A classification approach to categorize urbanized landscapes in California and trait variation in Maltese starthistle.

There is increasing evidence that the traits of organisms can differ in urban environments, but defining what makes an environment "urban" is difficult. There are many variables associated with increasing human impacts that might be associated with urbanization, and this makes it challenging to identify both how traits vary across diverse urbanized landscapes and the variables that might drive that variation. To better define the mosaic of urban environmental heterogeneity and identify similar environments that are comparable across its complexity, we developed a multivariate landscape classif

Effect of various pretreatments on the hypothermic activity of repin in naive rats.

Repin is a sesquiterpene lactone found in Centaurea solstitialis, a plant responsible for Parkinson-like disease in horses. Repin, on intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection, produces a dose-dependent and highly significant hypothermia in naive rats. The hypothermia is long-lasting with a peak 3 h after the injection and a return to normal temperature after more than 8 h. The effects of atropine sulfate, atropine methylbromide, propranolol, metergoline, ketanserin, diphenhydramine and apomorphine pretreatment on repin-induced hypothermia were investigated. None of the pretreatments directly antagoniz

Phytochemical investigation of Volutaria lippii and evaluation of the antioxidant activity.

Volutaria lippii (L.) Cass. ex Maire, syn. Centaurea lippii (L.), (Asteraceae) is a plant from the central region of Algeria, considerably distributed in all Mediterranean areas. Herein, the antioxidant activity of the three derived fractions [chloroform (CHCl3), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and n-butanol (n-BuOH)] of the 70% methanol extract of the aerial parts (leaves and flowers), was assessed by using CUPRAC, ABTS, DPPH free radical scavenging, and β-carotene bleaching methods. The results obtained allowed to guide the fractionation of EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions by CC followed by purification by

The Anthelmintic Ingredient Moxidectin Negatively Affects Seed Germination of Three Temperate Grassland Species.

In animal farming, anthelmintics are regularly applied to control gastrointestinal nematodes. There is plenty of evidence that also non-target organisms, such as dung beetles, are negatively affected by residues of anthelmintics in faeces of domestic ungulates. By contrast, knowledge about possible effects on wild plants is scarce. To bridge this gap of knowledge, we tested for effects of the common anthelmintic formulation Cydectin and its active ingredient moxidectin on seed germination. We conducted a feeding experiment with sheep and germination experiments in a climate chamber. Three wide

Anthocyanin-rich edible flowers - Impact of food matrix on anthocyanin stability, digestion and absorption: the case of wild pansy, cosmos and cornflower.

Edible flowers are emerging functional ingredients and dietary sources of anthocyanins, yet the influence of food matrices and digestion on their bioaccessibility and absorption remains unclear. Wild pansy (Viola tricolor), cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus), and cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) were evaluated for nutritional composition, phytochemical content, and anthocyanin stability, digestibility, and absorption. All species showed high dietary fiber content, with species-dependent differences in nutritional and phenolic composition. Anthocyanin stability was pH- and matrix-dependent, and strongly i

Assessment of the hepatoprotective effect of developed lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (LPHNPs) encapsulating naturally extracted β-Sitosterol against CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity in rats.

The hepatoprotective effect of β-Sitosterol (BSS), a natural phytosterol, after being formulated into a suitable pharmaceutical drug delivery system has not been widely explored. BSS was isolated from Centaurea pumilio L., identified and formulated as lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (LPHNPs) using the poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) polymer and DSPE-PEG-2000 lipid in different ratios. The selected formulation, prepared with a lipid: polymer: drug ratio of 2:2:2, had an entrapment efficiency (EE%) of 94.42 ± 3.8, particle size of 181.5 ± 11.3 nm, poly dispersity index (PDI) of 0.223 ± 0.06, z

Root volatiles in plant-plant interactions II: Root volatiles alter root chemistry and plant-herbivore interactions of neighbouring plants.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plant roots can influence the germination and growth of neighbouring plants. However, little is known about the effects of root VOCs on plant-herbivore interactions of neighbouring plants. The spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) constitutively releases high amounts of sesquiterpenes into the rhizosphere. Here, we examine the impact of C. stoebe root VOCs on the primary and secondary metabolites of sympatric Taraxacum officinale plants and the resulting plant-mediated effects on a generalist root herbivore, the white grub Melolontha melolontha. We sh

Toxic equine parkinsonism: an immunohistochemical study of 10 horses with nigropallidal encephalomalacia.

Chronic ingestion of yellow star thistle (Centaurea solstitialis) or Russian knapweed (Acroptilon repens) causes nigropallidal encephalomalacia (NPE) in horses with an abrupt onset of neurologic signs characterized by dystonia of lips and tongue, inability to prehend food, depression, and locomotor deficits. The objectives of this study were to reexamine the pathologic alterations of NPE and to conduct an immunohistochemistry study using antibodies to tyrosine hydroxylase and α-synuclein, to determine whether NPE brains show histopathologic features resembling those in human Parkinson disease.

Cornflower Extract and Its Active Components Alleviate Dexamethasone-Induced Muscle Wasting by Targeting Cannabinoid Receptors and Modulating Gut Microbiota.

Sarcopenia, a decline in muscle mass and strength, can be triggered by aging or medications like glucocorticoids. This study investigated cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) water extract (CC) as a potential protective agent against DEX-induced muscle wasting in vitro and in vivo. CC and its isolated compounds mitigated oxidative stress, promoted myofiber growth, and boosted ATP production in C2C12 myotubes. Mechanistically, CC reduced protein degradation markers, increased mitochondrial content, and activated protein synthesis signaling. Docking analysis suggested cannabinoid receptors (CB) 1 and 2

Cynaropicrin: the first plant natural product with in vivo activity against Trypanosoma brucei.

A screen of 1800 plant and fungal extracts with subsequent HPLC-based activity profiling was done to identify new antiprotozoal leads from nature. This led to the identification of cynaropicrin (1) from the herb CENTAUREA SALMANTICA L. (Asteraceae) as a potent IN VITRO inhibitor of TRYPANOSOMA BRUCEI RHODESIENSE. It preferentially inhibited T. B. RHODESIENSE (IC (50) of 0.3 µM) and T. BRUCEI GAMBIENSE (IC (50) of 0.2 µM), compared to TRYPANOSOMA CRUZI (IC (50) of 4.4 µM) and PLASMODIUM FALCIPARUM (IC (50) of 3.0 µM). Temperature moderates impact of formulated moxidectin on seed germination of three temperate grassland species.

Formulations of macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics such as moxidectin are regularly administered to sheep to combat parasites. A disadvantage of these pharmaceuticals are their side effects on non-target organisms when entering the environment. Little is known about anthelmintic effects on plant reproduction and whether the effects depend on environmental factors. For ecological and methodological reasons, we aimed at testing whether temperature affects the efficacy of a common moxidectin-based formulation on seed germination. We carried out a germination experiment including three typical spec

Crumbotti and rose petals in a ghost mountain valley: foraging, landscape, and their transformations in the upper Borbera Valley, NW Italy.

BACKGROUND: The abandonment of mountain areas in Europe is a process that started during industrialisation and whose traces are still present nowadays. Initiatives aimed at stopping this decline and preserving the local biological and cultural diversities reflect the crucial issue of fostering sustainable rural development. This article contributes to the ongoing debate in assessing and preserving local ecological knowledge (LEK) in a highly marginalised mountain community in the Piedmontese Apennines to support local development. In so doing, it continues a larger project assessing how local
