALH and LCIS but were generally more cellular and had a higher proportion of noncohesive s

A 51-year-old woman had a 35 mm circumscribed calcified lesion identified on screening mammography, designated R4. Excision showed a fibroadenoma with multiple foci of lobular neoplasia (atypical lobular hyperplasia and classical lobular carcinoma in situ [LCIS]). A focus of microinvasive lobular carcinoma (MILC) was also present, confirmed on immunohistochemistry. The MILC cells were ER positive, Her-2-negative, and e-cadherin negative. Microinvasive carcinoma, defined as "invasive carcinoma with no focus measuring >1 mm" (TNM UICC 7th edition) is usually encountered in ductal carcinoma in si

Invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast is the second most common type of primary breast cancer, accounting for 8-14% of cases, but is often difficult to diagnose early. It typically shows a diffuse pattern of infiltration within the breast, resulting in a variety of often subtle radiological appearances. A similar infiltrative pattern is seen in its metastatic form, with involvement of the gastrointestinal tract, peritoneum, retroperitoneum, bone marrow, meninges and uterus occurring more frequently than with the more common infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast. Metastatic tumors in the small intestine are rare. The most commonly implicated primitive tumors are malignant melanoma, lung cancer and colon cancer. Few cases of metastasis to the intestine as the first manifestation of metastasis have been described. We present a case of metastasis to the intestine of lobular breast carcinoma 9 years after surgical resection of the primary tumor. Metastasis presented as anasarca. Ray small bowel series revealed ileal stenosis. Diagnosis was confirmed by histopathologic analysis following surgical resection of the affected intestinal segment.

The initial presentation of breast malignancy as noninvasive carcinoma in an area of sclerosing adenosis is unusual. Especially, lobular carcinoma in situ in sclerosing adenosis sometimes can be a potential source of confusion with invasive lobular carcinoma. We report a case of lobular carcinoma in situ presenting in adenosis exhibiting patterns akin to invasive lobular carcinoma, thus leading to potential misdiagnosis. Overall architecture of the lesion as seen at lower power and immunohistochemistry can be useful to distinguish between sclerosing adenosis with lobular carcinoma in situ and

BACKGROUND: We thought that observation for patients with lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) had been generally accepted by the mid-1980s. A questionnaire mailed to oncologic surgeons in 1988 revealed that 33% of the respondents still advised unilateral mastectomy, although a slim majority (54%) advised observation. New studies have been published in the intervening 8 years, and we decided it would be worth recirculating the 1988 questionnaire.
METHODS: The identical questionnaire was mailed to members of the same oncologic societies (Society of Surgical Oncology [SSO] and Society for the Study

The entity of lobular carcinoma in situ within a fibroadenoma is being increasingly recognized. Clinical examination, mammography, and fine-needle aspiration are the cornerstones in managing breast masses. A patient is presented with three lumps in the left breast. Although the workup was completely negative, pathological examination revealed lobular carcinoma in situ within one of the fibroadenomas.

Lobular carcinoma in situ is a relatively "new" breast lesion, having been described only 50 years ago. It was originally thought to be a stage in the progression to invasive lobular cancer, but current evidence suggests that it is a marker of increased risk. It is certainly the most powerful of all risk factors, with studies suggesting that approximately 20 to 30 per cent of patients will go on to develop invasive cancer of various histologic types and with equal frequency in the biopsied and the opposite breast. There is general agreement concerning these facts, but considerable controversy

Lobular carcinoma may arise within the epithelial component of fibroadenoma of the breast, as evidenced by 5 cases reported from the files of the Mayo Clinic and 21 cases cited in the literature. The 5 cases reported here occurred in a series of 4000 cases of fibroadenoma during a 43-year period. Lobular carcinoma is the more frequent type to be seen in fibroadenoma (in 22 of 26 cases); it usually develops in situ. Extra-adenomatous carcinoma of the ipsilateral breast was identified in 11 of 26 cases, and 3 cases of contralateral carcinoma were noted in the entire series. Thus, lobular carcino

Mixed ductal-lobular carcinomas (MDLs) show both ductal and lobular morphology, and constitute an archetypal example of intratumoural morphological heterogeneity. The mechanisms underlying the coexistence of these different morphological entities are poorly understood, although theories include that these components either represent 'collision' of independent tumours or evolve from a common ancestor. We performed comprehensive clinicopathological analysis of a cohort of 82 MDLs, and found that: (1) MDLs more frequently coexist with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) than with lobular carcinoma in

Tumor development from an early lesion through to invasive disease is not a clearly defined progression in the breast. Studies of invasive lobular carcinoma have reported mutations, loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and loss of protein expression in epithelial (E)-cadherin, a protein involved in cell adhesion. Our study examines in situ lobular neoplastic lesions without concurrent invasive carcinoma for E-cadherin gene alterations and protein expression, beta-catenin, alpha-catenin and p120-catenin protein expression, and LOH at the chromosome 16q locus, with the goal of determining the events occ

OBJECTIVE: The association of tubular carcinoma, columnar cell lesions and lobular carcinoma in situ, also known as the "Rosen Triad", may be encountered in breast biopsies performed for evaluation of mammographically detected microcalcifications.
CASE REPORT: A case in which tubular carcinoma and columnar cell hyperplasia were associated with a histologically unusual form of signet ring lobular carcinoma in situ is presented. Signet ring non-invasive lobular carcinoma is classified as high-grade lobular carcinoma in situ, but herein is associated with changes that belong to the molecular pat

Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the second-most common histologic subtype of breast cancer, constituting 5% to 15% of all breast cancers. It is characterized by an infiltrating growth pattern that may decrease detectability on mammography and US. The use of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) improves conspicuity of ILC, and sensitivity is 80% to 88% for ILC. Sensitivity of mammography is lower in dense breasts, and breast tomosynthesis has better sensitivity for ILC in dense breasts compared with digital mammography (DM). Screening US identifies additional ILCs even after DBT, with a suppl

Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is considered to be a risk factor for the development of invasive breast carcinoma, but it may also be a non-obligate precursor to invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). Many LCIS lesions do not progress to ILC, and the molecular changes that are necessary for progression from LCIS to ILC are poorly understood. Disruption in the E-cadherin complex is the hallmark of lobular lesions, but other signaling molecules, such as PIK3CA and c-src, are consistently altered in LCIS. This review focuses on the molecular drivers of lobular carcinoma, a more complete understandin

We reviewed the courses of 250 consecutive women with lobular carcinoma in situ of the breast entered into the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program of the Michigan Cancer Foundation, Detroit, Mich, between 1973 and 1986. No patient had known invasive cancer at the time of initial entry. The average follow-up was 93.1 months; 212 patients had mastectomy for the initial lesion and 65 patients had less than mastectomy, of whom one developed a new lesion in the ipsilateral breast. Thirty-seven patients (14.8%) were later found to have lesions in the contralateral breast, 25 within t
