PURPOSE: To clarify the imaging characteristics of carcinosarcomas, which are the most common malignant mixed epithelial and mesenchymal tumors (MEMTs) of the uterus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed MR findings of 17 histopathologically confirmed cases with carcinosarcomas, including the size, growth pattern, signal intensity, contrast enhancement, and extrauterine spread in each case.

Carcinosarcomas are a very rare group of true malignant tumors of the salivary gland. As the name indicates, the tumor is composed of an epithelial and a mesenchymal component, both malignant. We report a rare case of submandibular salivary gland carcinosarcoma ('true' malignant mixed tumour) which occurred in a 77-year-old man. Microscopic examination showed a neoplasm comprised of sarcomatous elements (chondrosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and osteosarcoma) with tabular salivary ductal adenocarcinoma. A short review of the literature is also presented and the poor prognosis of these tumours, in spite of complete surgical removal and additional radiation therapy and chemotherapy, is discussed.

Three cases of carcinosarcoma of the salivary gland, two in the submandibular gland, and one in the parotid, were investigated with CT and exhibited a variety of findings. The density of the tumors was lower than that of normal submandibular tissue. A calcification was found in one case. One case showed extensive lymphadenopathy. The parotid lesion had low central density with an enhancing margin.

Malignant tumours with teratoid or blastomatous features are exceptionally rare in the upper respiratory tract with only 8 documented cases, including the 3 in this report.
