Vulval squamous cell carcinoma: a review.

Vulval squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) represents approximately 90% of all vulval cancers. Despite its rarity relative to other gynaecological or skin malignancies, the recent growing body of epidemiological and clinical evidence has resulted in important refinements to national guidelines. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the current evidence regarding the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of VSCC. There are two distinct aetiological pathways currently identified in the pathogenesis of VSCC. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-dependent VSCC is commonly found in y

Primary Submandibular Gland Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

This case report and review examines the rare diagnosis and treatment of primary submandibular gland squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In this paper, the authors report a case of primary submandibular gland squamous cell carcinoma from their institution. The authors then searched PubMed, ScienceDirect, and WileyOnline Library databases for previous case reports of this disease. The authors collected and reported the following: patient demographics, presentation, physical examination, lymph node involvement, histopathology, treatments, and patient outcomes. Thirteen case reports were found from 19

Granuloma Annulare Mimicking Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Misdiagnosing granuloma annulare (GA) for a malignant process can lead to unnecessary and costly treatment avenues for the patient. Thus, it is salient for surgeons to independently evaluate a patient's clinical and histopathologic presentation before proceeding with surgery. We present a case of a 67-year-old male with a biopsy-proven squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) on the dorsal hand who presented for Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS). At this time, the surgeon noticed the histopathologic diagnosis did not match the patient's clinical appearance. GA was diagnosed following a repeat biopsy of the

Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Its Variants.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common malignant neoplasms involving the anterior skull base, resulting from local invasion from an adjacent anatomical region. The primary sites of origin are most frequently the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, and less often the skin and orbit. Treatment strategies for these tumors have evolved, although management remains challenging due to the proximity to critical structures and their location at the intracranial-extracranial interface. The rarity of these tumors, and limited numbers at any one institution, has meant that most published

Cutaneous leishmaniasis mimicking squamous cell carcinoma.

A 41-year-old man from Cuero, Texas with a nonhealinglesion on his left cheek was referred to ourclinic for removal of a squamous cell carcinoma. Thepatient first noticed a "pimple" on his left cheek 3-4months prior to presentation. When the lesion beganto grow he presented to his primary care physician anda biopsy was taken, showing "atypical squamous cellproliferation." Mohs surgery was performed and thenodule was removed with no evidence of malignancyseen on histopathology. Upon review of the surgicalbiopsies by consulting pathologists, the diagnosis ofleishmaniasis was established and late

Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Caruncle.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lacrimal caruncle is a rare entity. The authors report the management and outcomes of 3 cases of caruncle SCC. Case 1 underwent wide margin surgical excision with adjuvant topical chemotherapy for a poorly differentiated SCC. He later developed regional lymph node metastasis and required modified radical neck dissection. Case 2 underwent wide margin surgical excision with cryotherapy and adjuvant topical chemotherapy for an invasive moderately differentiated SCC. She later developed a recurrence and underwent orbital exenteration. Case 3 was a moderately di

[Squamous cell carcinoma in localized scleroderma].

We present a case of a young 26-year-old woman, who has been suffering from localised scleroderma (morphea) for 15 years. Recently, a lesion on the dorsum of her right foot ulcerated. Based on a CT scan and X-ray a diagnosis of ulcerative osteomyellitis was established. The patient was treated with a combination of antibiotics. Subsequent histological examinations showed granulomatous tissue and chronic inflammatory changes on top of pseudoepiteliomatous hyperplasia. The patients status was deteriorating, which resulted in a limb amputation under the knee. Three months later, there was a metas

Squamous cell carcinoma in lichen planopilaris.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a rare variant of cutaneous lichen planus that preferentially involves hair follicles. OBSERVATION: We describe the case of an 87-year-old woman with cicatricial alopecia due to lichen planopilaris. The diagnosis was based on clinical evaluation, histopathology and trichoscopy. Squamous cell carcinoma developed within the hairless area after 18 years of evolution. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to consider the association between lichen planopilaris and squamous cell carcinoma and to ensure a close follow-up of LPP patients, especially when there is a lo

[Chemoradiotherapy for anal squamous cell carcinoma].

In the guidelines on American National Comprehensive Cancer Network, local excision with adequate margin is recommended as a primary treatment for patients with T1, N0, and well-differentiated anal margin cancers. Otherwise, concurrent chemotherapy using mitomycin C(10mg/m², day 1 and 29)and 5-FU(1,000mg/m2/day, continuous intravenous infusion, day 1-4 and 29-32)with radiation(total dose of 45-59 Gy)is the recommended primary treatment for all other stages of nonmetastatic anal margin and anal canal cancer. Abdominoperineal resection is performed for patients with local recurrent diseases or r

Synchronous bilateral tonsil squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: We discuss the treatment and pathology of simultaneous bilateral metastatic palatine tonsil carcinoma. The current literature of the diagnosis and management of unknown primary oropharyngeal neoplasms is reviewed including the role of positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. STUDY DESIGN: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA) of the palatine tonsil typically presents as a unilateral mass in the oropharynx or as a mass in the ipsilateral neck indicating a lymph node involved with metastasis. The carcinoma rarely presents with involvement of the contralateral lymph nodes, and this situat

Squamous cell carcinoma of the foot.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the foot are relatively common, but have been infrequently reported in the orthopaedic literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients with SCC of the foot treated at a single institution from 1998 to 2005 were studied retrospectively with regard to risk factors for the disease, treatment, and functional and oncologic outcomes. The mean duration of postoperative followup was 43 (range, 24 to 105) months. RESULTS: Eight of the 12 patients had identifiable risk factors for SCC. Inadequate or inappropriate procedures had been previously performed

Gingival squamous cell carcinoma in adolescence.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare finding in the adolescent population, with most cases occurring in patients with underlying heritable diseases or immunologic conditions. Moreover, the incidence of oral SCC in this age group is extremely low. While isolated cases of adolescent oral SCC have been documented, most have been primary tongue or lip lesions. We report 4 cases of gingival SCC occurring in otherwise healthy adolescent patients. The preliminary clinical impressions ranged from factitial injury to inflammatory tissue. Microscopic similarities, including overlap with pseudoepithel

[Peri-implantitis or squamous cell carcinoma?].

INTRODUCTION: Squamous cell carcinoma developed around dental implants has seldom been described. It simulates peri-implantitis. The authors present two cases and a literature review. CASE REPORTS: A 70 year-old woman presented with an exophytic tumor developed around dental implants placed in the anterior part of the mandible. Panoramic X-rays showed major osteolysis, especially around the distal abutment implants. A 72 year-old patient, smoker, presented with chronic lichen planus; he was carrying two implants supporting an overdenture with ball-attachments, placed 15 years before. He prese

Squamous cell carcinoma of the urachus.

A 64-year-old man was admitted with complaints of abdominal pain and pollakisuria. A soft mass was palpable under his navel. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 9 x 6 cm tumor, which was composed of a cystic lesion arising from the urachus and a solid mass component at the urinary bladder dome. Urine cytology specimens showed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Serum SCC level was increased and the tumor was removed surgically. Histological examination detected well-differentiated SCC, which had invaded the urinary bladder and the peritoneum. The patient has been followed up without recurre

Lupus vulgaris with squamous cell carcinoma.

Tuberculosis is still a significant problem in developing countries. Cutaneous forms of tuberculosis account for approximately 10% of all cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Cutaneous tuberculosis may be because of true infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis or because of tuberculids. Tuberculids are immunological reactions to haematogenously spread antigenic components of M. tuberculosis. True cutaneous tuberculosis may be because of inoculation or haematogenous spread of M. tuberculosis to the skin. Lupus vulgaris is the commonest form of true cutaneous tuberculosis. Other forms of true

Premalignant and early squamous cell carcinoma.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common sun-induced precancerous neoplasm confined to the epidermis. The AK is the initial manifestation of a continuum of clinical and histologic abnormalities that progresses to invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Bowen's disease, also known as squamous cell carcinoma in situ, represents early SCC confined to the epidermis. More than half of all SCCs contain p53 tumor suppressor gene mutations. Like SCCs, the vast majority of AKs and Bowen's disease lesions are asymptomatic. Each AK and suspicious lesion should be treated before it progresses to invasive SCC. D
