The DMPA secreted by the pitcher of Nepenthes × ventrata demonstrates insecticidal activity against a range of insect pests.

The prolonged use of traditional chemical pesticides has led to the emergence of resistance in pest populations, and the discovery of bioactive compounds with novel insecticidal mechanisms offers a promising strategy to broaden the current repertoire of pest management approaches. Natural compounds derived from plants constitute a vast resource for the development of novel pesticides. As a carnivorous plant, Nepenthes × ventrata is capable of secreting a diverse array of compounds that serve to attract and digest insects. In this study, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by N. × ven

The Placebo Project: An observational study and comprehensive analysis of 134 commonly prescribed homeopathic remedies in India uncovers potential for hepatotoxicity.

Homeopathy is a popular alternative medical practice globally. However, homeopathic formulations can cause allergies, anaphylaxis, fatal cardiovascular events, kidney injury, liver failure, and death due to their direct and indirect toxicities. This study examined commonly prescribed homeopathic formulations from 3 categories: classical dilutions, mother tinctures, and proprietary products. This cross-sectional study assessed the quality and safety of popular over-the-counter homeopathic formulations. Each remedy underwent complete organic and inorganic content profiling, including heavy metal

Addressing proteolytic efficiency in enzymatic degradation therapy for celiac disease.

Celiac disease is triggered by partially digested gluten proteins. Enzyme therapies that complete protein digestion in vivo could support a gluten-free diet, but the barrier to completeness is high. Current options require enzyme amounts on the same order as the protein meal itself. In this study, we evaluated proteolytic components of the carnivorous pitcher plant (Nepenthes spp.) for use in this context. Remarkably low doses enhance gliadin solubilization rates, and degrade gliadin slurries within the pH and temporal constraints of human gastric digestion. Potencies in excess of 1200:1 (subs

Rapid riparian ecosystem recovery in low-latitudinal North China following the end-Permian mass extinction.

The greatest mass extinction at the end of the Permian, ca. 252 million years ago, led to a tropical dead zone on land and sea. The speed of recovery of life has been debated, whether fast or slow, and terrestrial ecosystems are much less understood than marine. Here, we show fast reestablishment of riparian ecosystems in low-latitude North China as little as ~2 million years after the end-Permian mass extinction. The initial ichnoassemblages in shallow lacustrine and fluvial facies of late Smithian age are monospecific, devoid of infaunalization, with apparent size reduction. In the following

An invasive vector of zoonotic disease sustained by anthropogenic resources: the raccoon dog in northern Europe.

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is an introduced species in Europe with a continually expanding range. Since the species is capable of affecting local ecosystems and is a vector for a number of severe zoonotic diseases, it is important to understand its food habits. Raccoon dog diet was studied in Estonia by examining the contents of 223 stomach samples collected during the coldest period of the year, August to March, in 2010-2012. The most frequently consumed food categories were anthropogenic plants (e.g. cereals, fruits; FO = 56.1%) and carrion (e.g. carcasses of artiodactyls and

Biomass transformation webs provide a unified approach to consumer-resource modelling.

An approach to modelling food web biomass flows among live and dead compartments within and among species is formulated using metaphysiological principles that characterise population growth in terms of basal metabolism, feeding, senescence and exploitation. This leads to a unified approach to modelling interactions among plants, herbivores, carnivores, scavengers, parasites and their resources. Also, dichotomising sessile miners from mobile gatherers of resources, with relevance to feeding and starvation time scales, suggests a new classification scheme involving 10 primary categories of cons

Nitric oxide action in the digestive fluid of Nepenthes × ventrata is linked to the modulation of ROS level.

Nepenthes are carnivorous plants with photoactive leaves converted into jug-shaped containers filled with the digestive fluid. The digestion requires various enzymes and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that facilitate proteolysis. Reactive nitrogen species are present in the digestive fluid of Nepenthes × ventrata, and the increased nitric oxide (NO) formation is associated with protein degradation. The aim of the work was to verify the beneficial effect of NO application into the trap on the dynamics of protein digestion and ROS homeostasis. Measurements were done using the digestive fluid or t

Relationship between a plant-based 'vegan' pet food and clinical manifestation of multiple nutrient deficiencies in two cats.

A topical subject in human nutrition is the steadily growing number of people choosing to limit or completely avoid all animal-derived food products either for moral dilemma, health concerns or both. To meet people's will of applying their dietary choices to their domestic animals, the pet food industry answered by launching on the market some plant-based diets. This leads to concerns about whether these diets are adequately formulated to satisfy the target species nutritional requirements, especially for cats which are still considered strict carnivores. This case report follows a 2-year-old

Background activity concentrations of radionuclides and internal dose rates in the wild mouse and shrew mole in forests of Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, Japan.

Understanding baseline internal radiation exposure in small terrestrial mammals is essential for evaluating potential radiological impacts associated with nuclear facilities. We quantified naturally occurring and artificial radionuclides in two representative forest-dwelling species-the small Japanese field mouse (Apodemus argenteus) and the Japanese shrew mole (Urotrichus talpoides)-collected from three forest types in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, prior to the operation of a commercial spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. Activity concentrations of 14C, 40K, 210Po, 210Pb, 226Ra, 232T

Mucins and neuromodulators involved in mucus secretion in the alimentary canal of Siluriformes.

The morphological diversity of the fish alimentary canal depends on many factors, mainly the diet and phylogeny. We studied the relative densities of the diverse histochemical mucous cell populations in the epithelium of the alimentary canal of the black bullhead, Ameiurus melas, and the wels catfish, Silurus glanis. The classical histochemical protocols indicated a comparable pattern of mucous cells between the two species, with predominant mixed mucins in the esophagus, neutral mucins in the stomach, and acidic mucins in the intestine. Moreover, mucous cell types were characterized by the ap

Necrotic dermatitis in waterfowl associated with consumption of perennial rye grass (Lolium perenne).

Mute swans (Cygnus olor), whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus), and mixed-breed domestic geese (Anser anser domesticus) were presented for necrotic lesions on the feet, eyelids, and beak. Individuals from the same collection of birds had developed identical lesions during March-September of each of the previous 3 years. Vesicular and necrotic dermatitis involved only nonfeathered and nonpigmented areas of the integument. No abnormal clinical signs were seen on either carnivorous species or birds with pigmented skin from the same collection. The enclosure that housed the birds had been planted with pe

Development of microalgae communities in the Phytotelmata of allochthonous populations of Sarracenia purpurea (Sarraceniaceae).

The phytotelmata of the North American pitcher plant Sarracenia purpurea are colonised by a great variety of aquatic organisms and, thus, provide an ideal model to study trophic interactions in small freshwater ecosystems. Although algae are discussed as a potential food source for predators, little is known about the structure of algae coenoses in pitchers of S. purpurea. This study aims to elucidate temporal shifts in the algae community structure in pitchers of an allochthonous population of S. purpurea in Saxony, Germany. A total of 78 algae taxa was found in the pitchers. Mean algae abund

From chronic feed-induced intestinal inflammation to adenocarcinoma with metastases in salmonid fish.

Neoplasms in fish normally show poor abilities for metastasis, and there are no reports on intestinal cancer with metastasis to other organs. In aquaculture production, carnivorous salmonids in Northern Europe receive commercial feeds with plant ingredients. Such contents have been shown to cause chronic intestinal inflammation. Inflammation provokes carcinogenesis in the human gut, and here, we report a similar pathologic progression in salmonids. Nine commercially farmed groups of Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout (n = 39,160) and one experimental positive group (n = 789) fed the same commer

The Venus Flytrap Dionaea muscipula Counts Prey-Induced Action Potentials to Induce Sodium Uptake.

Carnivorous plants, such as the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), depend on an animal diet when grown in nutrient-poor soils. When an insect visits the trap and tilts the mechanosensors on the inner surface, action potentials (APs) are fired. After a moving object elicits two APs, the trap snaps shut, encaging the victim. Panicking preys repeatedly touch the trigger hairs over the subsequent hours, leading to a hermetically closed trap, which via the gland-based endocrine system is flooded by a prey-decomposing acidic enzyme cocktail. Here, we asked the question as to how many times trigger h

Evaluating total mercury and methylmercury biomagnification using stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in fish from the Madeira River basin, Brazilian Amazon.

The isotopic signatures of carbon in primary consumer fish species in the Madeira River basin (Western Amazon) follow a pattern, with basal species feeding mainly on C3 (e.g., vascular plants and phytoplankton). In this study with 196 specimens of 19 fish species and six trophic guilds, significant differences were found between the two main groups of primary consumers (herbivores and detritivores) in the Madeira River basin. The mercury and δ15N data indicated that the fish specimens collected in Puruzinho and Cuniã Lakes provided greater trophic magnification factors (TMFs) for this metal th

The protein paradox, carnivore diet & hypertrophy versus longevity. Short term nutrition and hypertrophy versus longevity.

Meat consumption has been a common food selection for humans for millennia. Meat is rich in amino acids, delivers vast amounts of nutrients and assists in short term health and hypertrophy. However, meat consumption can induce the activation of mTOR and IGF-1, accelerated aging, vascular constriction, atherosclerosis, heart disease, increased risk of diabetes, systemic inflammatory effects, cancers (including colorectal and prostate cancers), advanced glycation end products, impaired immune function / increased susceptibility to infection via downstream advanced glycation end product accumulat

Zearalenone applied per os provides adverse effects in structure of chosen parts of bitch reproductive system.

Both earlier investigations and complete formulas of pet food for dogs show that professionally prepared pet food is based in 30% on the material of the plant origin. Our own investigations prove that animal feeding stuffs of the plant origin are very often vectors of many undesirable substances (including micotoxins) that are unfavourable for carnivores. Zearalenone is a micotoxin, which frequently occurs among them. It was revealed in pet food in quantities from 5.0-299.5 microg/kg. It is a very dangerous xenobiotic because of its quick and easy absorption in the organism after per os applic

Primary hyperoxaluria type 1 in Japan.

Glyoxylate is an immediate precursor of oxalate, but in its metabolism the conversion into glycine catalyzed by serine:pyruvate/alanine:glyoxylate aminotransferase (SPT/AGT) appears to be the main route. When SPT/AGT is missing as in the case of primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1) more glyoxylate is used for the oxalate production, resulting in calcium oxalate urolithiasis and finally systemic oxalosis. SPT/AGT is a unique enzyme of species-specific dual organelle localization; it is located largely in mitochondria in carnivores and entirely in peroxisomes in herbivores and man. For herbivores,

Hepatic Glucose Metabolism and Its Disorders in Fish.

Carbohydrate, which is the most abundant nutrient in plant-sourced feedstuffs, is an economically indispensable component in commercial compound feeds for fish. This nutrient can enhance the physical quality of diets and allow for pellet expansion during extrusion. There is compelling evidence that an excess dietary intake of starch causes hepatic disorders, thereby further reducing the overall food consumption and growth performance of fish species. Among the severe metabolic disturbances are glycogenic hepatopathy (hepatomegaly caused by the excessive accumulation of glycogen in hepatocytes)
