Konzo outbreak among refugees from Central African Republic in Eastern region, Cameroon.

Konzo is a spastic paraparesis of sudden onset, linked to the exclusive consumption of insufficiently processed bitter cassava as staple food combined with low protein intake. Around 60,000 refugees from the Central African Republic sought refuge in villages in eastern Cameroon between 2005 and 2007. Médecins Sans Frontières was providing nutritional and medical assistance in the villages affected by displacement. We describe cases of konzo seen at the mobile clinics organized in these villages. Basic information including demographic data, history and clinical presentation was recorded for ea

[Current serologic data on viral hemorrhagic fevers in the Central African Republic].

During the years 1984-1985, 1,528 serum samples were taken through out the CAR. Of these sera, 319 (20.8%) contained anti-Filoviridae antibodies (Ebola, Marburg). This figure is higher than those found in Cameroon, Sudan, Gabon and Zaïre. Three zones of the country are particularly exposed, the North-East where the population is in the contact with Sudan Ebola, the South-East where it is in contact with Zaïre Ebola, and the South-West where it is in contact with Sudan Ebola. The authors believe that there could exist either a Central African Ebola strain or an Ebola-Like less pathogenic virus

Serological surveillance of brucellosis and Q fever in cattle in the Central African Republic.

No data are available concerning the seroprevalence of brucellosis in Central African Republic (CAR) and the last report concerning the seroprevalence of Q fever in CAR is from 1995. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of these diseases in CAR, especially in Zebu cattle. We used the Rose Bengal Plate Test to test 2032 bovine serum samples for antibodies to Brucella spp. and an indirect immunofluorescence assay to test 784 bovine serum samples for antibodies to Coxiella burnetii (the species responsible for Q fever). The mean seroprevalences of antibodies to Brucella and Coxiel

Blindness and visual impairment in a region endemic for onchocerciasis in the Central African Republic.

AIMS: A population based survey of blindness and visual impairment was conducted in the district of Bossangoa, Central African Republic. METHODS: A total of 48 communities were randomly selected, and 6086 people examined. RESULTS: The prevalence of blindness (visual acuity in the better eye less than 3/60) was 2.2%, and visual impairment 3.0% (6/24 to 3/60 in the better eye). The major causes of blindness were onchocerciasis (73.1%), cataract (16.4%), trachoma (4.5%), and glaucoma (2.2%). CONCLUSION: Around 95.5% of all blindness could potentially have been prevented or treated. Ivermectin

Pityriasis versicolor in the Central African Republic: a randomized study of 144 cases.

The prevalence and the principal epidemiological characteristics of pityriasis versicolor have been studied in a randomized population of 870 adult individuals (418 males and 452 females) in the Central African Republic. The general clinical prevalence was 16.6%. Males were affected more often than females (20.6% vs. 12.9%). For both sexes, the maximum prevalence was in the 15 to 25-year-old age groups (23.5%). Lesions commonly occurred over the face (49.3%) and upper trunk (48.6%). Different climatic areas within the country, type of urbanization, religion and general hygiene showed no releva

Hepatic and pulmonary cystic echinococcosis in a patient from the Central African Republic.

Apical lung opacity was diagnosed in an asymptomatic 30 year-old woman native of Central African Republic by routine chest X-ray. CT scan demonstrated an excavated pulmonary mass and revealed a simple hepatic cyst. Tuberculosis was suspected but mycobacterial cultures remained negative. Three months later, ultrasonography showed septations within the hepatic lesion suggestive of cystic echinococcosis. The detection of seric anti-Echinococcus antibodies was positive. Hepatic and pulmonary cysts were removed surgically and association with three-month course of albendazole resulted in a favorabl

Onchocerciasis and epilepsy: a matched case-control study in the Central African Republic.

The occurrence of epileptic seizures during onchocercal infestation has been suspected. Epidemiologic studies are necessary to confirm the relation between onchocerciasis and epilepsy. A matched case-control study was conducted in dispensaries of three northwestern towns of the Central African Republic. Each epileptic case was matched against two nonepileptic controls on the six criteria of sex, age (+/-5 years), residence, treatment with ivermectin, date of last ivermectin dose, and the number of ivermectin doses. Onchocerciasis was defined as at least one microfilaria observed in iliac crest

Presumed Transmission of 2 Distinct Monkeypox Virus Variants from Central African Republic to Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We linked 4 mpox cases in South Ubangi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, to transboundary transmission from Central African Republic. Viral genome sequencing demonstrated that the monkeypox virus sequences belonged to distinct clusters of subclade Ia. This finding demonstrates the borderless nature of mpox and highlights the need for vigilant regional surveillance.

[Cost of a national program to control human African trypanosomiasis in the high Mbomou region, Central African Republic].

An outbreak of human African trypanosiaisis is ongoing in the High Mbomou area of the Central African Republic. This area is located on the Sudanese border approximately 1,100 kilometers from the capital city of Bangui. According to current estimates, the cost of implementing the National Human African Trypanosomiasis Program is 754,000 United States Dollars, i.e., 4.1 dollars per protected inhabitant. However actual conditions in the field suggest that this estimate should be revised. Special field conditions include constant refugee movement across the border, lack of accurate epidemiologica

Subclinical Plasmodium spp. Infections in a Community Setting in Bangui, Central African Republic.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health problem in the Central African Republic (CAR). Data on malaria epidemiology are often derived from confirmed cases of symptomatic malaria using passive detection approaches, with very limited knowledge of the extent of subclinical and submicroscopic infections. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Bangui, the capital of the CAR, to assess the prevalence of subclinical malaria parasitaemia. Proportions of positive tests for malaria parasites were determined by combining the results of antigen-based malaria rapid diagnost

Continuous Circulation of Yellow Fever among Rural Populations in the Central African Republic.

Yellow fever remains a public-health threat in remote regions of Africa. Here, we report the identification and genetic characterisation of one yellow-fever case observed during the investigation of a cluster of nine suspected haemorrhagic fever cases in a village in the Central African Republic. Samples were tested using real-time RT-PCR targeting the main African haemorrhagic fever viruses. Following negative results, we attempted virus isolation on VERO E6 cells and new-born mice and rescreened the samples using rRT-PCR. The whole viral genome was sequenced using an Illumina NovaSeq 6000 se

Free-living amoebae isolated in the Central African Republic: epidemiological and molecular aspects.

Among the many species of free-living amoebae infecting humans, only Naegleria fowleri, a few species of Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia mandrillaris recently Sappinia diploïdea and Paravahlkampfia Francina are responsible for human diseases especially deadly encephalitis outside of Acanthamoeba keratitis related. In the Central African Republic (CAR), no studies have previously been conducted about free amoebae and no suspicious cases of encephalitis or amoebic keratitis was reported even though the ecosystem supported the proliferation of these microorganisms. The objective of this study was to ide

Entomological profile of yellow fever epidemics in the Central African Republic, 2006-2010.

BACKGROUND: The causative agent of yellow fever is an arbovirus of the Flaviviridae family transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes, particularly in Africa. In the Central African Republic since 2006, cases have been notified in the provinces of Ombella-Mpoko, Ouham-Pende, Basse-Kotto, Haute-Kotto and in Bangui the capital. As the presence of a vector of yellow fever virus (YFV) represents a risk for spread of the disease, we undertook entomological investigations at these sites to identify potential vectors of YFV and their abundance. FINDINGS: Between 2006 and 2010, 5066 mosquitoes belongin
