Simultaneous elevated levels of ectopic arginine vasopressin (AVP) and ectopic adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) were found in a patient with small cell carcinoma (SCC). The finding of one of these paraendocrine syndromes at the time of diagnosis is common; however, the simultaneous presence of both syndromes has been reported in the literature only on four occasions in the past 25 years. This is the only report in which elevated plasma levels of both hormones are documented in a patient who simultaneously fulfills the criteria for the syndrome associated with each ectopically produced peptide. A 65-year-old woman with a history of recurrent vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia was found to have small cell carcinoma (SCC). Exfoliative cytology was instrumental in the discovery of each episode of vaginal neoplasia. Thorough examination of the patient established the tumor as being primary to the vagina, and immunohistochemistry confirmed it to be a neuroendocrine SCC. Eleven patients with neuroendocrine SCC of the vagina have been reported previously. Morphologic characteristics and histogenesis are discussed within the context of the embryology and natural history of extrapulmonary-geni

Primary small cell carcinoma (SCC) of stomach is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy with extremely poor prognosis. We report a 71-year-old man with upper abdominal pain diagnosed as single hepatic metastasis of SCC from mixed SCC and adenocarcinoma of the stomach. An endoscopic examination showed the presence of Borrmann type 2 gastric cancer, 2 cm in size on the lesser curvature of antrum. An abdominal CT scan revealed a huge dumbbell shaped mass with peripheral arterial enhancement and central low density in left lobe of the liver. Endoscopic biopsies showed solid proliferation of small

Neuroendocrine tumors comprise a large group of malignancies which share unique morphological features and are characterized by the presence of neuroendocrine markers such as synaptophysin, chromogranin-A, and CD56 (N-CAM), ranging from indolent tumors, such as carcinoid tumors, to aggressive tumors, such as small cell carcinoma. The lung is the most common site for primary neuroendocrine tumors. Extrapulmonary primary sites of small cell carcinoma are rare but have been documented arising from various sites including esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum, gallbladder, thymus, salivary gland, o

The presence of small cell carcinoma within the submandibular gland is an uncommon clinical entity. However, other small round blue cell tumors are encountered in the head and neck with greater frequency. These include lymphoma, Ewing's sarcoma, melanoma, esthesioneuroblastoma, and neuroblastoma. A basic knowledge of the immunohistochemical studies available to distinguish each these tumors from one another significantly improves the frequency of accurate and timely initial diagnosis. We report a case of small cell carcinoma of the submandibular gland and review the other common small round bl

We describe a previously unreported variant of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCis) with small cell morphology mimicking intraepidermal Merkel cell carcinoma. The lesion, arising on the upper lip of an 86-year-old man, displayed biphasic histology: a predominant population of small basaloid cells and a superficial bowenoid component. Immunohistochemistry showed divergent expression patterns, and PCR confirmed HPV6. Complete spontaneous regression occurred post-biopsy. This case expands the histopathologic spectrum of SCCis and suggests an intraepidermal basaloid variant potentiall

BACKGROUND: Intrathyroidal thymic carcinoma (ITC) is a rare malignant epithelial tumour of thymic origin occurring within the thyroid. Histologically, it resembles thymic carcinoma, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most common subtype, and immunohistochemical staining typically exhibits features consistent with thymic neoplasms.
CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 68-year-old woman who presented with a left-sided neck mass of one year's duration. And the neck lump had been gradually enlarging over the course of a year, reaching the size of a goose egg within six months. Thyroid ultras

We report a case of small cell carcinoma of the urethra with inguinal lymph node metastases. A 50- year-old female patient presented with gross hematuria. Cystoscopy and computed tomography (CT) revealed a tumor surrounding the urethra and an inguinal lymphadenopathy. Biopsy of the urethral tumor demonstrated small cell carcinoma. Four courses of chemotherapy with etoposide and cisplatin, followed by 66 Gy of irradiation achieved complete remission. Unfortunately, 14 months later, positroemission-CT scan revealed recurrence of inguinal lymph node metastases. Although seven courses of chemother

We report a rare case of small cell carcinoma of the stomach with metastasis to the liver and invasion of the pancreas, which was associated with acute peritonitis due to perforation of the stomach. CPT-11/CDDP chemotherapy achieved a partial response. A 60-year-old man suddenly developed abdominal pain and visited the emergency room. We diagnosed acute peritonitis due to perforation of the digestive tract because CT scan showed free air in the abdominal cavity. An emergency operation was performed with an omental patch for closing the perforated hole in the stomach. Excisional biopsy was perf

Primary small cell carcinoma of the periampullary region is rare. Only four patients have been reported previously. The authors examined a patient with ampullary small cell carcinoma using a range of immunocytochemical stains. This tumor shows morphologic and neuroendocrine features similar to its pulmonary and extrapulmonary counterparts.

The authors studied the clinical and pathologic features of 38 small cell carcinomas of the large intestine. Most were located in the right colon. Overlying adenomas were present in 45% and squamous differentiation in 21% of tumors. Endocrine differentiation was present in all tumors by at least one method; neuron-specific enolase, dense-core granules, and synaptophysin were present in most cases. Seventy-one percent of tumors metastasized to the liver; 64% of patients were dead at five months follow-up. Twenty-one poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas and undifferentiated carcinomas of the la

The presence of muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (m- and nAChR, respectively) in small cell carcinomas (SCC) of the lung was assessed by measurement of specific binding of (-)[3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate ([3H]QNB) and 125I-alpha-bungarotoxin, respectively. Of five SCC studied, four were originally derived from patients with the Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, an autoimmune disease of neuromuscular transmission, and one was from a patient without evidence of neurological disease. There was no evidence of nAChR, but all tumors bound (-)[3H]QNB in a saturable and specific manner

Nineteen cell lines derived from various malignant tissues of 15 patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung (SCCL) have been studied. The results showed heterogeneity in all cell lines, with no one consistent abnormality among them. Cell lines from 11 of the patients had minute and double minute chromosomes, and cell lines from 2 patients had abnormally banding regions, designated as ABRs, as distinguished from homogeneously staining regions (HSRs). The latter 2 and several of the former cell lines were derived from specimens taken before the patients were placed on therapy. All but 2 of t

A 55-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for jaundice. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography showed a mass in the pancreatic head as well as biliary obstruction. We strongly suspected invasive ductal carcinoma of the pancreas. We performed pancreaticoduodenectomy with partial resection of the portal vein. The histopathological diagnosis was small cell carcinoma of the pancreas. We detected metastasis of the right hilar lymph node in PET-CT scan performed 2 months after the surgery and started chemotherapy with cisplatin(CDDP)plus irinotecan(CPT-11). However, we observed recurrent m

OBJECTIVES: Small cell carcinomas in extrapulmonary sites (ESmCCs) are very rare. ESmCCs originating in the head and neck account for approximately 10% of all ESmCCs, and there are few reports about this disease. ESmCCs have an aggressive natural history characterized by widespread metastasis. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics and outcomes of patients with ESmCCs of the head and neck.
METHODS: The outcomes of 21 patients with ESmCCs of the head and neck treated between January 2001 and December 2015 at the authors' hospital and associated facilities were reviewed.

A 69-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a chief complaint of asymptomatic gross hematuria. After radiological evaluations, left nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff was performed under a clinical diagnosis of a left ureteral tumor (2 cm). Histological examination revealed a small cell carcinoma of the ureter (pT3, pN1). After the operation, adjuvant chemotherapy with irinotecan, etoposide and cisplatin was administered in combination with radiation therapy. At 14 months after the operation, there has been no evidence of recurrence. To our knowledge, this is the 22nd report of a sma

We report a case of primary undifferentiated small cell carcinoma of the ureter. A 62-year-old man showed gross hematuria. Retrograde pyelography and CT scan revealed a tumor in the left ureter. The light microscopic examination revealed small cell carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a small cell carcinoma originating in the ureter in Japan.
