Polymyalgia rheumatica and thyroid papillary carcinoma.

This is a case report of a 64-year-old woman with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and thyroid papillary carcinoma. Peripheral blood lymphocyte response to pokeweed mitogen, concanavalin A and phytohemagglutinin was increased compared to controls during aggravation of PMR. These responses were normalized to control values after low-dose corticosteroid therapy (prednisolone 10 mg; 7 days and 7.5 mg; 3 days) and PMR symptoms disappeared. The patient had undergone total neck thyroidectomy and metastatic neck lymph node dissection three and six years after the onset of PMR, respectively. Nine months a

Genetic Alterations in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma With Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: ANK3, an Indolent Maintainer of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (TH) is a risk factor for the occurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), which is considered to be the most common type of thyroid cancer. In recent years, the prevalence of PTC with TH has been increasing, but little is known about the genetic alteration in PTC with TH. This study analyzed the mutation spectrum and mutation signature of somatic single nucleotide variants (SNV) for 10 non-tumor and tumor pair tissues of PTC with TH using whole-exome sequencing. The ANK3 protein expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in PTC with TH and PTC samples. Moreov

p27kip1 expression distinguishes papillary hyperplasia in Graves' disease from papillary thyroid carcinoma.

In most cases, the histopathologic and cytologic distinction between Graves' disease and papillary thyroid carcinoma is relatively easy, but on occasion Graves' disease may simulate a thyroid papillary carcinoma. For example, papillary fronds with fibrovascular cores may be present in both Graves' disease and papillary carcinoma. p27kip1 (p27) is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitory protein that has been shown to be an independent prognostic factor in a variety of human tumors. Our previous studies of p27 expression in hyperplastic and neoplastic endocrine lesions showed that the level of p27

Tubulocystic carcinoma of kidney associated with papillary renal cell carcinoma.

Tubulocystic renal cell carcinoma (TCRCC) is a rare variant of renal cell carcinoma, which has distinct histology but there is some controversy about its association with papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC) and cell of origin in literature. We report an 18-year-old girl with the rare TCRCC of kidney associated with PRCC with metastases to the para-aortic nodes. The patient presented with hematuria and a right renal mass with enlarged regional nodes for which a radical nephrectomy with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection was done. On gross examination, a solid cystic lesion involving the lo

SYNCHRONOUS ONCOCYTIC CARCINOMA, MEDULLARY CARCINOMA AND PAPILLARY MICROCARCINOMA OF THYROID.

Thyroid tumors are the most frequently reported endocrine malignancies. However thyroid collision tumors are rare pathological findings, representing less than 1% of thyroid cancers. In our case, a 50-year-old female patient presented with a complaint of neck swelling. During the exams, nodules were identified in both thyroid lobes. Pathologic analysis of a fine-needle aspiration biopsy(FNA) has been obtained from a 60×50 mm hypoechoic nodule raised suspicion of oncocytic carcinoma(OC). Another FNA was performed on a 17×11 mm hypoechoic solid nodule, revealing features of medullary thyroid car

Papillary Carcinoma of Lateral Thyroglossal Duct Cyst with De Novo Papillary Carcinoma of Thyroid: A Rare Case Report.

Thyroglossal duct cysts are commonly seen in the midline of the neck, accounting for 7% of cases presenting with midline swelling. Carcinoma within a thyroglossal duct cyst is extremely rare, occurring in fewer than 1% of cases, and lateral occurrences are particularly uncommon. This case describes a 25-year-old female with papillary carcinoma identified in the left lateral thyroglossal duct cyst, along with de novo papillary carcinoma in the right thyroid lobe.

Patients with Oncocytic Variant Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Have a Similar Prognosis to Matched Classical Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Controls.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that oncocytic variant papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) may be more aggressive, with higher rates of recurrent disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate characteristics and outcomes of patients with oncocytic variant PTC compared to classical PTC. METHODS: Patients with oncocytic variant PTC were retrospectively identified from 519 patients who underwent thyroidectomy for PTC between January 2009 and August 2015. Data collected included patient demographics, laboratory and pathology findings, imaging studies, treatment, and follow-up. Patients

[Clinical and pathological differences between papillary thyroid carcinoma with Graves' disease and papillary thyroid carcinoma with Hashimoto's thyroiditis].

Objective: To explore the clinical and pathological differences between papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with Graves' disease (GD) and PTC with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Methods: A total of 33 PTC patients with GD and 132 PTC patients with HT in the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University from January 2009 to December 2015 were enrolled. The clinical and histopathological data were analyzed. Results: The average serum concentration of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) of PTCs with GD was significantly lower than PTCs with HT [0.01 (0, 0.10) mU/L vs 2.28(1.51, 3.14) mU/L, P<0

Recurrent Papillary Apocrine Carcinoma of the Vulva.

Apocrine carcinoma of the vulva is a rare form of vulvar cancer, with the papillary subtype being even more uncommon. There are less than 20 reported cases of vulvar apocrine carcinoma, and only 2 reported cases specifically of the tubulo-papillary subtype. Here we discuss the case of a woman in her mid-50s who presented with recurrent vulvar papillary apocrine carcinoma and was treated with wide local excision. Prognosis and treatment guidelines are not standardized because of the rarity of this condition. Given that the incidence of vulvar cancer has been rising in younger women and can init

Papillary thyroid carcinoma with invasion of the trachea.

INTRODUCTION: Papillary thyroid carcinoma typically has a favourable survival rate and a low recurrence rate. However, extrathyroidal extension has a significant negative impact on survival. Among the extrathyroidal extensions, invasion of the trachea by papillary thyroid carcinoma is rare and serves as a marker of more aggressive tumour behaviour. This case report aims to highlight the unusual clinical course of papillary thyroid carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old female patient from Gaza has been diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma in 2020. With mediastinal lymph node invasi

Exceptional Location of a Papillary Carcinoma of the Thyroid.

Thyroid cancers are a rare condition; of these, differentiated thyroid carcinomas are the most common and have a good prognosis with timely diagnosis and treatment. In the case of a late diagnosis, these carcinomas can breach the thyroid capsule and invade the laryngo-tracheal axis. The surgical treatment of locally invasive papillary thyroid carcinoma is a complete resection with the preservation of laryngeal functions when it is possible. We report the case of an 80-year-old patient who presented with inspiratory dyspnea and hemoptysis showing endotracheal localization of a papillary carcino

Stensen's Duct Carcinoma with a Papillary Architecture.

Primary carcinoma of the parotid duct (Stensen's duct carcinoma) is a rare entity, first described in 1927 and with approximately thirty-one cases reported in the English literature. Criteria for diagnosis are primarily demonstration of an origin from the Stensen's duct lining and exclusion of parotid gland, accessory parotid, oral mucosal and adjacent minor salivary gland origin. The carcinoma is usually of a specific type, and most have been described as squamous, mucoepidermoid, or undifferentiated adenocarcinomas. We report an unusual case of Stensen's duct carcinoma showing a primarily ba

Papillary squamotransitional cell carcinoma of the vagina.

A case of a papillary squamotransitional cell carcinoma (PSTCC) of the vagina with a follow-up of 3 years is presented here. The characteristics of this case support a squamous rather than urothelial origin of this rare entity. Unlike its counterparts in the cervix uteri, the clinical behavior of vaginal PSTCC is more favorable than squamous cell carcinoma. Histological and clinical features are compared to those of previously described cases of vaginal and cervical PSTCC.

Stromal elastosis in papillary thyroid carcinomas.

Stromal elastosis, defined as dense aggregations of elastic fibers, is found in some neoplastic tissues especially in malignant tumors of the breast and lung. Although also found in thyroid tissue, stromal elastosis in thyroid neoplasms have received little attention. To clarify the histopathological significance of stromal elastosis in the thyroid, we examined neoplastic (n = 223) and hyperplastic (n = 82) thyroid tissues in conjunction with cancer tissues (n = 193) of various other organs. Stromal elastosis was observed as deposits of pale homogeneous material in hematoxylin and eosin stain,

Intracystic papillary carcinoma in the male breast.

Intracystic papillary carcinoma is an uncommon noninvasive breast cancer with an excellent prognosis. We report the case of a 74-year-old man. Of the diagnostic tests performed, ultrasonography and pneumocystography were useful for establishing a diagnostic suspicion, however, puncture cytology was inaccurate. Excisional biopsy was necessary to confirm the disease, but also to indicate that local treatment was sufficient.

Isolated extrarenal papillary carcinoma in a child.

A previously healthy 12-year-old boy presented with a mass in the right retroperitoneum adjacent to an ipsilateral hypoplastic kidney. Complete resection of the tumor and kidney were done. The tumor was found to be papillary adenocarcinoma lying 3 cm apart from a contracted kidney, which was free of tumor. No adjuvant therapy was given. After 50 months of follow-up the child is healthy without evidence of tumor recurrence.

Papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.

A case of papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx in a 50-year-old man is reported. The lesion was located in the supraglottic region and grossly presented a characteristic finger-like pattern of growth. The tumour pursued an indolent clinical course, and the patient is well and free of disease after 47 months of follow-up. The present paper recapitulates the macro- and microscopic features of this rare neoplasm and stresses its differential diagnosis with other exophytic squamous cell carcinomas of the region.
