Ocular Surface Diseases in Marine Mammals.

Marine mammal eyes are adapted for underwater and air environments by increasing the mucins in tear film and having flatter corneas and round crystalline lenses. The cornea and lens are most commonly affected by environmental imbalances. Lack of shade and excessive exposure to sunlight are significant risk factors for keratopathy in pinnipeds, and likely true in cetaceans. Natural aging is also important, as sun damage and exposure to other oxidative stressors can cause cumulative damage to the cornea over time. By diminishing UV exposure and optimizing environmental factors, surface ocular di

Taxonomic status and epidemiology of the mesoparasitic copepod Pennella balaenoptera in cetaceans from the western Mediterranean.

Pennella balaenoptera is a mesoparasitic copepod that has been reported in at least 17 cetacean species. Subtle morphological differences in the first antennae of adult females have been used to discriminate this species from P. filosa, a species infecting fishes. Other morphological traits are unreliable because of their high plasticity, and no molecular data are available to confirm the taxonomic status of P. balaenoptera as an independent species. We found no consistent morphological differences of the first antennae between P. balaenoptera and P. filosa collected from cetaceans and fish in

Renal lesions in cetaceans from Brazil.

This study reports the occurrence of renal lesions in cetaceans from the coast of Brazil subjected to necropsy examination between 1996 and 2011. The animals (n = 192) were by-caught in fishing nets, were found dead on beaches or died despite attempted rehabilitation. Kidney samples were evaluated grossly and microscopically and, depending on the histopathological findings, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analyses were conducted. Due to autolysis, a diagnosis was reached in only 128 animals, of which 82 (64.1%) had kidney lesions. Cystic renal disease was the most common lesion observe

Insight into the Epidemiology of Leptospirosis: A Review of Leptospira Isolations from "Unconventional" Hosts.

Leptospirosis is a re-emerging worldwide zoonotic disease. Even though the primary serological test for diagnosis and surveying is the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), isolation remains the gold-standard test to detect Leptospira infections. The leptospirosis transmission is linked to maintenance and accidental hosts. In the epidemiology of Leptospira some serovar are strictly related to specific maintenance hosts; however, in recent years, the bacterium was isolated from an even wider spectrum of species. The aim of this review is to report the isolation of Leptospira strains in animals

Complete amino acid sequence of myoglobin from the pilot whale, Globicephala melaena.

The complete amino acid sequence of the major component myoglobin from the pilot whale, Globicephala melaena, was determined by specific cleavage of the protein to obtain large peptides which are readily degraded by the automatic sequencer. The apomyoglobin was selectively cleaved at the two methionyl residues with cyanogen bromide and the acetimidated apomyoglobin was cleaved at the three arginyl residues by trypsin. From the sequence analysis of four of these peptides and the apoprotein, over 90% of the covalent structure of the protein was obtained. The remainder of the primary structure wa

Blood cell morphology, ultrastructure and cytochemistry in marine mammals: a narrative comparative review.

Marine mammals exhibit a range of hematological features associated with diving, hypoxia, and life in a high-pressure aquatic environment. This narrative review synthesizes available morphological, ultrastructural, and cytochemical data on blood cells in cetaceans, pinnipeds, and sirenians, with the aim of identifying common patterns and sources of interspecific variability. Erythrocytes in marine mammals are often relatively large and display species-specific differences in shape and indices that may contribute to differences in oxygen transport physiology and blood rheology. Leukocyte morpho

Revisiting the genus Bolbosoma Porta, 1908 (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae): host specificity, phylogeny, and species synonymization.

BACKGROUND: Acanthocephalans of the genus Bolbosoma Porta, 1908 are trophically transmitted parasites that infect marine mammals (mostly cetaceans and less frequently pinnipeds) worldwide. There are 12 species currently considered as valid; however, most records lack information on the maturity stage of the specimens. This, coupled with the scarce phylogenetic information available, hinders a correct understanding of their patterns of host specificity, evolutionary history, and taxonomy. A particularly intriguing case is that of Bolbosoma vasculosum (Rudolphi, 1819), which has been frequently

Evolutionary genetics of pulmonary anatomical adaptations in deep-diving cetaceans.

BACKGROUND: Cetaceans, having experienced prolonged adaptation to aquatic environments, have undergone evolutionary changes in their respiratory systems. This process of evolution has resulted in the emergence of distinctive phenotypic traits, notably the abundance of elastic fibers and thickened alveolar walls in their lungs, which may facilitate alveolar collapse during diving. This structure helps selective exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, while minimizing nitrogen exchange, thereby reducing the risk of DCS. Nevertheless, the scientific inquiry into the mechanisms through which these

Repatterning of mammalian backbone regionalization in cetaceans.

Cetacean reinvasion of the aquatic realm is an iconic ecological transition that led to drastic modifications of the mammalian body plan, especially in the axial skeleton. Relative to the vertebral column of other mammals that is subdivided into numerous anatomical regions, regional boundaries of the cetacean backbone appear obscured. Whether the traditional mammalian regions are present in cetaceans but hard to detect due to anatomical homogenization or if regions have been entirely repatterned remains unresolved. Here we combine a segmented linear regression approach with spectral clustering

Parasite microtubule arrays.

Microtubules are a key component of eukaryotic cell architecture. Regulation of the dynamic growth and shrinkage of microtubules gives cells their shape, allows cells to swim, and drives the separation of chromosomes. Parasites have developed intriguingly divergent biology, seemingly expanding upon and reinventing microtubule use in fascinating ways. These organisms affect life on the planet at scales that are often overlooked: there are likely more parasitic than free-living organisms on Earth, and they have a sizeable influence across ecosystems. As parasites can cause devastating diseases,

Muscle Pathology in Free-Ranging Stranded Cetaceans.

Despite the profound impact that skeletal muscle disorders may pose for the daily activities of wild terrestrial and marine mammals, such conditions have been rarely described in cetaceans. In this study, the authors aimed to determine the nature and prevalence of skeletal muscle lesions in small and large odontocetes and mysticetes ( n = 153) from 19 different species. A macroscopic evaluation of the epaxial muscle mass and a histologic examination of the longissimus dorsi muscle were performed in all cases. The only macroscopically evident change was variable degrees of atrophy of the epaxia

Modular organizations of novel cetacean papillomaviruses.

The phylogenetic position of cetacean papillomaviruses (PVs: Omikron-PVs and Upsilon-PVs) varies depending on the region of the genome analysed. They cluster together with Alpha-PVs when analysing early genes and with Xi-PVs and Phi-PVs when analysing late genes. We cloned and sequenced the complete genomes of five novel PVs, sampled from genital and oesophageal lesions of free-ranging cetaceans: Delphinus delphis (DdPV1), Lagenorhynchus acutus (TtPV3 variant), and Phocoena phocoena (PphPV1, PphPV2, and PphPV3). Using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian approaches, all cetacean PVs constituted a m

Evaluating effects of tissue type, preservation method, and decomposition on DNA quality to support genetic sampling in stranded small cetaceans.

Effective management decisions rely on accurate insights into species’ population structure, with high-quality genetic material being essential. Stranded cetaceans are an important source of samples, but meeting quality standards remains challenging. Despite their frequent use in conservation genetics, no controlled studies have compared DNA yield and quality across tissue types and preservation methods. This is further compounded by cetaceans uniquely derived physiology, meaning standards obtained from other mammals might not apply. In this study, we compared DNA concentration, purity, and in

Heart rate reduction during voluntary deep diving in free-ranging loggerhead sea turtles.

Air-breathing vertebrates exhibit cardiovascular responses to diving including heart rate reduction (diving bradycardia). Field studies on aquatic mammals and birds have shown that the intensity of bradycardia can vary depending on diving behaviour, such as the depth of dives and dive duration. However, in aquatic reptiles, the variation in heart rate during deep dives under natural conditions has not been fully investigated. In this study, we released five loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) outfitted with recorders into the sea and recorded their electrocardiogram, depth, water temperat

Molecular evolution of wound healing-related genes during cetacean secondary aquatic adaptation.

The marine environment presents challenges for wound healing in cetaceans, despite their remarkable recovery abilities with minimal infections or complications. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this efficient wound healing remains underexplored. To better understand the molecular mechanisms behind wound healing in cetaceans, we investigated the evolutionary patterns of 37 wound healing-related genes in representative mammals. We found wound healing-related genes experience adaptive evolution in cetaceans: (1) Three extrinsic coagulation pathway-related genes-tissue factor (F3), coag

Using context to train time-domain echolocation click detectors.

This work demonstrates the effectiveness of using humans in the loop processes for constructing large training sets for machine learning tasks. A corpus of over 57 000 toothed whale echolocation clicks was developed by using a permissive energy-based echolocation detector followed by a machine-assisted quality control process that exploits contextual cues. Subsets of these data were used to train feed forward neural networks that detected over 850 000 echolocation clicks that were validated using the same quality control process. It is shown that this network architecture performs well in a va

Decay of Skin-Specific Gene Modules in Pangolins.

The mammalian skin exhibits a rich spectrum of evolutionary adaptations. The pilosebaceous unit, composed of the hair shaft, follicle, and the sebaceous gland, is the most striking synapomorphy. The evolutionary diversification of mammals across different ecological niches was paralleled by the appearance of an ample variety of skin modifications. Pangolins, order Pholidota, exhibit keratin-derived scales, one of the most iconic skin appendages. This formidable armor is intended to serve as a deterrent against predators. Surprisingly, while pangolins have hair on their abdomens, the occurrence
