Laser surface modification of decellularized extracellular cartilage matrix for cartilage tissue engineering.

The implantation of autologous cartilage as the gold standard operative procedure for the reconstruction of cartilage defects in the head and neck region unfortunately implicates a variety of negative effects at the donor site. Tissue-engineered cartilage appears to be a promising alternative. However, due to the complex requirements, the optimal material is yet to be determined. As demonstrated previously, decellularized porcine cartilage (DECM) might be a good option to engineer vital cartilage. As the dense structure of DECM limits cellular infiltration, we investigated surface modification

Cartilage Z plasty on lateral crus for treatment of alar cartilage malposition.

BACKGROUND: Alar cartilage malposition is an anatomical variation. Axis of the lateral crus lies cephalically and can be parallel to the cephalic septum. The characterised findings of the malposition are broad and bulbous nasal tip, abnormal lateral crural axes, long alar creases that extend to the nostril rims, alar wall hollows, frequent nostril deformities and associated external valvular incompetence. This article presents a new technique for the repositioning of the lateral crus in this article. METHODS: Open rhinoplasty was conducted. A cartilage Z plasty was performed on the lateral cr

Lateral division of the rabbit cricoid cartilage: its effect on cartilage growth.

Laryngotracheoplasty often includes bilateral lateral division of the cricoid cartilage, despite the theoretical risk that cartilage growth centers might be located in the lateral cricoid. To investigate the effect of lateral cricoid cartilage division on subsequent cartilage growth, 60 five-week-old New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four groups of 15 animals each. Group I was comprised of unoperated controls. The remaining animals underwent anterior (group II), anterior and posterior (group III), and anterior, posterior, and bilateral lateral (group IV) division of the cricoid carti

Chondrosarcoma of the Thyroid Cartilage Successfully Treated With Partial Resection of the Thyroid Cartilage.

Chondrosarcoma of the thyroid cartilage is a sporadic disease with nonspecific clinical presentation. Smooth swelling of the supraglottic area should arouse suspicion of possible pathology. In addition to laryngoceles, which usually do not have a significant impact, otolaryngologists should consider chondrosarcoma of the thyroid cartilage and indicate computed tomography (CT). Late diagnosis leads to worse prognosis, particularly worse voice after more extensive surgery, need for tracheostomy, and worse survival from higher degree chondrosarcomas.

[Use of the alar cartilage in repairing of defects of the cartilage part of the dorsum nasi].

The authors present long-term results of using costal and alar allo-cartilages for repairing defects of the cartilage part of nasal ridge. Transplantation of the costal allo-cartilage to 362 patients entailed cartilage deformations in 50, inflammation in 34 and resolution of the cartilage in 26 patients. Transplantation of alar cartilage brought resolution and deformation in 10 and 7 cases of 276 transplantations, respectively, in the absence of inflammation. Moreover, the latter material provides better cosmetic results.

Cartilage Homeostasis and Osteoarthritis.

Healthy limb joints are important for maintaining health and attaining longevity. Endochondral ossification (the replacement of cartilage with bone, occurring during skeletal development) is essential for bone formation, especially in long-axis bones. In contrast to endochondral ossification, chondrocyte populations in articular cartilage persist and maintain joint tissue into adulthood. Articular cartilage, a connective tissue consisting of chondrocytes and their surrounding extracellular matrices, plays an essential role in the mechanical cushioning of joints in postnatal locomotion. Osteoar

Microfracture of Articular Cartilage.

Microfracture is a treatment option for symptomatic, full-thickness cartilage defects. Microfracture is most likely to be successful when performed in nonobese patients under the age of thirty years for small (<2 to 4-cm2) femoral condylar defects that have been symptomatic for a short time (less than twelve to twenty-four months). Microfracture has acceptable short-term clinical results, but results can be expected to decline over time. Long-term studies that compare microfracture with advanced cartilage restoration techniques are required to ascertain whether these newer techniques provide l

Imaging of articular cartilage.

We tried to review the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in understanding microscopic and morphologic structure of the articular cartilage. The optimal protocols and available spin-echo sequences in present day practice are reviewed in context of common pathologies of articular cartilage. The future trends of articular cartilage imaging have been discussed with their appropriateness. In diarthrodial joints of the body, articular cartilage is functionally very important. It is frequently exposed to trauma, degeneration, and repetitive wear and tear. MRI has played a vital role in evaluat

Cartilage viability after trochleoplasty.

Trochleoplasty is an established and accepted technique for the treatment of patellar instability because of a missing trochlear groove. In this technique, a flap of cartilage over the trochlea is carefully removed and a new trochlear groove is created in the underlying bone before the cartilaginous flap is reattached with sutures. The mid-term clinical and radiological results of this operation are promising but no information about the viability of the reattached cartilage has been reported. To evaluate cartilage viability and quality after trochleoplasty and to verify the healing process, t

[Meniscus and cartilage damage].

It is well accepted that those meniscus lesions causing an internal derangement of the knee joint lead to chondromalacia. An operation is necessary to prevent progressive condylar cartilage damage. Menisci with minor traumatic tears and mild degeneration protect the joint surface. A removal is rarely indicated. The complete meniscectomy leads to a degenerative arthrosis and should be avoided. Partial meniscus removal minimizes subsequent degenerative changes.
