Primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the cerebrum: a histological and immunohistochemical study of 10 cases.

Four males and 6 females, 5-66 (mean 27) years, with supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) have been treated in one center in a 5-year period. Symptoms and signs had been present from 4 days to 8 years and were highly variable. The frontal hemisphere was involved in 6 cases. Seven patients have died but with a combination of surgery and radiotherapy 3 patients have survived 20 months or longer. All tumors were composed of rounded, hyperchromatic undifferentiated cells but there were focal areas of astrocytic (5 cases), mesenchymal (4 cases) or neuronal differentiation (1 case

Inhibition by chlorpromazine of thyroxine modulation of flavin metabolism in liver, cerebrum and cerebellum.

In livers of adult rats that have been treated with thyroxine, the rate of incorporation of radiolabeled riboflavin into both flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and FAD covalently attached to specific apoflavoenzymes was enhanced markedly. By contrast, thyroxine diminished riboflavin incorporation into FAD in cerebrum and cerebellum but continued to enhance incorporation into the covalently bound fraction of FAD. Diminished net incorporation of riboflavin into FAD in brains of adult rats may reflect increased utilization of this fraction for covalent attachment into specific apoflavoenzymes rat

Cystic tumors of the fetal and neonatal cerebrum: ultrasound and computed tomographic evaluation.

Three patients (two infants and one fetus) had complex (partially cystic and partially solid) supratentorial tumors involving the brain. The sonographic and computed tomographic appearance in each of these lesions is described and discussed. The cystic component of each lesion was equally well delineated by the two modalities, whereas the peripheral solid component was better defined by contrast-enhanced computed tomographic scans.

Infarction and circulation in cerebrum. Effect of recanalization and/or collateral circulation on the lesion and prognosis.

Findings of computed tomography (CT) and angiography in supratentorial cerebral infarction associated with complete stroke were compared with regard to prognosis. It was found that the extent of low-density areas on CT was perfectly in accordance with the areas of occluded arteries on angiograms. However, the low-density areas on CT were always smaller than the areas involved angiographically when early recanalization and/or collateral circulation were carried out within 2 to 3 days of onset. It was also found that smaller low-density areas only had favorable effect. We concluded that the prog

Arteriolosclerosis in CNS Tissues Outside the Cerebrum and Late-Life Motor Impairment.

BACKGROUND: The pathological basis underlying motor impairment in older adults is partially accounted for by Alzheimer disease and related dementias pathologies. We tested the hypothesis that arteriolosclerosis, a pathological correlate of small vessel disease, outside the cerebrum is related to motor impairment in older adults above and beyond Alzheimer disease and related dementias pathologies. METHODS: The data were from decedents of a community-based clinical-autopsy study. Arteriolosclerosis was assessed in the cerebrum (as 1 of 10 Alzheimer disease and related dementias pathologies), mi

Multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor of the cerebrum: Two cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor (MVNT) recently described as a purely neuronal tumor. Although its nature as a genuine tumor is controversial, this new entity assumed benign lesion and mostly affecting adults. Herein, we introduce two cases of MVNT presumed low grade glial tumor (LGG) and focal cortical dyplasia (FCD) as a differential diagnosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: Case 1 has admitted to our hospital with headache which frequency and severity has increased within two months. Radiological examination revealed hyperintensity on T2-WI and T2 FLAIR images. Microsurgical res

A Connectomic Atlas of the Human Cerebrum-Chapter 2: The Lateral Frontal Lobe.

In this supplement, we show a comprehensive anatomic atlas of the human cerebrum demonstrating all 180 distinct regions comprising the cerebral cortex. The location, functional connectivity, and structural connectivity of these regions are outlined, and where possible a discussion is included of the functional significance of these areas. In part 2, we specifically address regions relevant to the lateral frontal lobe.

Selenomethionine protects against neuronal degeneration by methylmercury in the developing rat cerebrum.

Although many experimental studies have shown that selenium protects against methylmercury (MeHg) toxicity at different end points, the direct interactive effects of selenium and MeHg on neurons in the brain remain unknown. Our goal is to confirm the protective effects of selenium against neuronal degeneration induced by MeHg in the developing postnatal rat brain using a postnatal rat model that is suitable for extrapolating the effects of MeHg to the fetal brain of humans. As an exposure source of selenium, we used selenomethionine (SeMet), a food-originated selenium. Wistar rats of postnatal

Age-related lesions in the cerebrum in middle-aged female cynomolgus monkeys.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) in humans is a progressive neurogenic disease that can be linked with such characteristic pathological findings in the cerebrum as senile plaques (SPs), neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), and neuronal loss. In the present study, the authors investigated the age-related morphological changes in 12 middle-aged and 12 young cynomolgus monkeys. Low numbers of neurons and astrocytes in the hippocampal region in cynomolgus monkeys accompanied ageing, and there was a high number of microglial cells; however, no clearly neurotoxic abnormalities

Mercapturate metabolism of 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal in rat and human cerebrum.

4-Hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE), a potent toxin formed in the brain from oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, is increased in Alzheimer disease (AD), where it is a proposed effector of amyloid beta peptide-mediated neurotoxicity. Detoxification of HNE via the mercapturic acid pathway (MAP) is the primary means by which other organs, such as liver, limit its toxic effects. Here we examined the distribution and activity of MAP detoxification for HNE in cerebrum. Our results showed that rat cerebral cortex and especially synaptosomes were less well equipped to detoxify HNE via the MAP than liver.

Proliferation of astroglia from the adult human cerebrum is inhibited by ethanol in vitro.

Chronic alcoholism is associated with atrophy of the adult brain, while fetal exposure to ethanol can cause microencephaly. Since astroglial pathology is a common feature of ethanol exposure in both humans and animal models, the direct influence of ethanol on proliferation of human astroglia from the gray and white matter of adult temporal lobe was determined and compared. Astroglial cultures were exposed to constant concentrations of ethanol at realistic social and clinical levels (0.1, 0.2 or 0.5%; w/v) for 1 to 5 days. Proliferation was quantified by bromodeoxyuridine labeling and enumerati

Differential sequestration of parasitized erythrocytes in the cerebrum and cerebellum in human cerebral malaria.

Sequestration of parasitized red blood cells (PRBC) in the microvessels results in impairment of microcirculation with organ dysfunction in complicated human Plasmodium falciparum malaria. In cerebral malaria patients, the percentage of small blood vessels with PRBC sequestration is higher in the brain than in other organs. The clinical severity of cerebral malaria depends on the level of PRBC sequestration in the brain. In our study, postmortem samples from cerebrum and cerebellum of 16 patients who died of P. falciparum malaria were examined and compared using light microscopy. In the cerebe

[Symmetrical cortical calcification of the cerebrum following pre-natal encephalitis (author's transl)].

Purely cortical cerebral calcification without involvement of the cerebellum was observed radiologically in a 3-month old girl; the calcification was extensive and symmetrical. During a three year period of observation, she showed severe psychomotor retardation, spasticity, microcephaly, a secondary scoliosis, subluxation of the hips and fits. These changes have only been observed so far following pre-natal herpes encephalitis. Following this condition there may also be periventricular calcification. Therefore it is assumed that the extensive cortical calcification is due to a virus, but not n

Extensive demyelinating change in cerebrum after a total knee replacement -A case report-.

Demyelination is characterized by the loss of myelin with the preservation of axons. Demyelinating diseases can be classified into several categories: demyelination due to inflammation, viral infection, osmotic derangements and hypoxic ischemia. In particular, osmotic myelinolysis is representative, and is associated with hyperosmolality, hypokalemia or rapid correction of hyponatremia. Osmotic myelinolysis was reported to be associated with underlying conditions, such as alcoholism, diuretics and malnutrition. A 67-year-old woman with hypertension was scheduled to undergo both total knee repl

[In utero ethanol exposure alters the mitochondrial protein expression of fetal mouse cerebrum].

OBJECTIVE: To probe the effect of prenatal ethanol exposure on the mitochondrial protein expression in fetal mouse cerebrum. METHODS: Pregnant CD-1 mice were given 5.0 g/kg ethanol intragastrically from pregnant days (PD) 6-15. Fetal cerebral mitochondria were isolated on PD 18. The overall mitochondrial protein was applied to two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Differentially expressed protein spots were cut off and identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. Sodium, ATP, and intracellular pH transients during reversible complete ischemia of dog cerebrum.

We tested the hypotheses that with the onset of cerebral ischemia, massive cellular sodium influx does not occur until adenosine triphosphate is fully depleted and that on reperfusion, neuronal sodium efflux does not occur until adenosine triphosphate is fully restored. We examined the temporal relationships among transcellular sodium, energy metabolism, and intracellular pH with sodium and phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy in a new, hemodynamically stable, brain stem-sparing model of reversible, complete cerebral ischemia in eight anesthetized dogs. A case report of CIC-rearranged undifferentiated small round cell sarcoma in the cerebrum.

CIC-rearranged undifferentiated small round cell sarcoma (CIC-rearranged USRCS) is a recently established type of Ewing-like small round cell sarcomas, characterized by CIC gene rearrangement, most commonly CIC-DUX4 fusion. This report presents the second case of CIC-rearranged USRCS arising primarily in the cerebrum. A 64-year-old otherwise healthy woman presented with a 1 × 1 cm sized hemorrhagic subcortical tumor in the left temporo-parietal lobe. The tumor repeatedly recurred, and the patient underwent three surgeries, chemotherapy with doxorubicin and ifosfamide, and radiotherapy, as well

MRI-based morphometric characterizations of sexual dimorphism of the cerebrum of ferrets (Mustela putorius).

The present study aimed to characterize cerebral morphology in young adult ferrets and its sexual dimorphism using high-field MRI and MRI-based morphometry. Ex vivo short TR/TE (typical T1-weighted parameter setting for conventional MRI) and T2W (long TR/TE) MRI with high spatial resolution at 7-tesla could visualize major subcortical and archicortical structures, i.e., the caudate nucleus, lentiform nucleus, amygdala and hippocampus. In particular, laminar organization of the olfactory bulb was identifiable by short TR/TE-MRI. The primary and secondary sulci observable in the adult ferret wer

Biochemical and morphological effects of fumonisin B(1) on primary cultures of rat cerebrum.

Chronic dietary consumption of the mycotoxin fumonisin B(1) (FB(1)) is associated with leukoencephalomalacia and neuronal degeneration, but identification of the cellular mechanisms underlying this neurotoxicity is difficult due to concurrent adverse systemic changes. For this reason, the present investigation used an in vitro approach to assess the short-term consequences of direct FB(1) (0. 5-75 microM) exposure on astrocytes and oligodendrocytes in primary cultures of rat cerebrum. Beginning at 5 days in vitro, the cultures were exposed to FB(1) at five concentrations (0.5-75 microM), and t

[A case of chronic toluene intoxication with atrophy of cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem on CT and MRI].

A 28-year-old man developed neurological disorders consisting of cerebellar symptoms and dementia over a period of 8 years of inhalation of toluene. He also developed bilateral optic atrophy. CT scan and MRI revealed atrophy of cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The severity of neurological symptoms corresponded with the findings of CT and MRI. Furthermore, MRI (T2) showed reduced signal intensity in bilateral thalamus. This patient was also admitted to another hospital 2.5 years ago. Compared with the previous findings, present examinations showed significant progress of the atrophy of cereb
