Transitional cell carcinoma in ureteral stump after radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma.

In a seventy-five-year-old white man gross total painless hematuria developed one year after right radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma. Results of physical examination, laboratory studies, intravenous pyelography, and cystoscopy were normal at that time. One year later, the patient had another episode of gross hematuria. Once again, physical examination, laboratory values, intravenous pyelogram, and cystogram were normal. A right retrograde ureterogram revealed a midureteral filling defect. Total ureterectomy and bladder cuff excision ensued. Pathologic examination revealed well-diffe

Concurrent renal cell carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma in a chronic hemodialysis patient.

A 60-year-old female patient had been on maintenance hemodialysis for 12 years was suffering from gross hematuria. Subsequent image studies revealed left renal and ureteral tumors. She then received left radical nephroureterectomy. Histological examination revealed the renal tumor was renal cell carcinoma and ureteral tumor was transitional cell carcinoma respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of simultaneous occurrence of these two urological cancers in a chronic hemodialysis patient. Our case may imply the increased susceptibility of urological malignancy in dialysis

Transitional cell carcinoma of ureteral stump after radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma.

A 68-year-old male presented with microscopic hematuria during a routine checkup after undergoing a radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma. Retrograde ureterography demonstrated a ureteral stump tumor. The ureteral stump was completely resected with a bladder cuff and histologic diagnosis was grade 2 to 3 transitional cell carcinoma of the ureteral stump. He is doing well and has been tumor-free for 2 years. The ureteral stump must be correctly evaluated using retrograde ureterography in any patient with a prior history of bladder cancer. Even if a patient had no history of ureterial can

A renal cell carcinoma extending into the renal pelvis simulating transitional cell carcinoma.

A case of renal cell carcinoma with unusual extension is reported, in which the radiographic findings have a close resemblance to those of transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. We emphasize that it is occasionally difficult to draw a distinction between transitional cell carcinoma with renal invasion and renal cell carcinoma with renal pelvic extension even by computed tomography (CT) and angiography.

[A case of synchronous contralateral renal cell carcinoma and ureteral transitional cell carcinoma].

A case of synchronous contralateral renal cell carcinoma and ureteral transitional cell carcinoma is reported. A 56-year-old man, who had been incidentally found to have an abnormal mass in the upper pole of the right kidney on ultrasound sonography, was admitted on January 8, 1985. CT scanning and renal arteriography revealed right renal malignancy. Right radical nephrectomy was performed and histological examination showed adenocarcinoma, granular cell type of the right kidney. He was discharged on February 3, 1985. Two months postoperatively, he was rehospitalized for macroscopic hematuria.

Uncommon skeletal metastasis secondary to transitional cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Canine transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is the most common type of malignant tumor of the urinary system. This tumor rarely metastasizes to bones, and dogs most commonly present with lower urinary tract signs. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old female spayed beagle presented with unilateral front-limb lameness in which pain was localized to the shoulder joint. Surgical bone biopsy following abnormal radiographic lesions noted in the scapula was consistent with metastatic carcinoma of unknown origin. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a mass in the trigone region of the urinary bladder, w

Conservative management of upper tract transitional cell carcinoma.

AIM: Our aim was to review the current literature describing the endoscopic management of upper tract transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Review of published, peer-reviewed articles relating the primary ureteroscopic or percutaneous management of upper tract TCC was performed using the MEDLINE database. RESULTS: Historically, the gold-standard management for upper tract TCC consists of nephroureterectomy with excision of a bladder cuff. The employment of endoscopic management with these neoplasms was initially instituted in individuals with imperative indications, inclu

Percutaneous management of upper-tract transitional cell carcinoma.

The gold standard treatment for supravesical urothelial carcinoma has been open radical nephroureterectomy based on the premise that this cancer is a field defect. However, nephroureterectomy is an extensive procedure that may not be tolerated by all patients. Percutaneous and ureteroscopic approaches have been utilized in an attempt to avoid the potential morbidity associated with traditional open surgery. This review provides an update on percutaneous management of upper-tract urothelial transitional-cell cancer based on a review of the pertinent literature.

Ureteroscopic management of upper tract transitional cell carcinoma.

The expanding experience with endoscopic techniques for treating upper tract urothelial malignancy demonstrates its safety and efficacy in carefully selected patients. Diagnostic accuracy can be enhanced, and pathologic confirmation of tumor grade and stage is possible. In carefully selected patients who have low-grade and low-stage disease, the results of endourologic management have been encouraging. Patients with an anatomic or functionally solitary kidney, bilateral disease, or significant renal insufficiency can often be considered candidates for endoscopic treatment as the first line of

[Severe hypercalcemia due to renal transitional cell carcinoma].

Hypercalcemia is a common metabolic disorder, especially in the elderly. The most common etiologies are hyperparathyroidism or malignancy, most often of the lung, breast, kidney or hematological system. Because hypercalcemia is an uncommon manifestation in urinary tract epithelial tumors, especially those of the renal pelvis, we present a man aged 62 years with hypercalcemia due to renal transitional cell carcinoma.

Treatment options for upper tract transitional-cell carcinoma.

Nephroureterectomy with a bladder cuff remains the gold standard of treatment of transitional-cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract. The natural history of the disease, specifically its multifocal nature and its propensity for local recurrence, argues for an aggressive treatment approach. Good clinical results using renal-sparing treatment of low-grade ureteral tumors reveal the feasibility of renal-sparing approaches in limited circumstances. It is likely that, with increasing use of renal-sparing therapy by endoscopic means, topical chemotherapeutic agents will take on an analogous role

Transitional cell carcinoma of the pelvicalices and ureter.

Transitional cell carcinoma accounts for about 90% of all cancers of the renal pelvis and more than 90% of all cancers of the ureter. Its clinical presentation is nonspecific. Radiology plays a critical role in detection, evaluation, and disease monitoring. We reviewed the pathologic and clinical features of transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract, with attention to its radiology appearance, staging, and treatment.

Calcified transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis.

Six patients with calcified transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis were encountered over a 10-year period, and the radiographic features in these cases are presented. Radiographically discernible calcification is one of the less common manifestations of this lesion, and the pattern of calcification may be variable. However, the combination of a coarse, punctate pattern with a mucosal lesion on excretory or retrograde urography should suggest the diagnosis and prompt further investigation.

Transitional cell carcinoma in the Muir-Torre syndrome.

The association of multiple sebaceous neoplasms and visceral malignancies is known as the Muir-Torre syndrome. We describe a patient who had papillary transitional cell carcinoma of the right renal pelvis resected in 1981 and papillary transitional cell carcinoma of the left renal pelvis removed surgically in 1983. Recurrent transitional cell carcinoma necessitated further resection of tumor in the right renal pelvis in 1983, right nephrectomy and partial ureterectomy in 1984, and removal of the right ureteral stump in 1985. History included multiple seborrheic keratoses, a keratoacanthoma and
