The analgesic effects of bilateral superficial cervical plexus block in thyroid surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Thyroid surgery is moderately painful, and many techniques to reduce postoperative pain have been studied. Regional techniques are a part of multimodal analgesia employed for various surgical cases. Bilateral superficial cervical plexus block (BSCPB) is a commonly used regional anaesthesia technique for analgesia for thyroid surgery. A previous meta-analysis by this group had left questions about some facets of the technique, to which further trials have contributed. METHODS: The systematic review and meta-analysis was registered on the International Prospective Register

The superficial cervical plexus block for postoperative pain therapy in carotid artery surgery. A prospective randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Rapid and reliable neurological evaluation soon after carotid artery surgery is feasible with modern methods of general anesthesia, but postoperative pain therapy remains a challenge. Use of opioids can mask neurological deficits. We investigated whether superficial cervical plexus block reduced postoperative opioid consumption after carotid endarterectomy. DESIGN: Prospective, randomised, double-blinded, placebo controlled trial. METHODS: 46 patients undergoing unilateral carotid endarterectomy under general anesthesia were randomized to either superficial cervical block with ro

Superficial and deep cervical plexus blocks versus patient-controlled analgesia in total laryngectomy; a randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: The cervical plexus block (CPB) delivers analgesia for surgeries in the head and neck . Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) has been utilized to enhance pain management. This study evaluates combined bilateral superficial and deep CPB versus PCA in postoperative pain management after total laryngectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Randimized two equal groups: the CPB group (n = 25), who received combined bilateral US-guided superficial and deep CBP, and the PCA group (n = 25), who received PCA. The primary outcome was postoperative visual analog scale (VAS) . The secondary outcomes we

Effect of Ropivacaine in Combined Costoclavicular Brachial Plexus - Cervical Plexus Blocks on Hemidiaphragmatic Paralysis for Humeral Fracture Surgery: A Prospective Single - Centre Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The brachial plexus block is conducive to providing postoperative analgesia for patients with humeral fractures. The commonly used brachial plexus block techniques have a high incidence rate of hemidiaphragmatic paralysis (HDP), which may lead to respiratory problems. The combined costoclavicular brachial plexus - cervical plexus blocks (CCB-CPBs) had demonstrated favorable analgesic effects and had reduced the incidence of HDP in shoulder surgeries. However, the clinical experience regarding CCB-CPBs is rather limited. Consequently, our study aims to evaluate its various effects,

Intermediate Cervical Plexus Block for Refractory Bilateral Facial Pain From a Whiplash Injury in 3 Patients: A Case Report.

Bilateral facial pain is associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction and rarely, trigeminal neuralgia. In the absence of clinical and radiological signs, a diagnosis of persistent idiopathic facial pain is often made. Standard management of persistent idiopathic facial pain includes pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy with variable therapeutic efficacy. Whiplash can result in persistent facial pain although its clinical presentation and management are poorly defined. This report includes 3 patients with refractory bilateral facial pain. A detailed review of history revealed whiplash befo

The analgesic efficacy of bilateral superficial cervical plexus block for thyroid surgery under general anesthesia: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Uses of simple analgesics were found insufficient to manage pain after thyroid surgery. We hypothesized that using bilateral superficial cervical plexus block (BSCPB) might influence the pattern of immediate postoperative pain and analgesic consumption. The general objective of the study was to assess the analgesic efficacy of bilateral superficial plexus block for thyroid surgery under general anesthesia. RESULTS: A total of 74 willing patients involved. Half of them had received BSCPB with 10 ml of 0.25% bupivacaine just before induction and the remaining half did not. Postoperat

Efficacy of a Superficial Cervical Plexus Block as an Alternative to General Anesthesia for Mandibular and Perimandibular Surgical Procedures: A Systematic Review.

Any oral and maxillofacial surgery often requires reliable anesthesia to ensure analgesia, patient comfort, and surgical efficiency. While general anesthesia is the traditional choice, it carries risks of cardiopulmonary complications, prolonged recovery, and higher resource utilization. A superficial cervical plexus block has emerged as a potential alternative, offering simplicity, safety, and cost-effectiveness. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the superficial cervical plexus block as an alternative to general anesthesia in mandibular and perimandibular, or

Superficial Cervical Plexus Block in Selective Cases of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as an Alternative to General Anesthesia: A Case Presentation.

The superficial cervical plexus block (SCPB) is well acknowledged, accepted for regional anesthetic for the submandibular area, neck region, and ear lobe. It is a possible valuable anesthetic technique in individuals to be operated on with conditions such as ear lobe lacerations, submandibular abscesses, and trauma to the mandibular or the neck region. Its application in oral and maxillofacial surgery is for various surgical procedures in the peri-mandibular area, excision of superficial lesions in the mandibular, ear lobe, neck region, and suturing of the skin in the corresponding region. Comparison of Superficial Cervical Plexus Block and Intravenous Morphine for Analgesia in Tympanomastoid Surgeries: A Randomized Double-Blind Control Trial.

Background and aims Superficial cervical plexus block (SCPB) has been indicated for many neck surgeries including thyroid surgery, carotid endarterectomy, clavicular surgeries, and cochlear implantation, but has not been used perioperatively to provide analgesia for otological surgeries. We hypothesized that the use of this block is not inferior to the use of intravenous morphine for postoperative analgesia. The primary objective was to compare the postoperative Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores in those receiving SCPB versus morphine. Secondary objectives included intraoperative hemodynamic

Superficial cervical plexus block on pain control in patients with temporomandibular joint internal derangement with headache: a retrospective cohort study.

IMPORTANCE: Prior evidence suggests that plasma and platelet transfusions from female and parous donors are associated with adverse clinical outcomes, which has led to the predominant use of male donors for plasma and platelets in many countries. However, studies on red blood cell transfusions have been conflicting. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether blood donor sex and parity affect mortality of patients undergoing transfusion with red blood cells. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used nationwide blood bank and health register data in Sweden and involved a natural experimen

A prospective, randomized comparison between combined (deep and superficial) and superficial cervical plexus block with levobupivacaine for minimally invasive parathyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) can be performed under cervical plexus block (CPB). Superficial CPB has been reported to be easier to perform with similar efficacy and less anesthesia-related complications than combined deep and superficial CPB. In this study, we compared the efficacy of superficial and combined (deep and superficial) CPB in patients undergoing MIP. METHODS: Forty-two patients with primary hyperparathyroidism due to a solitary adenoma were randomized to receive either a superficial (group superficial, n = 20) or a combined deep and superficial CPB (grou

Acute respiratory failure after deep cervical plexus block for carotid endarterectomy as a result of bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis.

We report about a case of acute respiratory distress (73-year-old female), which occurred minutes after a deep cervical plexus block (40 ml ropivacaine 0.5%) for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and required immediate endotracheal intubation of the patient's trachea and consecutive mechanical ventilation. Subsequently, CEA was performed under general anaesthesia (TIVA) with continuous monitoring by somatosensory-evoked potentials. After a period of 14 hours, the endotracheal tube could be removed, the patient being in fair respiratory, cardiocirculatory and neurological conditions. Retrospectively

Effect of Bilateral Superficial Cervical Plexus Block on Postoperative Pain in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery: A Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND Postoperative pain management following thyroid and parathyroid surgery is crucial for patient recovery and satisfaction. Bilateral superficial cervical plexus block (BSCPB) has gained attention as an effective regional anesthesia technique for managing postoperative pain. However, the overall effectiveness of BSCPB, particularly with adjuncts like dexmedetomidine or ropivacaine, remains unclear. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of BSCPB in reducing postoperative pain in patients undergoing thyroid and parathyroid surgery, and assessed the impact of adjuncts on pain managem
