PURPOSE: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a measure of arterial stiffness that reflects vascular ageing and predicts risk for cardiovascular disease. We developed a PWV measurement method that uses dual-impedance cardiography (d-ICG) to address limitations of other common methods (e.g. ultrasound, tonometry, etc.), as well as to enable PWV assessments across a broader range of populations. This pre-registered, cross-sectional study tested for the first time the extent to which d-ICG PWV associates with cardiometabolic risk factors (i.e. blood pressure and other metabolic syndrome components) and v

BACKGROUND: Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) are characterized by different levels of physical capacity, which depends not only on the anatomical advancement of atherosclerosis, but also on the individual cardiovascular hemodynamic response to exercise. The aim of this study was evaluating the relationship between parameters of exercise capacity assessed via cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and impedance cardiography (ICG) hemodynamics in patients with CAD.
METHODS: Exercise capacity was assessed in 54 patients with CAD (41 men, aged 59.5 ± 8.6 years) within 6 weeks after re

BACKGROUND: Whether there are sex differences in hemodynamic profiles among people with elevated blood pressure is not well understood and could guide personalization of treatment.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We described the clinical and hemodynamic characteristics of adults with elevated blood pressure in China using impedance cardiography. We included 45,082 individuals with elevated blood pressure (defined as systolic blood pressure of ≥130 mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure of ≥80 mmHg), of which 35.2% were women. Overall, women had a higher mean systolic blood pressure than men (139.0 [±15.7]

Acute kidney injury (AKI) in cancer patients may disrupt anticarcinogenic treatment and greatly increase associated mortality rates. The present study reported on the management of cancer patients with AKI and, from the nephrologic viewpoint, on the significance of fine volume control during the continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). The records of 117 cancer patients with AKI treated over three years were reviewed and their data were compared with those of 120 healthy controls. AKI was defined according to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes criteria with serum creatinine leve

INTRODUCTION: Maternal vascular adaptation to pregnancy involves the coordinated augmentation of both systemic and uteroplacental circulations, with the concomitant development of a new fetoplacental circuit. Disturbances of maternal hemodynamic adaptation in early pregnancy are often associated with compromise in the other circulations, although the assessment of maternal vascular function by conventional means is cumbersome and expensive.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess maternal hemodynamic function with a noninvasive cardiographic monitor, and to correlate the findings to both uteroplacent

Both respiratory and cardiodynamic parameters were analyzed (the latter non invasively by means of a computerized impedance cardiograph) in 6 subjects at the start of voluntary dorsal ankle flexions. Increased mean inspiratory flow with a slow reduction in end tidal PCO2 was shown in the breath following the start of movements, and these findings indicate the nervous origin of this hyperventilation. Within the same breath, left cardiac output, stroke volume and ventricular ejection time remained unchanged, and the same is true of heart rate and ventricular performance indexes depending on both

INTRODUCTION: Currently, standard methods for measuring cardiac output are either invasive (i.e. flow probe) or are limited in terms of short measurement intervals and measurement variability (i.e. echocardiography). The ability to reliably measure cardiac output in a non-invasive manner in large animals would provide a valuable tool to expand functional cardiovascular endpoints in preclinical safety studies. PhysioFlow® is a novel method that uses waveform analysis of an impedance signal to measure cardiac output non-invasively. Unlike cardiac impedance techniques in the past, PhysioFlow® is

(1) Background: The measurement of hemodynamic parameters has proven to be crucial in the treatment of hospitalized heart failure patients, necessitating invasive measurement by right heart catheterization (RHC). The reliability of whole-body impedance cardiography (ICG) among this cohort has not been investigated to date; (2) Methods: The RHC and whole-body ICG examinations measured cardiac output (CO), the cardiac index (CI), total peripheral resistance (TPR), and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). To assess the accuracy of the whole-body ICG measurement, bias and precision were calculated

BACKGROUND: Although the prone position providing better exposure for anorectal surgery is required it can cause a reduction of cardiac output and cardiac index. The goal was to compare haemodynamic changes assessed by impedance cardiography during anorectal surgery under low-dose spinal anaesthesia in lithotomy and jack-knife position.
METHODS: The prospective randomized controlled study included 104, ASA I-II adult patients admitted for elective minor anorectal surgery, assigned to be performed in lithotomy (groupL, n = 52) or jack-knife position (groupJ, n = 52). After arrival to operating

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cardiovascular outcome trials have documented a strong benefit of sodium glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) on the risk of hospitalization for heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) with or without established cardiovascular disease or prior history of HF. The mechanisms, however, are not entirely clear. We aimed to evaluate whether treatment with SGLT2i affected cardiac function using impedance cardiography (ICG) in a randomized placebo-controlled trial.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-three patients with T2D were randomized to receive blind dap

The norms of cardiac output and general peripheral resistance in 81 healthy subjects were determined by impedance-cardiography. The same hemodynamic indices were also studied in 150 patients with ischemic heart disease, idiopathic myocardiopathies, hypertonic disease and acquired valvular diseases in a state of compensation or cardiac insufficiency. The methods of impedance-cardiography and dye dilution were used. A high correlation dependence was found between the results, obtained by the two methods. Discrepancies in the individual results were observed only in the cases with mitral and aort

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) refers to a method of measuring various indicators of the human body under gradually increasing exercise loads to objectively evaluate cardiopulmonary reserve function and exercise endurance. Currently, CPET detection systems primarily measure subjects' ECG, respiratory flow, oxygen (O 2), and carbon dioxide (CO 2) parameters. This paper introduces a non-invasive multi-parameter exercise cardiopulmonary function evaluation system that incorporates impedance cardiography monitoring. The system integrates impedance cardiography monitoring with conventional

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of hemodynamics in patients with acute myocardial infarction is crucial. In clinical practice, the comparison of a new measurement technique with an established one is often needed to see whether they agree sufficiently for the new to replace the old. Such investigations are often analyzed inappropriately, notably by using correlation coefficients. Our objective is to present an alternative approach, suggested by D. G. Altman and J. M. Bland, based on graphical techniques and simple calculations, for evaluation of the agreement of two methods--intermittent

Thoracic electrical bioimpedance is a new non-invasive technique for obtaining haemodynamic parameters. The method involves the passing of low amperage, high frequency current through the thorax. The current induces a change of resistance within the thorax, which is registered by electrodes. The overall impedance of the thorax is a measure of the electrical resistance of the thorax to this high frequency, low amplitude current. In clinical practice, thoracic electrical bioimpedance has been applied in diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic use in patients with heart failure and hypertension,

With significant correlation shown between intrathoracic impedance and intrathoracic fluid volume, the utility of OptiVol fluid index (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) in the management of patients with heart failure has been well-described. Although intrathoracic impedance is mainly affected by the changes in the intrathoracic fluid volume, a "false-positive" OptiVol fluid index can occur in the absence of overt congestive heart failure. We present a case of false positive Optivol fluid index elevation in a woman following breast reconstruction surgery.

A modified impedence cardiographic technique was developed using a tetrapolar apnea monitor and minicomputer system. Evaluation of this technique in premature infants with and without symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus indicates that the magnitude of the cardiac-related deflection in the impedance signal is useful in the assessment of ductus shunting. Since the infant under study is involved only by the attachment of two double electrodes to the thorax, continuous assessment of ductur shunting is possible without disturbing routine care.
