Issues using linkage of hospital records and death certificate data to determine the size of a potential palliative care population.

BACKGROUND: Studies aiming to identify palliative care populations have used data from death certificates and in some cases hospital records. The size and characteristics of the identified populations can show considerable variation depending on the data sources used. It is important that service planners and researchers are aware of this. AIM: To illustrate the differences in the size and characteristics of a potential palliative care population depending on the differential use of linked hospital records and death certificate data. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS:

Long-term care needs and service use in terminally ill patients with cancer: a nationwide claims data study.

BACKGROUND: Terminally ill patients with cancer may have difficulty using Japan's public long-term care insurance system because functional decline often occurs rapidly near death. We examined care-need levels, service use, and factors associated with timely service use in this population. METHODS: We used anonymized long-term care insurance claims data from January 2018 to August 2025. Patients who died of cancer and whose first observed certification was granted within 1 year before death were included. Certification levels, certification period, and service use were described. Logistic reg

Absence from work and the medical sickness certificate.

Internet and dematerialization have greatly facilitated the medical profession. Contractual physicians and national health service doctors now have efficient tools for the electronic management of their routine administrative workload. A recent innovation is the medical sickness certificate issued by primary care providers and national health service physicians. Following postponements and uncertainties, procedures for the electronic completion and online transmission of the sickness certificate are now complete. The changes introduced by the so-called "Brunetta decree", however, have made its

Attitudes toward certification. A pilot study.

The CNOR certification is a voluntary commitment that individual perioperative nurses make after considering financial, professional, and personal issues. The results of this survey indicate that CNOR certification is sought to fulfill personal and professional goals. A vital component in the delivery of quality perioperative patient care is the individual nurse. This is true whether or not the perioperative nurse is certified. One question is the value of the CNOR process in the validation of nurses for the delivery of perioperative patient care. It is easy to assume that if knowledge is pres

Validity of maternal and perinatal risk factors reported on fetal death certificates.

We sought to estimate the accuracy, relative to maternal medical records, of perinatal risk factors recorded on fetal death certificates. We conducted a validation study of fetal death certificates among women who experienced fetal deaths between 1996 and 2001. The number of previous births, established diabetes, chronic hypertension, maternal fever, performance of autopsy, anencephaly, and Down syndrome had very high accuracy, while placental cord conditions and other chromosomal abnormalities were reported inaccurately. Additional population-based studies are needed to identify strategies to

Oculocutaneous albinism in a rural community of South Africa: a population genetic study.

Oculocutaneous albinism type II (OCA2), the most common form of albinism worldwide, is prevalent throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The hypopigmentory phenotype distinguishes affected individuals as 'different' in a black population, resulting in problems of social acceptance and integration. Health issues include constant, lifelong sun-induced skin damage and poor vision. This study determined the frequency and distribution of albinism among the Vhavenda ethnic group living in the relatively low-income north of South Africa in a clan-oriented society. A retrospective study of birth records from r
