Ascariasis-associated worm encephalopathy in a young child.

Infestation with Ascaris lumbricoides in children has a varied manifestation, but encephalopathy is a very rare presentation. This report describes a case of ascariasis-associated encephalopathy in a child. An 18-month-old boy was admitted with altered sensorium. He had a history of vomiting and was passing Ascaris worms in the vomitus. The cerebrospinal fluid analysis did not reveal any abnormality. The patient was treated with an antihelminthic drug and he recovered completely. Worm encephalopathy should be considered as a differential diagnosis for unexplained encephalopathy in tropical are

Lagochilascariasis: A Neglected Zoonosis in the Brazilian Amazon Biome and the Role of Wildlife in Its Epidemiological Chain Amidst Anthropization.

Lagochilascariasis is a neglected zoonotic helminthiasis, caused by Lagochilascaris minor, characterized by a complex and not well understood transmission cycle. This parasitic disease is endemic to Latin America, particularly Brazil, and is associated with rural and forested areas, where humans may serve as accidental hosts. The southeastern region of Pará state reports the highest number of cases, highlighting its epidemiological significance. Wildlife species, especially carnivores and rodents, play crucial roles as definitive and intermediate hosts, respectively. Although lagochilascariasi

CT and MR characteristics of cerebral sparganosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection in humans by a larval cestode of the genus Spirometra. Preoperative diagnosis of cerebral sparganosis in the past has been very difficult. Our objective was to evaluate the CT and MR features of cerebral sparganosis in order to make a definite diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 25 patients (13 male and 12 female; age range, 9-83 years) who proved to have cerebral sparganosis. Fifteen patients underwent MR imaging: 2 patients had CT scanning, and the remaining 8 had both CT and MR scanning. We focused

Helminth infections of the central nervous system occurring in Southeast Asia and the Far East.

Although helminth infections of the central nervous system (CNS) are rare, their public health implications must not be neglected. Indeed, several helminth species can cause cerebrospinal infections, especially if humans serve as intermediate or non-permissive host. The diagnosis of cerebrospinal helminthiases is difficult, and the detection of parasites in cerebrospinal fluid is rarely successful. Cerebrospinal helminth infections therefore often remain undetected, and hence prognosis is poor. Increases in tourism and population movements are risk factors for cerebrospinal helminthiases and i

Case Report: Angiostrongylus cantonesis Myelitis in Thailand.

A 67-year-old man presented with headache, middle back pain that radiated to both legs, and paresthesia in the right leg for 1 day. He had eaten raw shrimp 1 week previously. Over the next week after admission, he developed urinary retention and weakness in both legs. The numbness in his right leg expanded to below the umbilicus. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spinal cord showed myelopathy with minimal cord swelling at T9 to the conus medullaris and a hemorrhagic lesion from T10 to T11. A complete blood count on day 28 after the onset of symptoms revealed leukocytosis without eosinophilia a

Gut microbiota disturbance during helminth infection: can it affect cognition and behaviour of children?

BACKGROUND: Bidirectional signalling between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract is regulated at neural, hormonal, and immunological levels. Recent studies have shown that helminth infections can alter the normal gut microbiota. Studies have also shown that the gut microbiota is instrumental in the normal development, maturation and function of the brain. The pathophysiological pathways by which helminth infections contribute to altered cognitive function remain poorly understood. DISCUSSION: We put forward the hypothesis that gastrointestinal infections with parasitic worms, such as hel

The clinical, radiological and surgical aspects of cerebral hydatid cysts in children.

A series of 13 pediatric patients underwent surgery for cerebral hydatid cysts at the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery between 1993 and 2003. Headache and motor weakness were the main initial signs of these patients. A round cystic lesion was the characteristic appearance on computed tomography of each patient. Different cyst locations such as the liver, kidney or spleen were detected in 5 patients. Surgery using Dowling's technique was performed in all patients as the main treatment. Intraoperative rupture and cyst recurrence were observed in only 1 patient. Subdural effusion, intraparenc

Radiologic-pathologic findings in raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) encephalitis.

A 13-month-old boy developed eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, retinitis, and a protracted encephalopathy with severe residual deficits. The initial MR examination revealed diffuse periventricular white matter disease, and follow-up images showed atrophy. Brain biopsy, serology, and epidemiologic studies lead to the diagnosis of Baylisascaris procyonis infection, a parasitic disease contracted through exposure to soil contaminated by the eggs of a common raccoon intestinal roundworm. The pathologic, epidemiologic, and imaging features of this disease are herein reviewed.

Fifty years of the Korean Society for Parasitology.

In 1959, the Korean Society for Parasitology was founded by clinical scientists, specialists of public health, and 5 core parasitologists with experience in American science and medicine. The Society this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. Due to public health importance at the time of foundation, medical parasitology was the main stream for next 3 decades. Domestic problems of niche parasitic diseases, unlisted in 6 tropical diseases of major importance, had been studied by own efforts. To cope with the demand of parasite control, evaluation system for control activity was built up. Contro

Primary intramedullary hydatid cyst: a case report and literature review.

Intramedullary hydatid cyst is extremely rare. We present a case of pathologically confirmed primary intramedullary hydatid cyst in an otherwise healthy patient. A 17-year-old boy presented with lumbar pain, weakness, and numbness in both lower limbs, and urinate difficulty interrupted for 2 years. The patient had no other signs of systemic hydatid cyst disease. An intramedullary cystic lesion was identified with magnetic resonance imaging and was shown to be a hydatid cyst by histopathologic examination after the surgical removal. Although extremely rare, primary intramedullary hydatid cyst p

[Brain hydatidosis: report of four cases].

In only 2% of all cases of hydatidosis, the cysts are located in the brain. We report a 12-year-old male, a 5-year-old girl and a 19-year-old female consulting for intracranial hypertension and a 13-year-old male consulting for a left hemiparesis. Imaging studies found intra-cerebral cysts with characteristics of hydatidosis in all. All lesions were completely removed surgically and the pathological study of the excised piece confirmed the diagnosis of hydatidosis.

[Toxocariasis].

The clinical presentation of toxocariasis, a zoonotic parasitosis transmitted from dogs and cats to humans, can be very diverse, which is one of the reasons why Toxocara-related disease may go unnoticed. This paper gives a brief summary of the various clinical presentations (covert/common toxocariasis, visceral larva migrans, ocular toxocariasis and neurotoxocariasis), diagnostic and differential-diagnostic considerations as well as treatment and prevention. In brief, the diagnosis of human toxocariasis relies mainly on patient data, anamnestic information, symptoms, eosinophil count and total

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection: difficulties in diagnosis and treatment.

Immunocompromised patients who are infected with Strongyloides stercoralis may develop a potentially fatal auto-infection syndrome characterised by non-specific pulmonary and gastrointestinal symptoms and Gram negative sepsis. We present the case of one such patient who underwent a negative laparotomy for a presumed intra-abdominal surgical catastrophe with a subsequent protracted stay on the intensive care unit. Once the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis was made, the patient was successfully treated with subcutaneous antihelminthic drugs. With appropriate screening for and eradication of strongy

Additive larvicidal activity of albendazole combined with a hydroxyethylamine-derived compound against Toxocara canis larvae: An in vitro and in silico study.

Human toxocariasis is a neglected zoonotic helminthiasis characterized by larval migration through tissues such as the liver, lungs, central nervous system, and eyes. Current pharmacological treatment presents variable efficacy, highlighting the need for improved therapeutic strategies. This study evaluated the larvicidal activity of albendazole combined with heteroaromatic sulfonamide compounds derived from hydroxyethylamine against Toxocara canis, using in vitro assays, in silico analyses, and a checkerboard design. Three synthetic compounds were initially screened for larvicidal activity an

Central nervous signs, blindness and cerebral vermicosis in free-ranging peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) associated with aberrant larval migrations.

Four free-ranging peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) were submitted with a history of unilateral or bilateral blindness and central nervous signs to a veterinary clinic in Germany. There were no indications of trauma or ocular disease. Likewise, other differential diagnoses for CNS signs were ruled out within the diagnostic process. The clinical diagnostic panel in live falcons included general examination, radiography, endoscopy, hematology, ophthalmoscopy and parasitological examination of the feces, blood gas analysis and blood chemistry as well as computed tomography, and magnetic resona

Diffusion-weighted and conventional MR imaging in neurotrichinosis.

Central nervous system involvement in trichinosis is not rare. Brain lesions in trichinosis have been defined on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as multifocal small lesions located in the cerebral cortex and white matter. We present a case of trichinosis with multifocal lesions of the brain detected by MRI and diffusion weighted MRI. Evolutions of these lesions from acute through chronic stages on follow up studies are also presented. This is the first report describing sequential MRI findings and diffusion weighted imaging appearance of brain lesions in trichinosis. S
