Non-invasive neuromuscular electrical stimulation in patients with central nervous system lesions: an educational review.

The aim of this educational review is to provide an overview of the clinical application of transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the extremities in patients with upper motor neurone lesions. In general two methods of electrical stimulation can be distinguished: (i) therapeutic electrical stimulation, and (ii) functional electrical stimulation. Therapeutic electrical stimulation improves neuromuscular functional condition by strengthening muscles, increasing motor control, reducing spasticity, decreasing pain and increasing range of motion. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation may be used

Biological effects of stannous chloride, a substance that can produce stimulation or depression of the central nervous system.

It was demonstrated that tin, as stannous chloride (SnCl(2)), can facilitate the neuromuscular transmission by accelerating the transmitter release from the nerve terminals in the mouse. When this salt is injected into laboratory animals, it can produce stimulation or depression of the central nervous system. Because calcium (Ca(2+)) influx into the cytoplasm is indispensable to release the transmitter, it would be possible that SnCl(2) increases the Ca(2+) influx at the nerve terminals but not by blocking the K(+) channels. SnCl(2) is known to inhibit the immune response in rodents and to ind

Intra-operative direct electrical stimulations of the central nervous system: the Salpêtrière experience with 60 patients.

Indications of surgical treatment for lesions in the central nervous system depend on the risk of a definitive neurological deficit, related to the benefit of resection. Detection of eloquent areas is then necessary because of major individual variability. Neuro-imaging functional techniques are in development and are beginning to be efficient for cortical sensorymotor mapping, but still lack sensitivity and specificity for language mapping, and remain unable to give real-time data during surgery and to perform sub-cortical mapping. The more precise and reliable method of functional mapping is

Patterns and trends in prevalent central nervous system stimulant use in US veterans with traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) may experience cognitive and behavioral symptoms resembling attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, used for ADHD, are not recommended for TBI but are prescribed off-label. We examined patterns and trends of prevalent stimulant use among veterans with TBI. METHODS: Of the 966,953 US veterans with TBI (2001-2023), 11,710 were prevalent users of CNS stimulants, defined as prescription fills during six months before first TBI diagnosis in the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare syst

Non-invasive central nervous system stimulation to improve bladder and pelvic floor function in the aging population.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The literature was reviewed for all noninvasive central nervous system (CNS) stimulation techniques, which includes transcranial brain or trans-spinal stimulation, in the aging population. Given the rising ubiquity of this technology, noninvasive nature, and low side-effect profile reported, this technology can have a big impact on the aging population. As patients afflicted with neurogenic disorders are living longer lives, a special emphasis is placed on the aging neurogenic population. RECENT FINDINGS: Noninvasive CNS stimulation techniques have been applied to major bla

Expression and mechanisms of interferon-stimulated genes in viral infection of the central nervous system (CNS) and neurological diseases.

Interferons (IFNs) bind to cell surface receptors and activate the expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) through intracellular signaling cascades. ISGs and their expression products have various biological functions, such as antiviral and immunomodulatory effects, and are essential effector molecules for IFN function. ISGs limit the invasion and replication of the virus in a cell-specific and region-specific manner in the central nervous system (CNS). In addition to participating in natural immunity against viral infections, studies have shown that ISGs are essential in the pathogen

Cytokines in the central nervous system: expression of macrophage colony stimulating factor and its receptor during development.

To investigate the potential role of cytokines in the development of the central nervous system, we analyzed the production of cytokine mRNA transcripts by S1-nuclease protection analysis in the brains of Swiss-Webster mice during fetal development and after birth. Cytokines studied were interleukin (IL)-1 alpha, IL-2, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF), granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF). Only mRNA transcripts for M-CSF were found to be produced c

Transcranial low-intensity ultrasound stimulation for treating central nervous system disorders: A promising therapeutic application.

Transcranial ultrasound stimulation is a neurostimulation technique that has gradually attracted the attention of researchers, especially as a potential therapy for neurological disorders, because of its high spatial resolution, its good penetration depth, and its non-invasiveness. Ultrasound can be categorized as high-intensity and low-intensity based on the intensity of its acoustic wave. High-intensity ultrasound can be used for thermal ablation by taking advantage of its high-energy characteristics. Low-intensity ultrasound, which produces low energy, can be used as a means to regulate the

The effect of central nervous system depressant, stimulant and hallucinogenic drugs on injury severity in patients admitted for trauma.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of drugs other than alcohol on severity of trauma remains unclear. Pooled data analyses in previous studies that grouped substances with opposite effects on the central nervous system (CNS) may have masked the influence of substances on injury severity. The aim was to analyze the effect of stimulant, hallucinogenic and depressant drugs other than alcohol on injury severity in trauma patients. METHODS: The presence of alcohol, stimulant drugs (cocaine, amphetamines and methamphetamines), depressant drugs (benzodiazepines, opiates, methadone and barbiturates) and hallucino

[Gamma-hydroxybutyrate--an endogenous substance and a new central nervous system stimulant. Clinical aspects of acute poisoning].

During the last six months, the Poison Control Centre at Bispebjerg Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark, has observed an increasing number of patients intoxicated with GHB, a drug of abuse. The patients are often admitted to the emergency ward shortly after having taken the drug, unconscious or comatose. If younger patients present with these symptoms, intoxication with GHB should be seriously considered. The effects are seen within 15 to 30 minutes after oral ingestion of the drug. Spontaneous recovery usually occurs within three to five hours. The most common effects are mild euphoria, sedation, v

Clinical studies of thyrotropin-releasing hormone tartrate (TRH-T) as a direct stimulant to the central nervous system.

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone tartrate (TRH-T) was administered in 17 cases of organic brain lesions and 2 cases of disturbed mental activity (psychical depression), and its effect, mainly on the level of consciousness and electroencephalogram, was examined. Ten consecutive administrations of 0.5--1.0 mg/day TRH-T, as TRH, resulted in improvement of disturbance of consciousness in 8 of 16 cases. This effect was not necessarily correlated with the degree of disturbance or the site of the lesion. Improvement was seen even in those cases where disturbance of consciousness had been fixed over a lo

Polarity-dependent improvement of maximal-effort sprint cycling performance by direct current stimulation of the central nervous system.

Sprint motor performance, such as in short-distance running or cycling, gradually decreases after reaching a maximum speed or cadence. This may be attributed to the central nervous system. Brain stimulation studies have recently revealed the plastic nature of the human brain and spinal cord, but it is unclear how direct current stimulation (DCS) affects sprint motor performance. To address this issue, we investigated DCS's effect on healthy volunteers' sprint cycling performance. DCS was applied to the lumbar spinal cord (3mA) or the leg area of the motor cortex (2mA) for 15min with 3 differen
