OBJECTIVE: Pseudotumor cerebri is a disorder of intracranial dynamics characterized by elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) and chronic cerebral venous hypertension without structural abnormalities. A perplexing feature of pseudotumor is the absence of the ventriculomegaly found in obstructive hydrocephalus, although both diseases are associated with increased resistance to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) resorption. Traditionally, the pathophysiology of ventricular dilation and obstructive hydrocephalus has been attributed to the backup of CSF due to impaired absorption, and it is unclear why backu

BACKGROUND: This study explored whether assessment of the cerebral ventricular size (or changes in size) by cranial computed tomography (CT) … and the measures of ICP in the 184 cases. There was a weak relationship between changes in size of cerebral ventricles and changes in ICP in the 31 cases examined twice.
INTERPRETATION: The present results suggest that actual size or changes in size of the cerebral ventricles were no reliable predictors of ICP or changes in ICP, suggesting that great caution should …

The highest points of the subependymal veins of the lateral cerebral ventricles (frontal horn, body and atrium) and the height of the body have been evaluated in selected patients. Through a statistical analysis, they have been demonstrated to depend on the height of the supratentorial compartment of the skull. Taking into account this relation, the results obtained furnish reliable criteria for evaluating ventricular enlargement or sectional deformity.

1. In unanaesthetized cats intraventricular injections of 2.5-10 mug nicotine produced blinking, narrowing of the palpebral fissures, retching, vomiting and asynchronous twitching of the ears. With larger doses (30-100 mug) the ear twitching was interrupted for a short time by laying back of the ears. Respiration first became laboured and deep, then rapid and shallow following which panting occurred. There was salivation, loud calling, micturition and defaecation. With still larger doses (300-1000 mug) there was torticollis, ataxia and blind charging sometimes followed by a clonic-tonic convul

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular hemorrhaging (IVH) within cerebral lateral ventricles affects 20-30% of very low birth weight infants (<1500 g). As the ventricles increase in size, the intracranial pressure increases, leading to post-hemorrhagic ventricle dilatation (PHVD), an abnormal enlargement of the head. The most widely used imaging tool for measuring IVH and PHVD is cranial two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound (US). Estimating volumetric changes over time with 2D US is unreliable due to high user variability when locating the same anatomical location at different scanning sessions. Compared to

PURPOSE: To retrospectively analyze hydrocephalus and lateral ventricular asymmetry by measuring the midline shift, Evans index, right and left semi-Evans index, Right and left semi-callosal angles, superior ophthalmic vein (SOV) diameters, and to compare these findings with the control group.
METHODS: The study included 93 cases with hydrocephalus, 80 cases with asymmetrical lateral ventricles (ALV) and 83 control cases with normal findings who had cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in our institute between the years 2011 and 2016. A senior and junior radiologist analyzed the images an

This paper reviews the early history of brain localization of function. It analyses the doctrines professed in ancient times by philosophers and physicians, who believed that brain functions were carried out in the cerebral ventricles by the psychic pneuma, or animal spirit, a sort of special and light substance endowed with the power to perform sensory, motor and mental activities. This theory, conceived in the Classic Age and called "ventricular-pneumatic doctrine", evolved in the 4th-5th centuries A.D. into the "three-cell theory", according to which each cerebral ventricle was the seat of …

This work presents a possible method of overcoming difficulties arising during the recording of intracranial pressure (ICP) from the cerebral ventricles of patients suffering from head injuries or intracranial space occupying lesions. The main difficulties in obtaining these measurements are the risk of infection and measurement errors caused by artefacts from head movements. These two problems arise when a cannula inserted into the cerebral ventricle is connected outside the skull to an external transducer measuring pressure. We propose a method utilizing a modified flushing shunt connected t…

1. The cardiovascular and behavioural effects of cholinomimetic drugs injected through a cannula chronically implanted into a lateral cerebral ventricle were examined in unanaesthetized dogs.2. Acetylcholine (ACh) (10-20 mug) produced an increase in arterial pressure and heart rate, the dogs became more alert, moved their heads, licked and swallowed and then became drowsy.3. The responses to ACh were potentiated by intraventricular physostigmine (5 mug), were abolished by intraventricular atropine (100 mug) but were unaffected by intraventricular mecamylamine (250 mug). The responses to ACh we

1. The effects of bradykinin (1-5 mug) injected into the cannulated lateral cerebral ventricles were studied in unanaesthetized rabbits before and after intravenous atropine, diphemanil and morphine.2. The intraventricular injections of bradykinin produced a short-lasting phase of behavioural excitation with vocalization followed by sedation. The behavioural excitation was associated with desynchronization in the electrocorticogram (e.co.g.), bradycardia and hypotension followed by tachycardia and hypertension. Tachypnoea was also observed. The subsequent phase of sedation was more prolonged a…

The author presents a case of epidermal cyst of the third ventricle in a female aged 19 years with dramatically rapidly increasing clinical symptoms. Surgical removal of the tumour gave full success and complete cure of the patient.

An extremely rare tumor of the III brain ventricle, a squamous cell papilloma, in a man of 49 is described. The localization of the neoplasia without any topical association with the vascular plexus confirms the opinion that squamous cell papilloma of the III ventricle belongs to the group of craniopharyngiomas.
