An understanding of the taxonomic status and vector distribution of anophelines is crucial in controlling malaria. Previous phylogenetic analyses have supported the description of six species of the Neotropical malaria vector Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) albitarsis s.l. (Diptera: Culicidae): An. albitarsis, Anopheles deaneorum, Anopheles marajoara, Anopheles oryzalimnetes, Anopheles janconnae and An. albitarsis F. To evaluate the taxonomic status of An. albitarsis s.l. mosquitoes collected in various localities in the Colombian Caribbean region, specimens were analyzed using the complete mitochon

The Caribbean region is prone to the strong winds and low air pressures of tropical cyclones and their corresponding storm surge that driving coastal flooding. To protect coastal communities from the impacts of tropical cyclones, it is important to understand how this impact of tropical cyclones might change towards the future. This study applies the storyline approach to show what tropical cyclones Maria (2017) and Dorian (2019) could look like in a 2 °C and 3.4 °C warmer future climate. These two possible future climates are simulated with a high-resolution regional climate model using the p

Child and adolescent sexual abuse (CSA) is an important global health problem, especially in non-Western low- and middle-income countries. A number of studies have indicated that, in Latin American countries, male CSA is phenomenon of great concern. However, research on this topic is seriously lacking, and more specifically, on male-on-male CSA. We carried out a qualitative and quantitative secondary analysis of 680 cases of alleged male-on-male CSA that occurred between the years 2017 and 2018 in the Caribbean Region of Colombia. We analyzed the contents of forensic interviews with the allege

BACKGROUND: Timely diagnosis, treatment, and delays in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) remain underexplored in the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) region. The objective was to describe and analyze patient-level and health care system-level barriers and facilitators associated with diagnostic and therapeutic delays in SLE, based on experiences of patients and rheumatologists from 6 countries in the CAC region.
METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Patients and rheumatologists were purposively recruited. Da

Mangroves develop under environmental conditions and anthropogenic pressures whose impact on benthic meiofauna remains poorly understood. It is unclear how meiofauna communities are structured according to local sedimentary conditions. This study was designed to characterize the community structure of meiofauna and nematodes (dominant taxa) and the associated environmental forcings in intertidal mangrove sediments from Mayotte (Indo-West-Pacific), Martinique and Guadeloupe (Caribbean). Sediment cores were sampled at the end of the dry season at low tide on adult mangrove stands with similar im

Coxiella burnetii is a ubiquitous zoonotic bacterium reported worldwide that causes Q-fever. Infections result in profound economic losses to livestock producers by causing abortions and low birth weights. Current information about the disease in the Caribbean region is scarce. With multiple small islands and territories, it is often considered that the bacterium is absent or circulates at a low prevalence. Our study aimed to determine whether sheep and cattle housed at a veterinary campus in St Kitts had previous exposure to C. burnetii. Blood samples were taken from cattle (n = 63; 72% of th

Chagas disease (CD) is a zoonosis caused by the hemoflagellate Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted by insects of the subfamily Triatominae. Studies to identify the vectors involved in the transmission of T. cruzi have been conducted in the Caribbean regions of Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama. However, retrospective studies and comprehensive reviews covering these three countries are still lacking, limiting our understanding of this issue. This study used the PRISMA method to conduct a systematic review of studies on the triatomine fauna and its natural infection by T. cruzi in the Caribbea

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: In England, people of Black Caribbean (BC) ethnicity are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but it is unclear whether this varies by their region of birth.
AIM(S)/OBJECTIVES: To examine differences in STI diagnoses among UK- and Caribbean-born BC people.
METHODS: Data on STI diagnoses in BC people attending specialist sexual health services (SHSs) during 2015 and living in England were obtained from the GUMCAD STI surveillance system, the national surveillance system for STIs in England. Associations between being UK- or Caribbean-

BACKGROUND: In 2012 the World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA65.21 on elimination of schistosomiasis, calling for increased investment in schistosomiasis control and support for countries to initiate elimination programs. This study aims to analyze prevalence and intensity of Schistosoma mansoni infection in children in Latin America and the Caribbean countries and territories (LAC), at the second administrative level or lower.
METHODOLOGY: A systematic review of schistosomiasis prevalence and intensity of infection was conducted by searching at PubMed, LILACS and EMBASE. Experts on th

BACKGROUND: Although many studies have highlighted better pregnancy and birth outcomes among foreign-born Latinas than among U.S.-born people, few have assessed heterogeneity in outcomes disaggregated by region of origin. We examined adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes among birthing people born in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) compared to people born in the U.S.
METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort from the Study of Outcomes in Mothers and Infants compiled from California births (2007-2020). We examined descriptive statistics, unadjusted, and adjusted odds ratios for the associat

Protein composition, toxicity, and neutralization of the venoms of Micrurus alleni and Micrurus mosquitensis, two sympatric monadal coral snakes found in humid environments of the Caribbean region of Costa Rica, were studied. Proteomic profiling revealed that these venoms display highly divergent compositions: the former dominated by three-finger toxins (3FTx) and the latter by phospholipases A2 (PLA2). Protein family abundances correlated with enzymatic and toxic characteristics of the venoms. Selective inhibition experiments showed that PLA2s play only a marginal role in the lethal effect of

Adult T-cell leukaemia is the first blood disease caused by a retrovirus: HTLV-1. The authors report the first French series of 15 patients, of whom 9 came from the classical endemic areas--the Antilles and outer Caribbean Islands--and 6 from Africa where the serological prevalence of HTLV-1 is high but few cases of adult T-cell leukaemia have been reported. Emphasis is laid on the importance of immunodeficiency (refractory strongyloidiasis, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, polyclonal B lymphoproliferative syndrome) and of other pathologies associated with the retrovirus (polyarthritis, lymphoc

This commentary examines the serious implications of the United States’ (US) decision to withdraw funding from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) system for maternal and child health and nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The region has made significant progress in reducing maternal and infant mortality through coordinated efforts led by WHO, PAHO, and other UN agencies, as an example, infant mortality decrease in LAC by 67% between 1990 and 2015. However, many countries, particularly low-income countries and small island nations, remain highly dep

BACKGROUND: The use of extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) increases for patients with refractory cardiac and/or respiratory failure. To ensure broader access to this life-saving therapy, regional ECMO networks have been developed worldwide, enabling the transfer of patients supported with ECMO to specialized referral centers. At the University Hospital of Martinique, a Mobile Circulatory Support Unit provides 24 h/7 coverage for inter-hospital aeromedical transport of patients receiving ECMO across the French Departments of the America and to mainland France. This study aimed to descri

We report the first documented occurrence of an outbreak of trichomonosis in a free-ranging small flock of Eurasian collared doves (Streptopelia decaocto) and African collared dove hybrids (Streptopelia risoria) in the Caribbean. In total, 18 birds were examined, including six African collared dove x Eurasian collared dove hybrids and 12 Eurasian collared doves. The affected age class consisted of adults. Sex distribution was equal. With a flock population size of 200 birds, mortality rate for the outbreak was estimated at 15-20%. Living birds were weak, showing evidence of mucus-stained beaks

AIM: To determine the likelihood of an individual developing psoriatic arthritis (PsA) if they have a relative diagnosed with this disease, and to compare rates among different ethnic groups living in the same geographic region.
METHOD: Family histories of patients with PsA were assessed using a semi-structured questionnaire.
RESULTS: Data on family members of patients with SpA were collected for 151 patients (46.6%) of the total cohort of 324. A total of 146 patients in the SpA cohort had PsA (45%) and 88 of these patients (60.2%) also had relatives with PsA. Psoriatic arthritis was seen mo

BACKGROUND: High-level antibiotic consumption plays a critical role in the selection and spread of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) in the ICU. Implementation of a stewardship program including a restrictive antibiotic policy was evaluated with respect to ESBL-E acquisition (carriage and infection).
METHODS: We implemented a 2-year, before-and-after intervention study including all consecutive adult patients admitted for > 48 h in the medical-surgical 26-bed ICU of Guadeloupe University Hospital (French West Indies). A conventional strategy period (CSP) i
