Structural and effective brain connectivity underlying biological motion detection.

The perception of actions underwrites a wide range of socio-cognitive functions. Previous neuroimaging and lesion studies identified several components of the brain network for visual biological motion (BM) processing, but interactions among these components and their relationship to behavior remain little understood. Here, using a recently developed integrative analysis of structural and effective connectivity derived from high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we assess the cerebro-cerebellar network for processing of camouflaged p

Theory of mind profile and cerebellar alterations in remitted bipolar disorder 1 and 2: a comparison study.

The literature on social cognition abilities in bipolar disorder (BD) is controversial about the occurrence of theory of mind (ToM) alterations. In addition to other cerebral structures, such as the frontal and limbic areas, the processing of socially relevant stimuli has also been attributed to the cerebellum, which has been demonstrated to be involved in the above-mentioned disorder. Nevertheless, the cerebellar contribution to ToM deficits in bipolar patients needs to be elucidated further. To this aim, two tests assessing different components of ToM were used to evaluate the ability to app

The burden of microstructural damage modulates cortical activation in elderly subjects with MCI and leuko-araiosis. A DTI and fMRI study.

The term leuko-araiosis (LA) describes a common chronic affection of the cerebral white matter (WM) in the elderly due to small vessel disease with variable clinical correlates. To explore whether severity of LA entails some adaptive reorganization in the cerebral cortex we evaluated with functional MRI (fMRI) the cortical activation pattern during a simple motor task in 60 subjects with mild cognitive impairment and moderate or severe (moderate-to-severe LA group, n = 46) and mild (mild LA group, n = 14) LA extension on visual rating. The microstructural damage associated with LA was measured

Cerebellar-cortical function and connectivity during sensorimotor behavior in aging FMR1 gene premutation carriers.

INTRODUCTION: Premutation carriers of the FMR1 gene are at risk of developing fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), a neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor, cognitive, and psychiatric decline as well as cerebellar and cerebral white matter pathology. Several studies have documented preclinical sensorimotor issues in aging premutation carriers, but the extent to which sensorimotor brain systems are affected and may represent early indicators of atypical neurodegeneration has not been determined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen healthy controls and 16 FMR1 premutation

Stage-dependent cerebrocerebellar communication during sensorimotor processing.

Cerebral cortex and cerebellum are essential for sensorimotor control, but the dynamics of their interactions remain unclear. Here, we investigated which pathways prevail during preparation and execution of spontaneous whisker movements in mice. During preparation, neuronal activity of primary motor (M1) and somatosensory (S1) cortex precede that of cerebellar crus regions, with a lead that is consistent with relaying a copy of motor commands. After movement onset, the phase of the signal inverts, indicating a dominant vector signaling from cerebellum to cerebrum. At this stage, Purkinje cell

Visual pontocerebellar projections in the macaque.

The cerebellum plays an important role in the visual guidance of movement. In order to understand the anatomical basis of visuomotor control, we studied the projection of pontine visual cells onto the cerebellar cortex of monkeys. Wheat germ agglutinin horseradish peroxidase was injected into the dorsolateral pons two monkeys. Retrogradely labelled cells were mapped in the cerebral cortex and superior colliculus, and orthogradely labelled fibers in the cerebellar cortex. The largest number of retrogradely labelled cells in the cerebral cortex was in a group of medial extrastriate visual areas.

Suspected maternal infanticide in a case of hydranencephaly.

A medico-legal autopsy case of hydranencephaly in a male infant which was first suspected of maternal infanticide is reported. The infant was 48 cm in height, weighed 2.86 kg and the circumference of the head, the chest and the abdomen was 32.2 cm, 31.0 cm and 30.4 cm, respectively, with no deformities of the head or body. Autopsy examination, however, revealed a severe defect in the central nervous system. The cranial cavity was filled with a cloudy dark red fluid (ca. 310 ml) instead of the cerebral hemispheres. The residual central nervous tissues were mostly subtentorial structures from th

The Kinetics of Transtentorial Brain Herniation: Kernohan-Woltman Notch Phenomenon Revisited.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To critically review recent literature in understanding the pathological consequences of transtentorial brain herniation resulting from unilateral expanding supratentorial mass lesions. RECENT FINDINGS: Modern neuroimaging assists in understanding the consequences of transtentorial brain herniation with the development of the Kernohan-Woltman notch phenomenon. MRI studies in post-operative patients undergoing craniotomy and removal of expanding unilateral hemispheric mass lesions (usually an extradural or subdural hematoma) have shown striking findings in the contralateral

Assessing the link between cerebellar volume and cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease: a pilot study.

The cerebellum, long recognized for its role in motor functions, has become increasingly acknowledged for its involvement in a broader spectrum of cognitive functions. Given the cerebellum's strong neuronal connections with cerebral regions affected by neurodegenerative diseases, this study investigated the cerebellar contribution to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study retrospectively analysed 127 individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD, n = 46), mild cognitive impairment due to AD (MCI, n = 24), and AD dementia (ADD, n = 57). Grey and white matter volumes of t

Disynaptic cerebrocerebellar pathways originating from multiple functionally distinct cortical areas.

The cerebral cortex and cerebellum both play important roles in sensorimotor processing, however, precise connections between these major brain structures remain elusive. Using anterograde mono-trans-synaptic tracing, we elucidate cerebrocerebellar pathways originating from primary motor, sensory, and association cortex. We confirm a highly organized topography of corticopontine projections in mice; however, we found no corticopontine projections originating from primary auditory cortex and detail several potential extra-pontine cerebrocerebellar pathways. The cerebellar hemispheres were the m

Cerebellar BOLD signal during the acquisition of a new lexicon predicts its early consolidation.

Cerebellar contributions to language are presently poorly understood, but it has been argued that the cerebellar role in motor learning can be extended to learning in cognitive and linguistic domains. Here, we used fMRI to investigate whether the cerebellum is recruited in mapping novel words onto existing semantic concepts. On separate days, participants performed a Basque vocabulary learning task and a control English synonym task in the MRI scanner. Learning-related BOLD activity was found in left inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral insula, pre-SMA, left superior parietal cortex, right caudat

Brain structural damage in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2. A voxel-based morphometry study.

Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) enables an unbiased in-vivo whole-brain quantitative analysis of differences in gray matter (GM), white matter (WM) and cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) volumes. We assessed with VBM 20 spinocerebellar ataxia Type 2 (SCA2) patients with mild or moderate cerebellar deficit and 20 age and sex-matched healthy controls. SCA2 patients showed a significant (P < 0.05 corrected for multiple comparison) symmetric loss of GM in the cerebellar vermis and hemispheres sparing lobules I,II, Crus II,VII, and X, and of the WM in the peridentate region, middle cerebellar peduncles, dors

The middle perforated substance of the diencephalon.

The diencephalon, upper brain stem and other basal brain structures are supplied chiefly by penetrating branches of the cerebral arteries. We examined the retrochiasmatic space between the superior border of the pons and posterior edge of the optic chiasm in six randomly selected adult fresh brain specimens. Lateral or anterolateral to the mamillary bodies, two small quadrangular spaces (2.5 x 3.5 mm) were found that were limited laterally by the junction of the optic tract and crus cerebri. These spaces were pierced on each side by 1 to 5 small penetrating branches (premamillary arterial comp

Temporal dynamics between the whisker sensorimotor cortex and the olivocerebellar module in awake mice.

INTRODUCTION: The precise timing of the long-range bidirectional connections between the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum remains a critical factor in elucidating their respective and integrated functions. The key role of the cerebellum in both motor and non-motor domains is exerted through numerous cerebro-cerebellar closed loops that sustain different forms of motor coordination, in which the response timing of the various types of cerebellar neurons may constitute a significant component of neural computation. METHODS: In this study, we investigated the cerebral sensorimotor cortex and t

[Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus Associated with Theophylline: A Case Report].

An 87-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of speech disturbance and right facio-pharyngo-glosso-masticatory diplegia. She had bronchial asthma, was previously diagnosed with cerebral infarction, had experienced two events of convulsive status epilepticus, and was undergoing treatment with theophylline, levetiracetam, and clopidogrel. Head diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed a high-signal area in the left crus posterior capsula interna. For this, we administered cilostazol along with her regular medicines. On day 14, she had tonic-clonic convulsions, extending
