Invalidation of Diphyllobothrium hottai (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses.

Diphyllobothrium hottai Yazaki, Fukumoto & Abe, 1988 was described based on the morphology of adult worms recovered from golden hamsters that had been experimentally infected with plerocercoids obtained from Japanese surf smelts (Hypomesus pretiosus japonicus) and olive rainbow smelts (Osmerus eperlanus mordax). Although D. hottai was considered to be distinct from Diphyllobothrium ditremum (Creplin, 1825), their taxonomic relationship requires further clarification. In our study, D. hottai and D. ditremum obtained from hamsters experimentally infected with plerocercoids isolated from Japanese

[Effect of Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Cestoda, Caryophyllidea) upon activity of digestive enzymes in bream].

The activities of the main digestive hydrolases were comparatively studied in bream infected and noninfected with cestodes Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Pallas, 1781). It was shown that enzyme activities are distributed in the fish intestine in an irregular manner; the gradient of protease and lipase activities along the gut is presented. Following the infection of bream by cestodes, the activities of the studied enzymes decreased and the percentages of activities of various proteinase subclasses changed. No relation between the distribution of worms along the intestine and the levels of activities

Genetic interrelationships of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea), the causative agent of sparganosis in Europe.

The geographic distribution of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea), the causative agent of food/water-borne sparganosis, is restricted to Europe, where infected canids, felids, mustelids, suids, and reptiles have been documented from Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Serbia, Estonia, Latvia, and Finland. The main objective of the current study was to map the molecular divergence of S. erinaceieuropaei from Finland using the complete sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox1 mtDNA). Seven cox1 haplotypes were determined in 15 tapeworms from E

Molecular phylogeny of Cyclophyllidea (Cestoda: Eucestoda): an in-silico analysis based on mtCOI gene.

Order Cyclophyllidea (of cestode platyhelminths) has a rich diversity of parasites and includes many families and species that are known to cause serious medical condition in humans and domestic and wild animals. Despite various attempts to resolve phylogenetic relationships at the inter-family level, uncertainty remains. In order to add resolution to the existing phylogeny of the order, we generated partial mtCO1 sequences for some commonly occurring cyclophyllidean cestodes and combined them with available sequences from GenBank. Phylogeny was inferred taking a total 83 representative specie

Analysis of the expression of cytoskeletal proteins of Taenia crassiceps ORF strain cysticerci (Cestoda).

The Taenia crassiceps ORF strain is used to generate a murine model of cysticercosis, which is used for diagnosis, evaluation of drugs, and vaccination. This particular strain only exists as cysticerci, is easily maintained under in vivo and in vitro conditions, and offers an excellent model for studying the cytoskeletons of cestodes. In this study, several experimental approaches were used to determine the tissue expression of its cytoskeletal proteins. The techniques used were microscopy (video, confocal, and transmission electron), one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) electrophores

Scanning electron microscope studies of the mucosa of rats infected with Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda).

The intestinal morphology of rats given one, 10 or 100 cysticercoids of hymenolepis diminuta was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The presence of this tapeworm causes extensive villous atrophy and fusion. The most extreme changes in mucosal architecture were observed adjacent to the mature proglottides of the worm and in these areas the villi were reduced either to flattened plate-like structures or to low irregularly shaped undulations. The presence of one large H. diminuta resulted in more severe pathological damage than caused by several smaller worms. Colonization of the upper reg

The pathology induced in laboratory rats by metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps and Mesocestoides corti (Cestoda).

Sprague-Dawley rats were infected by intraperitoneal injection with either the cysticerci of Taenia crassiceps or the tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides corti. Both species of metacestodes reproduce asexually in the peritoneal cavity. The effect of T. crassiceps upon the rats was to cause chronic inflammation of the peritoneum, fibrous adhesions between the visceral organs and hyperplasia of the gut mesenteries which became extended into a large sac-like structure. Dead parasites surrounded by white calcareous material were found free in the peritoneum and attached to the inner body wall and visce

Vitamin absorption in the in vivo intestine of normal and infected (Hymenolepis diminuta: Cestoda) rats.

Uptake and serosal transfer of the vitamins thiamine, riboflavin and folic acid have been studied in vivo in normal and parasitized rats infected with Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda). Regional differences in intestinal uptake of all three vitamins in both uninfected and parasitized animals were not satistically significant. In the parasitized intestine mucosal uptake and serosal transfer of thiamine were significantly inhibited, with increased mucosal accumulation of the vitamin as luminal thiamine concentration increased. Apparent increased riboflavin mucosal uptake in parasitized animals, was

Bothriocestus claviceps (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidae) in pike in southwestern France (Teleostei: Esocidae): molecular evidence.

Bothriocestus claviceps (Goeze, 1782) is a cestode parasite infecting several fish species. One of its principal definitive hosts is the European eel Anguilla anguilla. The parasite is widely distributed across Europe and has been reported from numerous countries, such as Poland, Czechia, and France. In southern France, the European eel co-occurs with the Aquitanian pike, Esox aquitanicus, an endemic species. This pike is threatened by human activities and hybridization with the introduced Northern pike Esox lucius and is therefore classified as "vulnerable" on the French Red List of the Inter

Taxonomic inflation or hidden diversity: unveiling the fact surrounds Lytocestus indicus (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea).

The tapeworms belonging to the order Caryophyllidea (Platyhelminthes, Eucestoda) represent a widespread group of intestinal parasites found in cypriniform and siluriform fishes. This group comprises four families (Balanotaeniidae, Capingentidae, Caryophyllaeidae, Lytocestidae), 42 genera and approximately 130 described species. Additionally, over a hundred new taxa have been reported from India. While many of these taxa are endemic and have unique evolutionary importance, a considerable number of putative new taxa were also invalidated because the quality and reliability of the published data

Aberrant sparganosis in cat caused by Spirometra mansoni (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is a rare zoonotic disease caused by plerocercoid larvae of the genera Spirometra or Sparganum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae). The larvae of Spirometra generally do not undergo asexual reproduction, whereas those of Sparganum can induce proliferative lesions in infected tissues. This paper presents an unusual case of proliferative sparganosis due to infection with Spirometra mansoni in a cat, normally considered a definitive host of the species. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old male domestic cat was presented with a mass on the right side of the face that underwent progr

Grillotia (Cestoda: Trypanorhyncha) plerocerci in an anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius) from the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Trypanorhynch cestodes are common parasites of marine fish with complicated life cycles which have been suggested as model taxa to study the evolution of marine helminth parasites and their life cycles. Among the Trypanorhyncha, the genus Grillotia includes 18 valid species, of which only four have been found in Mediterranean fish hosts. Morphological, histopathological, and molecular data are presented on a massive Grillotia plerocercus infection in an anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius) from the Tyrrhenian Sea. BLAST analysis of the 28S rDNA sequences revealed 99% similarity between specimens h

Tapeworms (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) of Australian reptiles: hidden diversity of strictly host-specific parasites.

Reptilian fauna of Australia is extraordinarily rich and diverse, but very little is known about parasites of reptiles, including proteocephalid cestodes of the genus Ophiotaenia La Rue, 1911. In the present survey, data on these parasites are summarised for the first time based on detailed evaluation of all available type and voucher specimens. This survey includes five named species, with four species redescribed, namely O. amphiboluri (Nybelin, 1917), O. longmani Johnston, 1916, O. mjobergi (Nybelin, 1917), and O. striata (Johnston, 1914), and 9 putative new species which are not formally d

A synoptic review of Caryophyllaeus Gmelin, 1790 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of cyprinid fishes.

Tapeworms of the genus Caryophyllaeus Gmelin, 1790 (Caryophyllidea: Caryophyllaeidae), common parasites of cyprinid fishes, are reviewed and taxonomic status of 42 nominal taxa that have been placed in the genus during its long history is clarified. The following seven species occurring in the Palaearctic Region are recognised as valid: C. laticeps (Pallas, 1781), C. auriculatus (Kulakovskaya, 1961), C. balticus (Szidat, 1941) comb. n. (syn.
