Dynamic Changes of Cardiopulmonary-Cerebral Causality during Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

Cardiac arrest (CA) has a serious impact on human health. Quality assessment of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combined with feedback on physiological parameters is important in improving patients' survival and neurological prognosis after CA. Little is known how the cardiopulmonary-cerebral relationship changes during CPR. This study aimed to investigate the dynamic changes of cardiopulmonary-cerebral causality during CPR. Based on animal experiments, electrocardiography, end-tidal carbon dioxide and electroencephalogram were collected during CPR and were divided into Baseline, CA, CPR a

*Co-Occurrence and Causality Among ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dyscalculia.

ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia often co-occur, and the underlying continuous traits are correlated (ADHD symptoms, reading, spelling, and math skills). This may be explained by trait-to-trait causal effects, shared genetic and environmental factors, or both. We studied a sample of ≤ 19,125 twin children and 2,150 siblings from the Netherlands Twin Register, assessed at ages 7 and 10. Children with a condition, compared to those without that condition, were 2.1 to 3.1 times more likely to have a second condition. Still, most children (77.3%) with ADHD, dyslexia, or dyscalculia had just one con

Genetic overlap and causality between blood metabolites and migraine.

The availability of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for human blood metabolome provides an excellent opportunity for studying metabolism in a heritable disease such as migraine. Utilizing GWAS summary statistics, we conduct comprehensive pairwise genetic analyses to estimate polygenic genetic overlap and causality between 316 unique blood metabolite levels and migraine risk. We find significant genome-wide genetic overlap between migraine and 44 metabolites, mostly lipid and organic acid metabolic traits (FDR < 0.05). We also identify 36 metabolites, mostly related to lipoproteins, tha

Inferring Causality from Noninvasive Brain Stimulation in Cognitive Neuroscience.

Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation or transcranial direct and alternating current stimulation, are advocated as measures to enable causal inference in cognitive neuroscience experiments. Transcending the limitations of purely correlative neuroimaging measures and experimental sensory stimulation, they allow to experimentally manipulate brain activity and study its consequences for perception, cognition, and eventually, behavior. Although this is true in principle, particular caution is advised when interpreting brain stimulation experimen

Hemorrhagic stroke and COVID-19 infection: Coincidence or causality?

Amyloid Protein Precursor gene duplication is a rare cause of early-onset Alzheimer's disease that can be associated with Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy. This condition predisposes cerebrovascular events, specifically, intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke. This report describes a case of first-time intracerebral hemorrhage in a patient with APP gene duplication during SARS-CoV-2 infection, a typically pro-thrombotic and pro-inflammatory condition, as a possible trigger for this condition.

Cancer and implantable cardiac defibrillator. Causality, confusion or chance?

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) has been established as a therapy for malignant ventricular arrhythmias in patients at high risk of suffering them. Some studies suggest a possible relationship between the development of cancer and some prosthetic materials. Likewise, some investigations describe a higher incidence of cancer in patients with an ICD that suggest a potential relationship. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of patients that underwent implantation of an ICD in the Complejo Hospitalario de Navarra between 2000 and 2016. The follow-up finished i

Perceptual impressions of causality are affected by common fate.

Many studies of perceptual impressions of causality have used a stimulus in which a moving object (the launcher) contacts a stationary object (the target) and the latter then moves off. Such stimuli give rise to an impression that the launcher makes the target move. In the present experiments, instead of a single target object, an array of four vertically aligned objects was used. The launcher contacted none of them, but stopped at a point between the two central objects. The four objects then moved with similar motion properties, exhibiting the Gestalt property of common fate. Strong impressi

Nutrition and Lower Extremity Ulcers: Causality and/or Treatment.

The association between malnutrition, impaired wound healing, and the presence of chronic wounds has been recognized for a long time. It is widely believed that the lack of adequate nutrition increases the risk of developing wounds which have a great likelihood of progressing to chronicity due to lack of appropriate healing responses. This risk is particularly high in the aging population. For the individual patient, as well as patient populations, the diagnosis of malnutrition has been in dispute; further, there is lack of agreement of when and how to intervene nutritionally in those with wou

[Multi-causality in nursing work accidents with biological material].

In order to analyze the multiple causes of occupational accidents with biological exposure among nursing staff was carried out a descriptive and exploratory research in a medium-sized hospital in the State of Paraná, in the period between January 2008 and January 2009. The population was 26 nursing staff of the medical clinic. Data collection was performed by semi-structured interviews with five of the eight injured in the period and its contents were analyzed by Causes and Effects Diagram. The categories of causes material, organizational, institutional and worker's behavior, showed the inapp

Causality of pediatric brainstem infarction and basilar artery fenestration?

Pediatric arterial thromboembolic stroke is an uncommon condition and rarely is reported to be associated with a cerebral artery fenestration. This clinical report discusses the case of a child with brainstem infarction and basilar artery fenestration. A cardiac source of thromboembolic events could be excluded; however, detailed coagulation analysis revealed in addition an apoliopoprotein(a) size polymorphism. Because we assume that the two concurrent pathologies in combination caused the arterial thromboembolic stroke, the evaluation of all potential triggers including vascular anomalies and

Osteoporosis in adult with Marfan syndrome: casuality or causality?

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an inherited connective tissue disorder transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. Recent studies indicate that decreased bone mineral density (BMD) occurs in the spine, femoral necks and greater trochanters of some adults and children with MFS. Since there is uncertainty regarding the BMD status of patients with MFS, the authors present a case report on a female patient with MFS and alteration of phosphocalcic metabolism.

Perceptual causality in the amodal completion of kinetic structures.

Perceptual causality as an amodal completion of kinetic structures was demonstrated. The experimental situation was as follows: a square appeared on the left, moved from left to right till it touched one side of a stationary rectangle (a perceptual screen), and disappeared; after a while, another square appeared at the other side of the rectangle and moved right. The first square moved faster than the second one. Sometimes, two moving objects were perceived, with an amodal launching effect: the first moving object seemed to collide with the second one behind the screen. When both the screen an

Hearing impairment and cognitive decline: Alternative explanations to causality.

Despite growing interest in hearing impairment as a potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia, the association is poorly understood. This has implications for whether treating hearing impairment can prevent or delay onset of dementia, as causation is not the only explanation for the association. In this editorial, we highlight how biases in research studies might account for the reported associations. We suggest future research using different study designs and novel biomarkers to help us overcome methodological limitations. This may allow us to determine the strength of the causal pathw

Novel drug targets for delirium based on genetic causality.

BACKGROUND: Effective treatment and prevention of delirium remain challenging, largely due to the limited efficiency in identifying and validating drug targets. To address this gap, we performed a systematic Mendelian Randomization (MR) study of the druggable genome to identify potential therapeutic targets for delirium. METHODS: To identify therapeutic targets for delirium, we conducted MR and colocalization analyses using cis-eQTL data (31,684 blood samples and 1387 brain samples) and genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for delirium (discovery cohort N = 431,880; validation cohort N =

Bidirectional causality between female reproductive traits and temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common, particularly in females of reproductive age, but it remains unclear if TMD and female reproductive traits directly influence each other. Previous studies have suggested links between reproductive factors, such as the menstrual cycle and menopause, and TMD, yet any causal link is unconfirmed. This study seeks to delineate the reciprocal causal interplay between female reproductive traits and TMD. METHODS: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) approach was applied to assess five reproductive traits-age at menarche, first sexual in

Causality between immunocytes and polymyositis: A Mendelian randomization analysis.

Polymyositis is a prominent subgroup of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy, considered to have an autoimmune etiology. However, research exploring the condition between immunocytes and polymyositis remains limited, indicating the need for further investigation to unravel these intricate associations. We employed bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to ascertain causality between 731 immunocytes and polymyositis. We also compared the positive immunocytes with dermatomyositis. Our primary analytical method was inverse variance weighted, supplemented by 4 other MR techniques. Additio
