Extraosseous cemento-ossifying fibroma beneath the left buccal mucosa: a case report.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a benign mesenchymal odontogenic tumor that commonly occurs in the tooth-bearing areas of the maxilla and mandible. This study reports a COF case located under the left buccal mucosa. The classification and differential diagnosis of this COF case were discussed based on the diagnosis and treatment of this case and previous literature.

Update on the molecular pathology of the distinctive giant cell, fibro-osseous and bone forming lesions of the jaws.

In the 5th edition World Health Organisation (WHO) classification of head and neck tumours, lesions that are distinctive in the jaws for reasons of presentation, behaviour or molecular changes are separated from the bone tumour classification and listed with head and neck tumours in a section on odontogenic and maxillofacial bone tumours. The molecular characterisation of these lesions has advanced recently and this narrative review discusses critically the genetic alterations in the odontogenic tumours that form bone/cementum (variable findings), giant cell-rich lesions of the jaws (sporadic

Jaffe-Lichtenstein Syndrome Associated with a Simple Bone Cyst: Unprecedented Rare Case Report.

Lesions denominated fibro-osseous lesions of the jaw constitute a diversified group of disorders, in which the normal bone architecture is replaced by fibroblasts, collagen fibers and immature bone. At present, the World Health Organization recognizes four variants of these lesions, namely: bone-cement dysplasia, fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma and Familial gigantiform cementoma. Fibrous dysplasia may present in the monostotic form, affecting one single bone or an isolated craniofacial region; and in the Polyostotic form, involving two or more bones of the skeleton, and eventual associati

Cemento-ossifying fibroma of the maxilla.

Despite the fact that cemento-ossifying fibromas of the maxilla may be quite large and locally aggressive, en-bloc excision is achieved by gentle blunt dissection, with the whole tumour mass peeled out from the adjacent structures. Until recently different fibro-osseous tumours that contained cementum were classified together as "cementomas". In 1992 The World Health Organization adopted a new classification that included these fibromas as benign osseous tumours. While such tumours of the mandible are common, those of the maxilla are rare. They are growth products of periodontal membrane remna

A Clinical, Radiological and Histopathological Review of 74 Ossifying Fibromas.

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws and craniofacial bones. Accurate diagnosis can be challenging due to significant overlap of clinicopathological features. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical, radiological and histological features that can aid in diagnosis and identify characteristics that allow categorisation into the three subtypes: juvenile trabecular, psammomatoid and cemento-ossifying OF. METHODS: A total of 74 cases of OF were systematically reviewed for their principle features. Of these, 46 cases were evaluated for their radiographic featu

Soft Tissue Special Issue: Gnathic Fibro-Osseous Lesions and Osteosarcoma.

Gnathic fibro-osseous lesions are a diverse group of disease processes which share overlapping microscopic features characterized by fibroblastic stroma with variable cellularity and a range of bone forming pathological processes leading to woven, sclerotic and cementum-like structures. Some of the lesions are unique to craniofacial location and a combination of clinical, radiological and pathological correlation is often necessary for diagnostic accuracy. Gnathic osteosarcomas are rare tumors with differences in age distribution and behavior as compared to osteosarcoma of long bones. This rev

Benign cementoblastoma.

An unusual case of cementoblastoma is presented. It is the second case to be published demonstrating involvement of the pulp, and it is the first instance of a cementoblastoma that appears to have evolved from an impacted tooth. A review of the literature substantiates the fact that this lesion may not be so uncommon as was previously thought, and that pain and facial asymmetry may be significant clinical features.

Juvenile aggressive cemento-ossifying fibroma of the sinonasal tract: case report.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a rare nonodontogenic tumor of the periodontal membrane that arises from the mesodermal germ layer. Clinically, these lesions are usually asymptomatic, slowly growing, and well circumscribed. However, they have demonstrated an aggressive course of development in a very small number of cases, particularly in younger patients. Surgical management via wide local excision is necessary because COF is notorious for recurrence, particularly lesions in the paranasal sinuses. We describe a case of juvenile aggressive COF of the sinonasal tract in a 12-year-old boy. Th

Crouzonodermoskeletal syndrome.

Crouzon craniostenosis [MIM 123500], is identified on the basis of the additional phenotypical manifestations of acanthosis nigricans, vertebral changes and cementomas of the jaws. Choanal atresia and hydrocephalus are other features. The molecular defect in CDSS is a point mutation in the FGFR3 gene on chromosome 4p, whereas, the mutation in the Crouzon syndrome is in the FGFR2 gene at 10q25.3-26. An affected girl aged 2 years presented at the UWC dental genetics unit with a prior diagnosis of Crouzon syndrome. Choanal atresia had necessitated a permanent tracheostomy, and hydrocephalus was m

Three novel ANO5 missense mutations in Caucasian and Chinese families and sporadic cases with gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia.

Gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia (GDD; MIM#166260) is an autosomal dominant syndrome with characteristic cemento-osseous lesions of jawbones, bone fragility, and diaphyseal sclerosis of tubular bones. To date, only five mutations in the proposed calcium-activated chloride channel ANO5/TMEM16E gene have been identified. In this study, we describe two families and two singular patients with three new mutations. One Caucasian family with seven affected members exhibited frequent bone fractures and florid osseous dysplasia (p.Cys356Tyr), while one Chinese family with two affected members suffered from c

Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma in a child: a case report.

Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma is a gingival lesion of reactive nature and unknown etiology. Such a lesion can either interfere with normal tooth eruption or become a factor in plaque development, which usually results in caries formation in newly erupted teeth. Therefore, the objective of the present article was to report a case of peripheral cemento ossifying fibroma occurring in the mandibular posterior region of a 11-year-old girl in association with both absence of premolar eruption and presence of severely caried first permanent molar.

Cystic Shape Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma of Ethmoid Sinus.

Cemento-ossifying fibromas are a group of rarely occurring benign tumours, developing from the periodontal membrane and varying considerably in appearance and in the progress of the disease. Their common feature is higher or lower production of cemental tissue. In most cases the tumours are small because their cementoma mature quickly and become inactive, which causes the tumour to stop growing. They develop most frequently in the mandible and also in the maxilla. Other sites, such as paranasal cavities, soft tissues and bones of the head, are extremely rare. The case of a cemento-fibrosing tu
