INTRODUCTION: Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the salivary gland is a rare subtype of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The most common site of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the salivary glands is the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular gland, and the minor salivary glands.
OBSERVATION: Here we report the first case of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the sublingual gland.
DISCUSSION: Clinicians should consider sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the differential diagnosis of salivary gland neoplasm. Surgical excision with clear margins seems to be a sufficient init

INTRODUCTION: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma represents one of the most common malignant salivary gland tumors. However, the sclerosing morphologic variant is extremely rare with only 23 reported cases in the English-language literature since it was discovered in 1987.
CASE REPORT: Herein, we describe another case that was diagnosed in a 25-year-old woman presenting with a posterior auricular mass, as well as a review of the literature, which demonstrates that this is an extremely rare malignancy with no strict protocol for treatment.
CONCLUSION: Pathologists must be aware of recognizing low grade

A 36-year-old lady presented with redness and decreased vision in right eye since 6 months. She was earlier diagnosed of cavitary lung lesion, presumed secondary to tuberculosis and treated with anti-tubercular treatment for 4 months. Examination of affected right eye revealed nil light perception, conjunctival congestion with an exuberant mass in the inferotemporal bulbar conjunctiva, proptosis, iris neovascularization, 360° closed angles, intraocular pressure of 48 mm Hg, exudative retinal detachment, uveal mass and orbital extension. A diagnostic needle biopsy of uveal mass revealed maligna

Conjunctival mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a very rare but highly aggressive conjunctival neoplasm with 42 previously reported cases. We report the case of a 56-year-old male with a left ocular surface squamous neoplasm, which was subsequently treated with excision and autoconjunctival graft. Histopathology of the operative specimen reported a low-grade conjunctival mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and the patient was then treated with an adjunctive course of mitomycin C. On review 10 months after lesion excision, there was no recurrence, and the patient was otherwise well. Due to its rare incidence, d

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lung (MEC) is a tumor of low malignant potential of bronchial gland origin. MEC and adenoid cystic carcinoma are both considered to be salivary gland-type neoplasms. MECs are comparatively rare with an incidence of all lung cancers. We recently encountered a case of this type of lung cancer. A 60-year-old man was found to have an abnormal shadow in the left lower lung field on a regular check-up for lung cancer at his company. Chest radiography and CT revealed a mass shadow measuring 30 mm in diameter in the left lower lung field. Bronchoscopy revealed a protube

A 44 year old female presented with an intraoral soft tissue swelling in the retromolar region, which was painless, mobile and fluctuant in nature. Computed tomography as well as preoperative ultrasound revealed thick walled cystic lesion. The lesion was clinically diagnosed as mucocele. Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration was done, which revealed turbid, straw colour fluid. This cystic swelling was completely excised and histopathologically identified to be low grade Mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This unusual presentation of Mucoepidermoid carcinoma as an intraoral cyst is one of the rare an

In cases of recent asthma in which clinical control with the usual treatment (corticosteroids and bronchodilator) is unsatisfactory, it is important to consider other diagnoses, such as congestive heart failure, gastroesophageal reflux or other forms of airway obstruction. We report the case of a female patient with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the trachea mimicking asthma. The patient presented cough and wheezing, as well as abnormal spirometry results with an obstructive pattern that was responsive to bronchodilators. One year later, the patient presented clinical and spirometric worsening. T

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronan (HA) is a prominent extracellular matrix component undergoing continuous production and degradation. Increased HA levels have been described in a variety of tumors. The objective of this study was to examine the staining patterns of HA and two of its associated receptors (CD44 and HARE) in relation to the metastatic potential of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MC). Immunohistochemical staining of preserved surgical specimens was used.
METHODS: Tissues from 12 patients with a histologic diagnosis of salivary MC (10 parotid, one submandibular gland, one minor salivary gland) we

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the larynx is an uncommon malignancy. It is mostly located in the supraglottis. It frequently occurs in middle-aged and elderly men. The treatment is primarily surgical. A 42-year-old man presented with a complaint of hoarseness of six-month history. Examination revealed a swelling involving the right arytenoid, false cord, and vocal cords. The right vocal cord was fixed. A biopsy obtained from the lesion showed a low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. He underwent total laryngectomy and right functional neck dissection.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old man presented with a multilobulated left parotid mass measuring 5.2 × 4.1 × 2.4 cm by imaging, and numerous enlarged left cervical lymph nodes, suspicious for metastasis. FNA cytopathology of the mass showed loose clusters of large cells displaying increased N/C ratios and ample granular oncocytic cytoplasm. A superficial left parotidectomy with radical resection of the cheek and cervical lymphadenectomy was performed. Histopathologic examination disclosed a circumscribed, unencapsulated neoplasm exhibiting a solid growth pattern composed of infiltrative island

PURPOSE: In this study, we evaluated the clinicopathologic and molecular characteristics of lacrimal apparatus mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) to define its typical diagnostic features.
DESIGN: Retrospective observational case series.
METHODS: Institutional pathology records between 2011 and 2021 were searched for all cases of lacrimal apparatus MEC.
RESULTS: A total of 2 male and 6 female patients ranging in age from 18 to 83 years (median 56, mean 54) were included. Six lacrimal apparatus MECs were found in the lacrimal gland, and 2 cases occurred in the lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct.

A 58-year-old male presented with redness for 1 year and dimness of vision for 2 years in his left eye. Excision biopsy from an inferotemporal conjunctival mass revealed high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) with lymphovascular invasion and positive margins. The tumor bed was irradiated to 80 Gy using strontium 90 β-applicator. After 13 months, fine-needle aspiration cytology from a suspicious preauricular lymphadenopathy found metastatic cells. Ipsilateral supra-omohyoid neck dissection showed three positive nodes out of 15, and the left neck was irradiated. He is disease free at present,

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid was first reported in 1991. This tumour type may develop as associated to Hashimoto thyroiditis. There are two variants of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of thyroid. The conventional and the sclerosing variants. Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia of thyroid (SCME) has recently been recognised as a separate disease entity by the WHO. We report a case of SCME in a 62-year-old male patient who presented with a painless anterior neck swelling. Total thyroidectomy was performed, and no adjuvant treatment administered. The patient remai

INTRODUCTION: Thyroglossal duct cysts (TDC) are common midline neck swellings resulting from embryological remnants of the thyroglossal duct. They often contain ectopic thyroid tissue and malignant transformation has been reported, most commonly to papillary thyroid carcinoma. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) usually occurs in the salivary glands and only rarely in the thyroid. This is the first case of a MEC occurring within a thyroglossal duct remnant.
PRESENTATION OF A CASE: A 73 year old lady presented with a thyroglossal duct cyst. She declined surgical excision, as she was adamant she wan

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the trachea is a rare tumour, especially in the paediatric population. We report the case of a 9-year-old boy with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the trachea that was preoperatively diagnosed as an intraluminal polypoid mass arising from the trachea and extending into the right main bronchus. A complete resection of the tumour with reconstruction and end-to-end anastomosis of the trachea was performed. The patient is now, 24 months after surgery, free of disease.
