[Foot-and-mouth disease of cattle is not a zoonosis].

In 1997 there was an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) among cattle in Turkey. People visiting that country were warned against importing animal products into the Netherlands. This had nothing to do with hazards to human health, as FMD virus is not a zoonotic virus, but with the risk of spread of the disease to livestock in the Netherlands, notably to cattle and pigs. A disease with similar clinical symptoms in pigs is swine vesicular disease (SVD), which is not a zoonosis either. FMD virus is an aphtovirus, SVD virus is an enterovirus. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease in humans is caused by

A perspective on respiratory disease in feedlot cattle.

The etiological factors causing acute pneumonia in feedlot cattle are complex in terms of their interactions with the host to cause clinical disease or death. The most significant agent is Pasteurella hemolytica, but it may be acting relatively late in the overall sequence of events. It is necessary to develop an overall strategy to determine the pathogenesis of the disease in the field. Approaches to this objective are discussed, with the emphasis on the role of the epidemiologist.

[Infection-limited disease factors in cattle].

The following infectious diseases of cattle can be included in the group of the so-called infectious 'factors disease': certain respiratory diseases, in particular enzootic bronchopneumonia (EBP, 'shipping fever'), trichophytia, some parasitic skin diseases and internal parasitoses, certain types of calf enteritis, special forms of mastitis and of genital infections and possibly others. As is discussed in the paper EBP is a typical multifactorial infectious disease in cattle. The role of Pasteurella spp. in the pathogenesis of EBP is shown on the basis of recent investigations in young beef ca

Tick-borne parasitic diseases in cattle: current knowledge and prospective risk analysis related to the ongoing evolution in French cattle farming systems.

Parasitic diseases, like babesiosis and theileriosis are transmitted by ticks: their occurrence is therefore linked to the size of the tick stock and the seasonality of the vectors. Babesia divergens bovine babesiosis transmitted by Ixodes ricinus is widespread and often reported in France. Serological prevalence is high, ranging from 20 to 80% according to the farms. Clinical incidence is low: around 0.4% for the whole cattle population. The endemic situation is unstable and clinical cases occur more frequently with farming system modifications. L. ricinus is a tick essentially found in woodl

Predictive models for early lactation diseases in transition dairy cattle at dry-off.

During the transition period, dairy cattle undergo tremendous metabolic and physiological changes to prepare for milk synthesis and secretion. Failure to sufficiently regulate these changes may lead to metabolic stress, which increases risk of transition diseases. Metabolic stress is defined as a physiological state consisting of 3 components: aberrant nutrient metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Current monitoring methods to detect cows experiencing metabolic stress involve measuring biomarkers for nutrient metabolism. However, these biomarkers, including non-esterified fatty acid

Use of antimicrobials in the treatment of reproductive diseases in cattle and horses.

Use of antimicrobials for veterinary indications related to reproduction in cattle and horses is reviewed. Antimicrobial compounds are widely used to treat and prevent infections of reproductive organs. Total amounts of antimicrobials for such purposes, estimated by weight, are low compared with major uses in food animals. The most common reproduction-related indication in cattle is mastitis. The number of intramammary products available for treatment of mastitis in the European Union is high. Metritis and endometritis also require antimicrobial treatment of cattle and specific products for in

Neurological diseases of ruminant livestock in Australia. V: congenital neurogenetic disorders of cattle.

As part of a series on neurological disorders in ruminant livestock in Australia, this review focuses on the congenital neurogenic disorders of cattle. The genetic pressures that contribute to the emergence of congenital neurogenic disorders, as well as the methods of diagnosis, are discussed. Disorders reviewed are ordered by breed and include arthrogryposis multiplex, fawn calf syndrome, inherited congenital myoclonus and maple syrup urine disease.

Prevalence and spatial distribution of infectious diseases of dairy cattle in Ontario, Canada.

We investigated the prevalence and spatial distribution of selected pathogens associated with infectious diseases of dairy cattle in Ontario, Canada. The cross-sectional study surveyed bulk tank milk for antibodies against bovine leukemia virus (BLV), Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP), and Salmonella Dublin, and for the presence of mastitis pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Mycoplasma bovis). Between October 2021 and June 2022, bulk tank milk samples were obtained from every commercial dairy farm in Ontario (n = 3,286). Samples underwent ELISA testing fo

Genomic Association between SNP Markers and Diseases in the "Curraleiro Pé-Duro" Cattle.

Susceptibility to diseases is inherited and can be transmitted between populations. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) in genes related to immune response is associated with diseases in cattle. This study investigated SNPs in the genomic region of cytokines in 702 samples of Curraleiro Pé-Duro cattle and associated them with the occurrence of antibodies in brucellosis, leptospirosis, neosporosis, leukosis, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), and bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) tests. DNA samples were evaluated by the kompetitive allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (KASP) method to id

Tick-borne diseases in cattle: applications of proteomics to develop new generation vaccines.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) affect 80% of the world's cattle population, hampering livestock production throughout the world. Livestock industry is important to rural populations not only as food supply, but also as a source of income. Tick control is usually achieved by using acaricides which are expensive, deleterious to the environment and can induce chemical resistance of vectors; the development of more effective and sustainable control methods is therefore required. Theileriosis, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and heartwater are the most important TBDs in cattle. Immunization strategies are cur

Estimated direct economic costs associated with tick-borne diseases on cattle in Tanzania.

Tick-borne diseases, namely, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, cowdriosis and theileriosis, constrain cattle production and improvement in Tanzania, leading to considerable economic losses. A simple spreadsheet model was used to estimate the economic losses resulting from production losses, treatment and control costs associated with tick-borne diseases (TBD) in Tanzania. Model parameters included the national cattle population, reported TBD morbidity, fatality risk, and chemotherapy and control measures used. The total annual national loss due TBD was estimated to be 364 million USD, including an est

Effects of diseases on reproductive performance in Swedish Red and White dairy cattle.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of diseases on days open (DO), days to first breeding (DFB) and days from first breeding to conception (DFBC) using survival analysis models, and to assess the significance of the sire component and its possible confounding effect. The data consisted of a random sample of 20% of all herds enrolled in Swedish recording system and using 100% artificial insemination with at least 15 Swedish Red and White cows calving in 1991. The follow-up period was from 45 to 145 d after calving. After editing, the data sets had 23,927, 28,197, and 22,089

Tick-borne diseases of cattle in Paraguay. II. Immunisation against anaplasmosis and babesiosis.

A total of 102 susceptible adult Holstein Friesian cattle imported into an area of Paraguay where anaplasmosis and babesiosis are endemic were immunised by infection with Anaplasma centrale and attenuated forms of Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis obtained from Uruguay. The results indicated that the attenuated forms of both Babesia species protected cattle against heterologous field challenge whereas A. centrale did not invariably confer sufficient protection against a field challenge of A. marginale.
