Rhein is used as an active ingredient in laxatives in medicinal herbal products and is a chemical marker for quality control purposes. Thus, a simple and effective method for the optimized extraction of a high amount of rhein from the fruit pulp of Cassia fistula was investigated using ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE). The response surface methodology was applied to find the most suitable parameters for optimizing the extraction process and to study the factors' relationships with each other. The best conditions for ultrasonic extraction were the application of 1:40 g/mL solid-to-liquid ra

Cassia seed is an edible and medicinal plant, and cassia seed polysaccharides (CSP) are its important active components, which have attracted considerable attention due to their diverse pharmacological activities and extensive application prospects. It demonstrates notable pharmacological effects, including antitumor, ocular protective effects, and wound-healing properties. Owing to its dual status as both a medicine and food, CSP serves as a natural thickener and functional food ingredient. Structurally, CSP are predominantly galactomannans, which underpin their industrial utility. Furthermor

Cassia occidentalis toxicity is thought to be uncommon; however, several cases have been described with acute hepatomyoencephalopathy with a high-mortality rate. We report a previously healthy, 2-year-old girl who developed acute liver failure after fresh seed ingestion. Without a specific antidote, we decided to implement supportive measures and medications including lactulose, sodium benzoate and N-acetylcysteine. The patient also experienced with cardiogenic shock and transient distal renal tubular acidosis, which were all spontaneously resolved. The liver chemistries returned to normal 3 m

In this study, Californian-style black table olives were enriched with fresh and lyophilized "Carao" (Cassia grandis L.) to enhance their mineral composition, antioxidant activity, phenolic compound content, and to evaluate their potential for reducing acrylamide levels. Mineral concentrations were quantified using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The addition of both fresh and lyophilized "Carao" significantly increased the iron concentration in the olives. Additionally, levels of calcium, magnesium, and potassium were elevated in both "Carao" treatments. Am

Functional oligosaccharides show anti-diabetic effects through inflammation regulation with improved glucose metabolism. In this study, novel prebiotics of manno-oligosaccharides from cassia seed gum (CMOS) were incorporated into the diet of streptozotocin (STZ) plus high-fat and high-sugar diet (HFSD)-induced rats. After feeding for 8 weeks, CMOS (300-1200 mg per kg b.w. per d) significantly ameliorated the fasting blood glucose level (7.1-8.2 mmol L-1) as compared with that of the model group (14.2 mmol L-1), where the area under the oral glucose tolerance test curve was decreased by 20.0%-2
