Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare but highly aggressive cutaneous tumour. Most tumours occur in the head and neck, extremities or torso and 36% of them involve the face. Bone marrow involvement in MCC is rare and to our knowledge only nine cases reported in the English literature. Bone marrow biopsy is not usually performed to stage MCC; thus, the true incidence of bone marrow involvement may be under-reported. The majority of the cases reported in the literature have some form of immunosuppression, which suggests a strong association. We report a case of extensive bone marrow involvement

Merkel cell carcinoma of the eyelid is a rare tumor with less than 100 reported cases worldwide. We describe an unusual presentation of Merkel cell carcinoma of the eyelid in a 60 year old Asian male. He presented with multiple left lower lid conjunctival nodules, intense conjunctival erythema, as well as ipsilateral cervical lymphadenopathy. An incisional biopsy diagnosed him with Merkel cell carcinoma with a PET scan showing distant metastatic disease. He was then treated with chemotherapy. The combination of a presentation of conjunctival nodules and erythema, location in the lower eyelid a

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare but often deadly cutaneous malignancy. It carries a 40 percent five-year mortality rate, in contrast to 15 percent for malignant melanoma, and the incidence is increasing among older and immunosuppressed patients. Dermatologists need to be aware of the particular diagnostic and treatment challenges as the incidence increases. New data is helping to identify patients most at risk, accurately stage the tumor and to optimize treatment regimens. With the recent discovery of a virus as part of the etiology of this tumor, approaches to use the body's immune system to

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare neuroendocrine malignancy, primarily affecting sun-exposed skin. The mean age at presentation is 75 years. To our knowledge there have been only four patients with spinal metastasis reported previously, with one patient alone having a marked neurological deficit requiring surgical decompression. We report a 73-year-old male who presented with rapidly progressive paraplegia 6 months following excision of a primary cutaneous Merkel cell lesion. He had a metastatic deposit at T6 comprising a canal filling epidural component with local aggressive bone destruction. H

A man in his 70s presented to a dermatology outpatient clinic with a new rash developing over 4 weeks, associated with weakness and swallowing difficulties. He had a background of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) diagnosed 2 years prior, with a recent CT suspicious for pancreatic metastasis. On examination, there were urticated plaques involving the face, neck, back and abdomen. Gottron sign and papules, Holster sign and periorbital erythema were also present. There was proximal muscle weakness and dysphagia, requiring urgent inpatient assessment and a multidisciplinary care approach. An autoantibo

Merkel cell carcinoma is an aggressive skin malignancy. Primary Merkel cell carcinomas are treated by wide radical excision with or without adjuvant radiotherapy, while benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy remain doubtful. There are only several cases of gastrointestinal metastases of Merkel cell carcinoma reported so far. We report a case of recurrent Merkel cell carcinoma with metastases to the stomach and the small intestines after wide excision of primary Merkel cell carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive cutaneous malignancy of the elderly and immunocompromised patients. It is occasionally found coexisting with other diseases, such as squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis, miscellaneous adnexal tumors, and rarely Bowen disease. A 75-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of an irregularly shaped erythematous patch on the left mandibular angle. Three months later, a 1.5×1.0 cm sized painless and rapidly growing erythematous nodule developed on the patch. Microscopically, the patch lesion was consistent with th

Merkel cell carcinomas are rare cutaneous neoplasms that are known to metastasize to various mucosal sites, including the genitourinary tract. Primary Merkel cell carcinomas of the genitourinary tract are extremely rare and may be mistaken for other more common carcinomas of the genitourinary tract, including urothelial carcinomas and prostatic carcinomas. However, primary Merkel cell carcinoma of the genitourinary tract is a very aggressive tumor with poor prognosis. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate clinical treatment. The discovery of the Merkel cell polyomavirus as a possible c

CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman presented with a large rapidly growing violaceous mass initially diagnosed as a chalazion. Histopathologic examination disclosed Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). Radiotherapy was not tolerated. Despite chemotherapy, she succumbed to widespread metastases 13 months later.
COMMENTS: MCC must be included in the differential diagnosis of solitary eyelid nodules, requiring early and aggressive treatment.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin for which causative factors remain largely unknown. The site-specific risks of multiple primary cancers associated with MCC, which may provide insight into etiologic influences, have not been quantified in large population-based studies. We estimated the long-term risk of subsequent primary tumors after a first primary MCC (1,306 patients) and the risk of second primary MCC following other first primary cancers (2,048,739 patients) within 11 population-based cancer registries which report to the National Cancer Insti

BACKGROUND: There are a few cases of "small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma" of the Bartholin's gland as well as Merkel cell carcinoma of the vulva reported in the gynecologic oncology literature, most with aggressive clinical behavior. Merkel cells were originally described in the epidermis with neuroendocrine properties. Merkel cell carcinoma is different from the neuroendocrine small cell (oat cell) tumor arising in the lung and other internal organs based on morphology and immunohistochemistry.
CASE: A 49-year-old female was diagnosed with a FIGO stage I Merkel cell carcinoma of the Barthol

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an infrequent, highly malignant, primary skin tumor derived from neuroendocrine cells. Most MCCs occur in elderly individuals, on sun-exposed areas of the body, with the head and neck being the most common sites. We present 7 patients (2 male and 5 female, age 45-80 years) suffering from MCC and treated between 1993 and 2000. All tumors were located on the head and neck and varied from 0.9 to 2.3 cm in size. Five of the patients had stage II disease, 1 patient had stage Ia disease and 1 patient had stage III disease. Six of the patients had positive regional lymp

Merkel cell carcinoma is a primary cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma occurring commonly in the head and neck of middle-aged and elderly patients. While not very rare, this disease has never been reported in Taiwan. We report the clinical and pathologic features of three patients with Merkel cell carcinoma. The patients included one male (aged 56) and two females (aged 70, 80). The primary sites of the tumors were the hand in one patient and the head and neck in two. Two patients had regional lymph node metastasis. Case 1 had concurrent chronic arsenicalism with multiple Bowen's disease and sq

Merkel cell carcinoma is an infrequent but highly aggressive cutaneous neoplasm. Previous reports of ocular involvement have included primary eyelid carcinomas, eyelid and orbital metastases, and a clinically diagnosed choroidal metastasis. The authors report the histopathologic documentation of a metastatic lesion to the ciliary body, confirming the intraocular metastatic potential of this tumor.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is known as a rare and highly malignant neuroendocrine skin cancer and often occurs in the sun-exposed parts of the elderly individuals. In this article, we reported 2 cases of MCC and reviewed relative literature. Case 1 was a 91-year-old woman who presented with a half-year history of a brown nodule on the left temple. The histopathological and immunohistochemistry examination diagnosis was MCC with negative staining of Merkel cell polyomavirus large T antigen (CM2B4). Case 2 was a 76-year-old man with a nodule on his right buttock that gradually increased from ap

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive tumor of both epithelial and neuroendocrine origin, which carries a mortality rate of up to 40%. MCC tumors typically present as painless, expanding nodules on the sun-exposed skin areas of older, white patients. Eyelid and periocular tumors comprise approximately 2.5% of all cases of MCC and may be mistaken for chalazia or basal cell carcinomas. Immunosuppression is a significant risk factor, particularly in solid-organ-transplant recipients, patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and patients with HIV. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is often
