Culicoides variipennis, a laboratory vector for the amazon form of Mansonella ozzardi.

The colonized midge, Culicoides variipennis, is shown to be a competent laboratory host for the Amazon form of Mansonella ozzardi. It raises the possibility that certain Culicoides spp. in the Amazon region may support development of the parasite and possibly play a role in the natural transmission cycle.

First Detection of Bluetongue Virus Type 3 in Poland in 2024-A Case Study in European Bison (Bison bonasus).

Since the emergence of serotype BTV-3, another bluetongue virus, in fall 2023, this variant has been causing great losses in livestock farming in Europe. The virus spreads faster than the epidemic BTV-8, which appeared on the continent nine years earlier. This study describes the first case of BTV-3 in Poland detected in a European bison (Bison bonasus) in Poland's Wolin National Park, approximately 15 km from the German-Polish border. The animal suffered from a severe and fatal hemorrhagic disease. The symptoms included respiratory problems, bloody diarrhea, and rapidly progressive cachexia.

Mansonella ozzardi in Haiti II. Arthropod vector studies.

The present vector studies show that the biting midge, Culicoides furens, serves as an intermediate host for Mansonella ozzardi in Haiti. A total of 3,430 C. furens were collected as they engorged on infected individuals. Under the maintenance conditions described herein, the microfilaria required 9 days to reach the infective stage. Approximately 43% of the midges survived, and from these 1,128 infective stage larvae were collected. This represents an overall infection rate of 0.76 larva per midge. Typically, there was a directly proportional relationship between the infection rate in midges

Onchocerca sweetae (Nematoda: Filarioidea): notes on the intermediate host.

Microfilariae of Onchocerca sweetae are broadly distributed in the superficial layers of the dermis of the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). A total of 2855 insects representing 20 species were collected from O. sweetae-infected bait buffaloes. Only one species, Culicoides sp. "M", ingested microfilariae from buffalo skin. Larval development of O. sweetae was observed in the thorax of this species. Atotal of 829 insects, representing 7 species and including 749 parous Culicoides spp. were collected from light and Manitoba traps. Developing filarioid larvae were observed only in Culicoides sp. "

A literature review on the role of Culicoides in the transmission of avian blood parasites in Europe.

Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) biting midges are a diverse group of insect vectors that transmit pathogens affecting humans, livestock, and wild animals. Among them, Oropouche virus, African Horse sickness virus, and bluetongue virus are the most notable pathogens. However, comparatively little is known about which Culicoides species serve as vectors of wildlife parasites affecting wild birds globally, including the malaria-like parasite of the genus Haemoproteus (Haemosporida: Haemoproteidae) and kinetoplastid Trypanosoma (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae). Beyond the direct impact of

Culicoides species community composition and feeding preferences in two aquatic ecosystems in northern Spain.

BACKGROUND: Aquatic ecosystems provide breeding sites for blood-sucking insects such as Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), but factors affecting their distribution and host choice are poorly understood. A study was undertaken at two nature reserves in northern Spain to examine the abundance, species composition, population dynamics and feeding patterns of biting midges between 2018 and 2019. METHODS: Culicoides were captured by light suction traps baited with CO2 and by sweep netting vegetation. Blood meals and species identification of blood-fed specimens were determined us

Development of Trypanosoma everetti in Culicoides biting midges.

Trypanosoma species (Trypanosomatida, Kinetoplastea) are almost exclusively heteroxenous flagellated parasites, which have been extensively studied as the causative agents of severe trypanosomiasis in humans and domestic animals. However, the biology of avian trypanosomes remains insufficiently known, particularly in wildlife, despite information that some species might be pathogenic and affect the fitness of intensively infected individuals. Avian trypanosomes are cosmopolitans. Due to regular bird seasonal migrations, this host-parasite system might provide new insight for better understandi

Culicoides Species of the Rain Forest Belt of the Littoral Region of Cameroon: Their Incrimination in the Transmission of Mansonella perstans.

Biting midges belonging to the genus Culicoides are tiny stout-shaped hematophagous insects and are thought to transmit the filarial nematode Mansonella perstans. Little is known about the Culicoides fauna in the rain forest belt of the Littoral Region of Cameroon. This study was designed to investigate the diversity, abundance and distribution of Culicoides spp. and their role as the purported vector(s) of M. perstans. Overnight light trap collections and human landing catches (HLCs) revealed eight species of Culicoides with C. grahamii being the most abundant species followed by C. milnei. F

Assessment of Leptoconops bequaerti as a potential vector of Mansonella ozzardi in Haiti.

Experimental studies in Bayeux, Haiti showed that the biting midge, Leptoconops bequaerti, is capable of supporting the complete development of Mansonella ozzardi but only on a very limited scale. This suggests that the species may not be involved in the natural transmission cycle despite its abundance and pestiferous nature in certain areas of Haiti. A midge-holding container is described which markedly enhanced the survival of engorged L. bequaerti in the laboratory.

The use of cattle to protect sheep from bluetongue infection.

Studies on the host preferences of Culicoides imicola, the vector of bluetongue virus in South Africa, are reviewed. There is agreement that this species prefers to feed on cattle but will also feed on other bovidae and sheep. Over a seven year period cattle kept near sheep on a Natal farm appear to have appreciably reduced the incidence of bluetongue in the sheep. In addition to immunization this "decoy" approach is therefore recommended to assist in the protection of stock from insect borne diseases such as bluetongue and possibly African horsesickness and Rift Valley fever.

A review of loiasis and its vectors in Gabon.

Loiasis colloquially known as tropical eye worm is a neglected tropical helminthic disease that affects the rural poor population of Gabon. A systematic review of fifty-one documents (forty-five peer reviewed papers and six dissertations) over four decades has documented many knowledge gaps on loiasis and its vectors. Higher prevalence and high microfilaremia is typical wherever Chrysops vectors occur. The two main vectors were C. silacea and C. dimidiata along with the savanna species C. longicornis . The two main vectors were only caught around forested national parks at low density (<1 Chry

Survey of infection and determination of the transmission vector of Onchocerca fasciata in camels (Camelus bactrianus) in Inner Mongolia, China.

Onchocerciasis in camels is caused by adult Onchocerca spp. and results in great economic losses to the camel industry. However, only a few studies on Onchocerca have been conducted, especially regarding the intermediate host and vector(s). In the present study, 192 camels were examined from December and January during 2013 and 2016, and the filarial larvae suspected to be Onchocerca spp. were further identified. Furthermore, aquatic dipteran insects in the living environment of camels were collected from May to September between 2013 and 2017 and dissected. Eventually, onchocercal lesions wer

Blackfly vectors of zoonotic onchocerciasis in Japan.

Studies of blackfly vectors of Onchocerca dewittei japonica Uni, Bain & Takaoka (Spirurida: Onchocercidae), a parasite of wild boar implicated in the aetiology of zoonotic onchocerciasis in Japan, and six other zoonotic Onchocerca species of this country are reviewed. Molecular identification of infective larvae found in wild-caught female blackflies showed that Simulium bidentatum (Shiraki) (Diptera: Simuliidae) is a natural vector of O. dewittei japonica, and also Onchocerca sp. sensu Fukuda et al., another parasite of wild boar. Inoculation experiments demonstrated that Simulium arakawae Ma
