Fitness Does Not Retire: Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Risk of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events in Older Adults.

AIMS: To evaluate the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), directly measured as peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), and the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in older Norwegian adults. METHODS: A total of 1547 individuals aged 70-77 years (784 women) from the Generation 100 Study, examined in 2012 and 2013, were studied. We defined MACE as the first occurrence of acute myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, or cardiovascular death. Sex- and cohort-specific VO2peak categories (20% least fit, 80% fit) were established based on baseline VO2peak and changes over

Coexistence of obesity and unhealthy cardiorespiratory fitness in a cohort of boys.

The aim of the present study was to examine: 1) the coexistence of excessive body weight and low cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), at a level to be considered unhealthy, and 2) the stability (tracking) of this profile. 1754 European boys, aged 8- to 14-years old, were tested for CRF and based on international cut points were classified as having healthy (H) or unhealthy (UN) CRF. Based on BMI they were classified as having normal weight (N), or overweight or obesity (OO). Chi-square was performed with four groups (i.e. N/H, N/UN, OO/H and OO/UN) and the odds ratios were calculated (cross-sectio

2023 update: The importance of cardiorespiratory fitness in the United States.

The American Heart Association issued a Policy Statement in 2013 that characterized the importance of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) as an essential marker of health outcomes and specifically the need for increased assessment of CRF. This statement summarized the evidence demonstrating that CRF is "one of the most important correlates of overall health status and a potent predictor of an individual's future risk of cardiovascular disease." Subsequently, this Policy Statement led to the development of a National Registry for CRF (Fitness Registry and the Importance of Exercise: A National Data

Validity of a cardiorespiratory fitness test for men with mental retardation.

The purpose of this study was to validate a field test of cardiorespiratory fitness for men with mental retardation. The subjects were 19 healthy young men (26 +/- 6 yr) with moderate mental retardation (IQ = 48 +/- 11). Each subject underwent a maximal treadmill test after a three-phase familiarization process. Each subject also completed a 1-mile walk test twice (Rockport Fitness Walking Test = RFWT). The correlation coefficients between peak VO2 on the treadmill and the two 1-mile walks varied from 0.78 to 0.83. When weight, height, age, heart rates of 1-mile walks, and their combinations w

Home-Based Supervised Cardiorespiratory Interval Training Decreases Poststroke Fatigue and Improves Cardiorespiratory Fitness: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Poststroke fatigue (PSF) affects nearly half of all stroke survivors and significantly hinders rehabilitation and daily functioning. There is no established treatment. Low cardiorespiratory fitness may contribute to PSF, suggesting aerobic training as a potential intervention. METHODS: In this 2-center, randomized, open-label, blinded end point trial, we evaluated a home-based, supervised cardiorespiratory interval training program (HS-CITP) in individuals with PSF (Swedish Fatigue Assessment Scale score ≥28) 1 to 7 months poststroke. Participants were randomized (1:1) to either H

Longitudinal Relationships of Physical Activity, Sedentary Time, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, and Muscular Fitness with Body Fatness in Preschoolers.

There is still insufficient knowledge about the potential benefits of physical activity and fitness or the adverse impact of sedentary behaviours on body composition at preschool age. Therefore, we aimed to study the relationships of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary time (ST), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and muscular fitness (MF) with body fat percentage (BF%) in boys and girls. Participants were investigated twice: in the final year of kindergarten, when the boys' median age was 7 years and the girls' median age was 6 years (p = 0.240), and again in the first grad

Cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with cerebral oxygen extraction in Alzheimer's disease.

Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a modifiable determinant of brain health and has been associated with greater brain volume, improved cognition, and reduced dementia risk. However, whether CRF influences cerebral oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), a marker reflecting the balance between cerebral oxygen delivery and metabolic demand, remains poorly understood in aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). We performed a secondary analysis of the Acute Exercise Response on Brain Imaging and Cognition (AEROBIC) study to investigate relationships among CRF, cerebral blood flow (CBF), and OEF in cognitive

Meta-Analysis of Cardiorespiratory Fitness Impairment in Pediatric Heart Transplant Recipients.

Pediatric heart transplant (PHTR) recipients have reduced cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2peak); however, the magnitude of this impairment and its underlying central hemodynamic mechanisms remain poorly characterized. This systematic review and meta-analysis quantified differences in VO2peak and peak exercise central hemodynamics between PHTR recipients and age-matched healthy controls (CON). MEDLINE (PubMed) was searched for studies comparing VO2peak in PHTR recipients and CON. Pooled effect sizes were expressed as weighted mean differences (WMD) using a DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model,

Mid-life cardiorespiratory fitness and risk of late-onset dementia incidence.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is linked to dementia risk, but moderating factors remain unclear. This study examined how and when CRF in adulthood is associated with late-onset dementia (> 65 years) and whether sex, civil status, or education moderate this association. METHODS: In a cohort of 370,980 dementia-free individuals followed for a mean of 11.9 (standard deviation 6.0) years, CRF was estimated via a submaximal cycle test, with dementia incidence obtained from Swedish National Healthcare Registries. RESULTS: Results showed that high CRF was associated with lower demen

Are our nurses healthy? Cardiorespiratory fitness in a very exhausting profession.

OBJECTIVES: Low cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is related to higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, increase in all-cause mortality and higher risk of different tumors. The reverse is also true; improvement in CRF is related to decrease in mortality. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a standard and also the most precise test for determination of CRF - the best possibility is the maximal test measuring different parameters including maximal oxygen consumption. Healthcare professionals throughout the developed world have markedly high rates of sickness absence, burnout, and distress c
