A surgical case of lipoma in the cerebellopontine angle in a 37-year-old man is reported. Cerebellopontine angle lipomas are very rare lesions that differ from other intracranial lipomas in that they typically present slowly progressive focal symptoms identical to those in other tumors of this location. The patient's chief complaints were left hearing disturbance and dizzy spells. Computed tomography showed a very low density lesion (-99.3 Hounsfield units) with no enhancement in the left cerebellopontine angle. Magnetic resonance imaging (0.15T) was subsequently performed. The relative T1 wei

The authors report two cases of the microscopic total removal of meningiomas in the region of the cerebellopontine angle using the translabyrinthine approach. Although both tumors were larger than 4 cm, the only resulting neurological deficit was ipsilateral hearing loss. The translabyrinthine approach may be an alternative measure in dealing with these difficult lesions.

Of the 50 cerebellopontine angle tumors diagnosed during a three and one half year period, 36 were removed (all totally) using one of the three approaches to the cerebellopontine angle. Six patients, all elderly (over age 70) with obstructive hydrocephalus and complicating medical problems, had ventriculoperitoneal shunts inserted. One of these subsequently required tumor excision 10 months later. Of the 35 patients with normal functioning facial nerves pre-operatively, 34 (97 per cent) had the nerve spared surgically. Of 12 patients in whom hearing conservation was attempted, the cochlear ner

We present a case of a man diagnosed with a rare tumour of cerebellopontine angle-glossopharyngeal schwannoma. First symptoms started at the beginning of January 2014, patient complained of tinnitus in his right ear. He had a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and it revealed a tumour of cerebellopontine angle. The patient underwent a surgery in September 2014. In this case tinnitus was the only symptoms of glossopharyngeal schwannoma. After surgery patient suffered from hoarseness and mild difficulty in swallowing. After analyzing the available literature it turned out that the symptoms of this

Meningeal melanocytomas are uncommon intracranial tumors and extremely rare in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). The tumors are generally considered to be benign because they lack malignant features in histological examination, but several literatures describe malignant behavior of the tumors such as high frequency of local recurrence, malignant transformation with leptomeningeal seeding. We describe a case of meningeal melanocytoma in the CPA and discuss the features of the tumor. The case was a 43-year-old woman with a right CPA exta-axial mass suffering from vertigo and nausea. Computed tom

A 46-year-old man presented with a left cerebellopontine angle lipoma of unusual size. The patient also complained of hearing loss and left trigeminal neuralgia, which were triggered on the same side as the lesion in the resting posture. Surgical treatment with simple debridement of the arachnoid membranes to reduce internal tension in the tumour resulted in stable pain remission and hypoacusia without additional deficit.

The transotic approach to the cerebellopontine angle has been developed at the University of Zurich for the removal of acoustic tumors in an effort to increase operative exposure and enhance facial nerve preservation and reconstruction. Key steps involve the total removal of all pneumatic cell tracts with middle ear and eustachian tube obliteration, followed by complete otic capsule removal for tumor exposure. This article discusses the advantages, disadvantages, and technique of this approach.

Although vestibular schwannoma is a common tumor in the cerebellopontine angle, calcified vestibular schwannoma is rare. A 59-year-old woman with sudden onset epileptic seizures, was referred to Hokkaido Neurosurgical Memorial Hospital. Neurological examination revealed left Bruns nystagmus, left deafness and left cerebellar ataxia. Brain MRI revealed a mass, about 3cm in diameter, in the left cerebellopontine angle. The mass showed heterogeneous intensity on T1- and T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images. Hydrocephalus was seen. On CT scan, the tumor was calcified.

To probe the feasibility and utility of neuroendoscopic inspection of the anatomy of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and of neuroendoscopic assisted microneurosurgery (NEAMN) for CPA lesions via a retrosigmoid approach, we used retrosigmoid NEAMN in 28 patients with CPA lesions. Prior to this, we undertook anatomical observation of bilateral CPA in two adult cadaver heads using the neuroendoscope. NEAMN tumour resection was performed in eight acoustic neuromas, one meningioma and 14 cholesteatomas and NEAMN vascular decompression was performed in five patients with trigeminal neuralgia. Both

The cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is a rare site for the growth of choroid plexus papilloma (CPP). The clinicoradiological diagnosis of this tumor in the CPA is difficult because of the nonspecific clinical presentation and radiological features. Five cases of choriod plexus papilloma (3 males, 2 females) operated upon at this center are reviewed. All the cases were operated upon by retromastoid suboccipital craniectomy. As they all presented with a typical CPA syndrome without any distinctive radiological feature, a clinicoradiological diagnosis of CPP could not be reached in any of these. The

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the risks and benefits of the surgical treatment for cerebellopontine angle meningioma.
METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with cerebellopontine angle meningioma treated surgically in the last twenty years were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were followed up from six months to eleven years.
RESULTS: Complete resection was done in 68 (77.3%) patients and subtotal resection in the rest 20 patients. Six(6.8%) patients died after the operation. Follow up showed that eight (13.3%) patients died and six (10%) patients developed recurrence.
CONCLUSION: Surgery is the trea

Lipoma of the cerebellopontine angle is a very rare tumor. We report the case of a 14-years-old female, with left side deafness during three years, associated with headache. CT scan showed an hypodense mass, without enhancement at the cerebellopontine angle. The patient was treated surgically by left retrosigmoid approach. The lesion involved the eighth and seventh cranial nerves and only a partial removal was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful. She had no more headache; the deafness of the left side remained unchanged. Asymptomatic lipoma of the cerebellopontine angle can be t

Owing to distal light and panoramic view, the endoscope expands the view inside the cerebellopontine angle without touching the cerebellum or the brain stem and allows clear identification of the vascular and nervous components crossing the cerebellopontine angle. Using a retrosigmoid approach with a combined surgical and endoscopic procedure, the surgeon gets more accurate information to visualize the adjacent structures to a small acoustic neuroma, to check the lateral part of the internal auditory canal, and to locate a vasculonervous cross-conflict. In the future, an endoscopic vestibular

52 patients with non-acoustic neurinoma tumors of the cerebellopontine angle undergoing surgery over a 16 year period (1974-1989) are analyzed with regard to epidemiologic factors, presenting symptoms, neurological findings, diagnostic procedures, surgical approaches, recurrences, and longterm survival rates. Meningiomas (20 cases) and epidermoid tumors (16 cases) outnumber the rare tumors which exhibit wide histological variation. Trigeminal neuralgia was found as a significantly frequent sign of epidermoids. Total removal was possible in nine meningiomas (45%), fourteen epidermoid tumors (87

This article presents a case study of a 7-year-old female patient with a history of acute myelogenous leukemia, previously treated with chemotherapy. The patient developed acute right peripheral facial paralysis and right upper limb weakness, leading to the discovery of an extra-axial solid lesion at the right cerebellopontine angle. This lesion extended into adjacent structures with notable contrast enhancement and restricted diffusion on magnetic resonance imaging, indicative of chloroma, an extramedullary solid mass composed of myeloid precursor cells. The article discusses the clinical pre

Introduction Large and even moderate sized, extra-axial cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors may fill this restricted space and distort the regional anatomy. It may be difficult to determine even with high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) if the tumor is dural-based, or what the nerve of origin is if a schwannoma. While clinical history and exam are helpful, they are not unequivocal, particularly since many patients present with a myriad of symptoms, or conversely an incidental finding. We present an atypical appearing, asymptomatic CPA tumor, ultimately identified at surgery to be

BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastomas are the most common primary tumor of the posterior fossa. There are few cases of hemangioblastoma of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). When present in this location, hemangioblastoma presents a diagnostic challenge as its imaging findings closely resemble those of vestibular schwannoma (VS), which is much more common in the CPA.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 42-year-old man presenting with vertigo and diplopia found to have a CPA tumor with imaging resembling VS. He underwent retrosigmoidal resection of his tumor, which was found to be a hemangioblast

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and cerebellomedullary fissure (CMF) tumors are rare in children and information is scarce in the literature. This retrospective study reports their histological distribution and tumor origin, and describes surgical resections and post-operative outcome based upon the authors' consecutive personal series.
METHODS: Clinical data of infants and children 16 years old or younger of age treated from 2001 to 2012 by a single surgeon was retrospectively reviewed. All had histologically verified CPA/CMF tumors and underwent radical tumor resection through crani
