Kidney cancer epidemiology in a French Afro-descendant population: high prevalence of papillary renal cell carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Ethnic disparities in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) subtypes have been well documented in the United States (US), but no comparable data exist for Afro-descendant populations living within a European healthcare system. In the US, several studies have shown a significantly higher incidence of papillary renal cell carcinoma among populations of African descent. The aim of this study is to analyze the epidemiology of kidney cancer in a French Caribbean population, mainly of African descent. METHODS: This retrospective study included all patients who underwent total or partial nephrectomy, o

Prevalence and correlates of vitamin D deficiency in primary school children of South Asian, White European, Black African and Caribbean and White European origin: a cross-sectional survey (2004-2007) in London, Birmingham and Leicester.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in the UK, especially in certain ethnic minority populations. There is limited information on childhood vitamin D status in the UK, or factors associated with vitamin D deficiency. Using a cross-sectional study of 4650 children of South Asian, Black African and Caribbean and White European origins (9-10 years old) surveyed between 2004 and 2007, we investigated measurements of circulating 25(OH)D concentrations (a measure of vitamin D status) and anthropometric measurements. Overall, 68 % of children had 25(OH)D concentrations ≤ 50 nmol/L and were either insuffic

[Hearing loss leading to the diagnosis of granulomatosis with polyangiitis: An unusual case in the Afro-Caribbean population].

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) was diagnosed in a 65-year-old Afro-Caribbean patient presenting initially with hearing loss and a pseudo-tumoral 6cm lung mass. Lung biopsy findings favored the diagnosis of vasculitis. Rapid disease progression was noted with near-complete deafness and lack of speech, severe renal failure necessitating dialysis, and persisting disturbance of consciousness following tonic-clonic seizures due to posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). The patient died one month after admission due to ARDS secondary to ventilator-associated pneumonia. Otologic

Barriers and facilitators to HIV testing among African and Caribbean heritage communities: a mixed methods study.

OBJECTIVES: African and Caribbean heritage (ACH) communities in the UK face disproportionately high rates of HIV and often experience delayed diagnoses, worsening health inequities. Increasing HIV testing in these communities is essential to address these disparities and support the UK's HIV reduction targets. This study examines barriers and facilitators to HIV testing among Bristol's ACH community, a high-prevalence area with significant rates of late diagnoses, filling a critical gap in context-specific data. METHODS: Using a mixed-methods approach, this study combined 29 in-depth intervie

Stigma trajectories, disclosure, access to care, and peer-based supports among African, Caribbean, and Black im/migrant women living with HIV in Canada: findings from a cohort of women living with HIV in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: African, Caribbean, and Black im/migrant women experience a disproportionate burden of HIV relative to people born in Canada, yet there is scarce empirical evidence about the social and structural barriers that influence access to HIV care. The objectives of this study is to estimate associations between African, Caribbean, and Black background and stigma and non-consensual HIV disclosure outcomes, and to understand how experiences of stigma and im/migration trajectories shape access to HIV care and peer supports among African, Caribbean, and Black im/migrant women living with HIV

Molecular detection of Salmonella spp., Listeria spp. and Brucella spp. in fresh artisanal cheese marketed in the city of Barranquilla: A pilot study.

Introduction: Each year approximately 3 million people die as the result of foodborne diseases. The fresh artisan (handmade) cheese produced and distributed in the Colombian Caribbean region is a native product from the departments of Córdoba, Sucre, Bolívar, Atlántico, Magdalena, Cesar, and La Guajira. Its mass consumption increases the risk of infection with Salmonella spp., Listeria spp., and Brucella spp., as it is made with a very rustic technology, with unpasteurized cow milk, without standardized and hygienic procedures and its storage is inadequate. Objective: To detect the presence of

Multiple sclerosis in black South Africans and Zimbabweans.

Multiple sclerosis is rare among the indigenous black people of Africa. The first account of a black patient with multiple sclerosis in South Africa was published as late as 1987. Since then a search to find black patients with multiple sclerosis in Southern Africa has continued. Seven black patients have now been traced in South Africa and five in Zimbabwe in whom a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis can be accepted. Six of the 12 patients became blind, or nearly so, from severe optic neuritis. Multiple sclerosis in these few black patients more often resembled the disorder as it occurs in orien

Incidence of schizophrenia and other psychoses in ethnic minority groups: results from the MRC AESOP Study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of schizophrenia in the African-Caribbean population in England is reported to be raised. We sought to clarify whether (a) the rates of other psychotic disorders are increased, (b) whether psychosis is increased in other ethnic minority groups, and (c) whether particular age or gender groups are especially at risk. METHOD: We identified all people (n=568) aged 16-64 years presenting to secondary services with their first psychotic symptoms in three well-defined English areas (over a 2-year period in Southeast London and Nottingham and a 9-month period in Bristol). Firearm-related threats before migrating to the USA from Latin America and the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Every year, thousands of people from Latin America and the Caribbean are migrating to the USA. Policy-makers have argued that US firearms are fuelling violence in these countries and are contributing to migration. The objective of this article is to examine the proportion of immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean arriving at the US border who have previously been threatened with a firearm. This article further explores sociodemographic factors associated with the likelihood of previous firearm-related threats, whether those threats are associated with post-traumatic stress

Influence of Common Gene Variants on Lipid Levels and Risk of Coronary Heart Disease in Afro-Caribbeans.

A lower mortality rate from coronary artery disease (CAD) and a more favourable lipid profile have been reported in Afro-Caribbeans compared with people of European ancestry. The aim of this study was to determine whether common lipid variants identified in other populations are associated with lipid levels and CAD in Afro-Caribbeans. We studied 705 Afro-Caribbeans (192 with CAD) who were genotyped for 13 lipid-associated variants. We calculated three polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for elevated LDL (LDL-PRS), decreased HDL (HDL-PRS), and elevated triglycerides (TG-PRS). LDL-PRS, HDL-PRS, and TG-

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in women living with HIV who have a Black African and/or Black Caribbean heritage.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment, adherence and linkage to care are lower in Black African and Black Caribbean heritage women living with HIV, affected by significant psychosocial challenges compared to other groups. The COVID-19 lockdowns further amplified these inequalities. We aimed to assess its impact on this population across Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. METHODS: We used an online survey and in-depth interviews to collect data between 01-10-2022 and 01-06-2023. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the survey data and thematic analysis was adopted to analyze the q

Understanding social and clinical associations with unemployment for people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorders: large-scale health records study.

PURPOSE: People with severe mental illness (SMI) experience high levels of unemployment. We aimed to better understand the associations between clinical, social, and demographic inequality indicators and unemployment. METHODS: Data were extracted from de-identified health records of people with SMI in contact with secondary mental health services in south London, UK. A Natural Language Processing text-mining application was applied to extract information on unemployment in the health records. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess associations with unemployment, in people with S

Challenges to Assessing the Prevalence of Cystic Fibrosis in the Caribbean.

UNLABELLED: : Cystic fibrosis (CF) is likely underdiagnosed in Caribbean populations due to non-representative cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) variant screening panels, limited newborn screening programs, and structural healthcare barriers. Data from 2022 indicate substantial populations with European ancestry in Puerto Rico (1.4 M, 42.7%) and the Dominican Republic (1.4 M, 57.9%), yet the true burden of CF in the broader Caribbean remains largely undocumented. WORKING HYPOTHESIS: Current diagnostic frameworks, largely based on European-derived CFTR variant distribu

Rubella elimination and improving health care for women.

In the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization supports strategies for the appropriate control and elimination of vaccine-preventable diseases, especially if the strategies are designed to reduce health inequities, strengthen the political commitment for immunization services, and promote the culture of prevention. In September 2003, the 44th Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization adopted a goal to eliminate rubella and congenital rubella syndrome by 2010. One of the main objectives of this initiative is improving women's health, consistent with achieving the Millenni

Schistosome infectivity in the snail, Biomphalaria glabrata, is partially dependent on the expression of Grctm6, a Guadeloupe Resistance Complex protein.

Schistosomiasis is one of the most important neglected tropical diseases. Despite effective chemotherapeutic treatments, this disease continues to afflict hundreds of millions of people. Understanding the natural intermediate snail hosts of schistosome parasites is vital to the suppression of this disease. A recently identified genomic region in Caribbean Biomphalaria glabrata snails strongly influences their resistance to infection by Schistosoma mansoni. This region contains novel genes having structural similarity to known pathogen recognition proteins. Here we elaborate on the probable str

A nasopalatine cyst in an 8-year-old child.

The nasopalatine cyst (NPC) was first described in 1914 and it is considered the most common non-odontogenic cyst. Most studies show a higher incidence of NPC among males than females, with a male/female ratio of 1.7:1. The majority of the cases described in people in their fifth decade involve Afro-Caribbeans, while those in their sixth decade are mainly caucasians. These cysts are normally asymptomatic, unless they are infected. The most commonly reported clinical symptom is swelling in the anterior part of the palate. The treatment of choice is enucleation. Even though it has been stated th
