Bioefficacy of ursolic acid and its derivatives isolated from Catharanthus roseus (L) G. Don leaf against Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Anopheles stephensi larvae.

The aim of the present study was to identify the active principle from Catharanthus roseus leaf using larvicidal bioassay against three mosquito species viz. Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Anopheles stephensi. Preliminary studies of the three successive extracts such as hexane, chloroform, and methanol against Ae. aegypti larvae showed that the chloroform extract was more active with LC50 and LC90 values of 40.09 ppm and 189.15 ppm respectively. Bioassay guided fractionation of the active chloroform extract resulted in the isolation of a triterpenoid (ursolic acid) as the active co

Antibiofilm Activity of Azadirachta indica and Catharanthus roseus and Their Synergistic Effects in Combination with Antimicrobial Agents against Fluconazole-Resistant Candida albicans Strains and MRSA.

The rapid emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance has become a global public health concern that threatens the effective treatment of infectious diseases. One major approach adopted to overcome antimicrobial resistance is the use of plant extracts individually and/or with combination of antibiotics with plant extracts, which may lead to new ways of treating infectious diseases and essentially representing a potential area for further future investigations. In this study, the antifungal activities of Azadirachta indica leaf and Catharanthus roseus flower extracts against fluconazole-re

Antimicrobial activity of selected plants against fungal species isolated from South African AIDS patients and their antigonococcal activity.

Background Sexually transmitted infections continue to be a major health concern in sub-Saharan Africa where antimicrobial drugs are becoming ineffective due to increasing resistance. Many healthcare seekers in lower socio-economic settings depend on invasive alien plants administered by traditional health practitioners to treat sexually transmitted infections. Methods Roots of selected plants were analysed for phytoconstituents using standard methods. Both the disc diffusion model and microdilution technique were used to determine the inhibition zone and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)

Opium poppy and Madagascar periwinkle: model non-model systems to investigate alkaloid biosynthesis in plants.

Alkaloids represent a large and diverse group of compounds that are related by the occurrence of a nitrogen atom within a heterocyclic backbone. Unlike other types of secondary metabolites, the various structural categories of alkaloids are unrelated in terms of biosynthesis and evolution. Although the biology of each group is unique, common patterns have become apparent. Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), which produces several benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, and Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus), which accumulates an array of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids, have emerged as the premier

In vivo and real-time monitoring of secondary metabolites of living organisms by mass spectrometry.

Secondary metabolites are compounds that are important for the survival and propagation of animals and plants. Our current understanding on the roles and secretion mechanism of secondary metabolites is limited by the existing techniques that typically cannot provide transient and dynamic information about the metabolic processes. In this manuscript, by detecting venoms secreted by living scorpion and toad upon attack and variation of alkaloids in living Catharanthus roseus upon stimulation, which represent three different sampling methods for living organisms, we demonstrated that in vivo and

Studies on plant-mediated fate of the explosives RDX and HMX.

The fate of the explosives RDX and HMX on exposure to plants was investigated in 'natural' aquatic systems of Myriophyllum aquaticum for 16 days, and in axenic hairy root cultures of Catharanthus roseus for > or = 9 weeks. Exposure levels were: HMX, 5 mg/l; and RDX, approximately 8 mg/l. Exposure outcomes observed include: HMX, no transformation by aquatic plants, and minimal biological activity by axenic roots; and RDX, removal by both plant systems. In the case of RDX exposure to axenic roots, since 14C-RDX was included, removal was confirmed by the accumulation of 14C-label in the biomass.

The in vitro antimycotic activity of the leaf extract of Catharanthus roseus, Lantana camara, Nerium indicum, Sida cordifolia, and Ziziphus mauritiana was studied against M. circinelloides. This fungal species causes mucormycosis (black fungus). Presently, mucormycosis is affecting COVID patients due to prolonged use of steroids. So, it is needed to require development of more effective and less toxic antimycotic agents for the treatment of mucormycosis. Plants and their extraction preparations have been used as medicine against infectious disease. In this research, aqueous, ethanol, and DMSO

Selective α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of (+)-eupenoxide and 3-ketone derivatives produced by the endophytic fungus of Aspergillus sp.

α-Glucosidase and α-amylase are two important glycosidases involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Inhibitors of these enzymes are considered crucial therapeutic agents for carbohydrate absorption disorders such as diabetes and obesity. However, the inhibition of salivary amylase can result in undigested starch reaching the stomach, causing indigestion and potentially leading to gastric and duodenal ulcers as well as gastritis. Selective inhibitors that possess α-glucosidase inhibitory activity without affecting α-amylase are needed to address this issue. It has been revealed that (+)-eupenoxide

Isolation, characterization and chromatography based purification of antibacterial compound isolated from rare endophytic actinomycetes Micrococcus yunnanensis.

Endophytic actinomycetes are considered as one of the relatively unexplored potential sources in search of antibiotic producer against antibiotic resistant pathogens. A potent strain isolated from Catharanthus roseus that displays antibacterial potential against antibiotic resistant human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus was characterized and designated as Micrococcus yunnanensis strain rsk5. Rsk5 is capable of producing optimum antibacterial metabolites on starch casein medium at 30 °C, pH 5 and 2% NaCl condition. The crude antibacterial agent was extracted from fermentation broth by ethyl acet

Potent SARS-CoV-2 3C-like protease inhibitor ( +)-eupenoxide-3,6-diketone (IC50: 0.048 μM) was synthesized based on ( +)-eupenoxide; lead from ( +)-eupenoxide analogs study by endophytic fermentation.

Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, research has been conducted on treatment and countermeasures against the causative severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the development of new seeds is urgently needed because viruses have the characteristic of becoming resistant through mutation. We hypothesize that endophytes produce antiviral substances to combat foreign viruses in host plants. According to this hypothesis, the seeds of therapeutic agents for infectious diseases could be obtained from endophytes by culture experiments. This report foun

Phytomedicine versus gonorrhoea: the Bapedi experience.

Records regarding the phytomedicine employed by the Bapedi are almost non-existent. This is the first study of herbal remedies used by Bapedi traditional healers to treat gonorrhoea, of concern as it is a danger to reproductive health. A semi-structured questionnaire, centred on sexual health, was administered to 30 traditional healers in 15 local municipalities across the three districts of Limpopo Province during 2009/10. The questionnaire focussed on the use of plants for medicine as well their application in reproductive health management. This investigation found that the Bapedi employed

Pectin Structural Dynamics: Developmental and Evolutionary Perspectives.

Plant cell walls play a crucial role in plant development and evolution. This structure is primarily composed of proteins and polysaccharides, including cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectins. Homogalacturonan (HG), the most abundant pectin in the primary cell wall, is synthesized by α -1,4-D-GALACTURONOSYLTRANSFERASE (GAUT) enzymes, methylesterified, and subsequently secreted into the apoplast. The dynamics of pectin methylesterification is regulated by enzymes such as PECTIN METHYLESTERASES (PMEs) and PECTIN METHYLESTERASE INHIBITORS (PMEIs). Across plant evolution and development, different
