Cellular phone use while driving at night.

OBJECTIVE: Use of a cellular phone has been shown to negatively affect one's attention to the driving task, leading to an increase in crash risk. At any given daylight hour, about 6% of US drivers are actively talking on a hand-held cell phone. However, previous surveys have focused only on cell phone use during the day. Driving at night has been shown to be a riskier activity than driving during the day. The purpose of the current study was to assess the rate of hand-held cellular phone use while driving at night, using specialized night vision equipment. METHODS: In 2006, two statewide dire

Childhood emotional neglect and problematic mobile phone use among Chinese adolescents: A longitudinal moderated mediation model involving school engagement and sensation seeking.

BACKGROUND: Childhood emotional neglect has been shown to be associated with a range of emotional, behavioral and social problems. We hypothesized that childhood emotional neglect might predispose adolescents to engage in Problematic Mobile Phone Use (PMPU) as a way to meet their needs for relatedness. OBJECTIVE: Using a longitudinal design, we aimed to reveal the explanatory mechanism in the association between childhood emotional neglect and PMPU among Chinese adolescents, by testing the mediating effect of school engagement and the moderating effect of sensation seeking. METHODS: Particip

Prevalence and associated factors of nomophobia among the medical and university students of Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Nomophobia, characterised by the dread or anxiety of being without access to a mobile phone, has become an increasing behavioural issue among young adults, especially university and medical students. Excessive reliance on smartphones has been linked to psychological suffering, impaired everyday functioning, and negative academic results. Nonetheless, information about the prevalence and determinants of nomophobia among medical and university students in Bangladesh is scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of nomophobia and investigate its associated sociodemographic tr

Causal relationship between duration of mobile phone use and risk of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: A 2-sample Mendelian randomization analysis.

This study investigates whether the duration of mobile phone use (DMPU) is causally associated with the risk of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We pooled data from publicly available genome-wide association studies. DMPU was assessed in European populations (n = 456972), and genome-wide association studies data on patients with aSAH were obtained from the Common Metabolic Disease Knowledge Portal (total n = 337159; cases = 7480; controls = 329679). Inverse-variance weighted was applied as the primary Mendelian randomization (MR) method, and 2-sample MR analyses with sensitivity test

Relationship between mobile phone use and multidimensional frailty: evidence from UK Biobank.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the longitudinal temporal relationships between weekly mobile phone call time and four dimensions of frailty. METHODS: Data were derived from three instances (T1, T2, T3) of the UK Biobank. Frailty encompassed four dimensions: psychological, physical, social, and cognitive. Separate Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models (RI-CLPM) were constructed for each frailty dimension with weekly mobile phone call time, measured by self-reported weekly mobile phone call time standardized to baseline. Chi-square difference tests and the BIC were adopted for model comparisons

Mobile phone use and brain tumour risk - COSMOS, a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Each new generation of mobile phone technology has triggered discussions about potential carcinogenicity from exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). Available evidence has been insufficient to conclude about long-term and heavy mobile phone use, limited by differential recall and selection bias, or crude exposure assessment. The Cohort Study on Mobile Phones and Health (COSMOS) was specifically designed to overcome these shortcomings. METHODS: We recruited participants in Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK 2007-2012. The baseline questionnai

Short communication on the use of a free rabies hotline service in Chad.

As part of the activities of a project to estimate burden of rabies and vaccine demand in Chad, funded by the GAVI Alliance, we set up a free hotline service to guide the population and related public services in the event of an animal bite. This short communication presents the data collected on use of the hotline and describes the value of such a mobile phone service. Flyers, posters and radio advertisements distributed information on the hotline. Not every conversation was systematically registered, but we gathered information from 345 calls in total, including caller location and reason fo

Understanding the psychology of mobile gambling: A behavioural synthesis.

This manuscript reviews the extant literature on key issues related to mobile gambling and considers whether the potential risks of harm emerging from this platform are driven by pre-existing comorbidities or by psychological processes unique to mobile gambling. We propose an account based on associative learning that suggests this form of gambling is likely to show distinctive features compared with other gambling technologies. Smartphones are a rapidly growing platform on which individuals can gamble using specifically designed applications, adapted websites or text messaging. This review co

An Unusual Cause of Internal Carotid Artery Dissection: Mobile Phone Misuse.

The use of mobile phones has become an indispensable part of our lives, especially due to widespread use of the internet. We report the case of a 38-year-old male patient who developed internal carotid artery dissection after talking on the phone between her left shoulder and ear by laterally flexing the neck for 20 minutes. In addition to many positive effects of technology that facilitate the daily life, the development of neurological deficits may be observed with widespread use of mobile phones. Misuse of mobile phone should be considered in patients with carotid artery dissection.

The limitations of mobile phone data for measuring movement patterns of populations at risk of malaria.

BACKGROUND: As global mobile phone adoption increases, mobile phone data has been increasingly used to measure movement patterns of populations at risk of malaria. However, the representativeness of mobile phone data for populations at risk of malaria has not been assessed. This study aimed to assess this representativeness using prospectively collected data on mobile phone ownership and use from malaria patients in Lao PDR. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted from 2017 to 2021. 6320 patients with confirmed malaria in 107 health facilities in the five southernmost provinc

Effects of Recall and Selection Biases on Modeling Cancer Risk From Mobile Phone Use: Results From a Case-Control Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: The largest case-control study (Interphone study) investigating glioma risk related to mobile phone use showed a J-shaped relationship with reduced relative risks for moderate use and a 40% increased relative risk among the 10% heaviest regular mobile phone users, using a categorical risk model based on deciles of lifetime duration of use among ever regular users. METHODS: We conducted Monte Carlo simulations examining whether the reported estimates are compatible with an assumption of no effect of mobile phone use on glioma risk when the various forms of biases present in the Int

The Systematic Development of a Mobile Phone Delivered Text-Messaging Tobacco Cessation Intervention in India.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco consumption is a leading cause of mortality globally. Eighty percent of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Despite this, there is a large treatment gap due to both demand and supply-side barriers. Digital interventions are an innovative solution to bridge this gap. We describe the systematic development of ToQuit, a text-messaging intervention for tobacco cessation in India. AIMS AND METHODS: ToQuit was developed in sequential steps: (1) Identifying Behaviour Change Techniques (BCTs) from evidence-based tobacco cessation interventions; (2) Identifyin

Functional connectivity between the parahippocampal gyrus and the middle temporal gyrus moderates the relationship between problematic mobile phone use and depressive symptoms: Evidence from a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) is prevalent and increases the risk for a variety of health problems. However, few studies have explored the neural mechanisms that might render adolescents more or less vulnerable. Here, we aimed to identify whether PMPU is associated with depressive symptoms and whether this relationship is moderated by intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) which is associated with PMPU. METHODS: In this longitudinal study, we included 238 students (mean age = 19.05, SD = 0.81) that came from a university in Hefei, China. They all finished MRI scans

Examining stable and dynamic factors associated with daily problematic mobile phone use: Evidence from a 14-day diary study using machine learning and network analysis.

This study used machine learning with SHAP to identify key predictors of daily problematic mobile phone use (PMPU), and then applied network analysis to examine the associations between these selected key factors and PMPU across between-person, within-day, and across-day levels. A total of 279 undergraduate students in China completed a baseline assessment and a 14-day daily diary investigation. The results showed that the Random Forest model achieved meaningful out-of-sample prediction of next-day PMPU. SHAP analysis indicated that day-level factors contributed most to prediction (e.g., daily
