Designing high-performance thermoelectrics through chalcogen engineering in InSe-based layered materials.

InSe-based van der Waals layered materials InXY (X,Y = S, Se, Te) with a hexagonal phase are investigated by breaking local inversion symmetry to study their structural, mechanical, electronic, and thermoelectric properties. Chalcogen substitution introduces systematic lattice distortions, including reflection symmetry lowering, internal structural relaxation, and bond-length asymmetry with enhanced directional bonding, which not only increase structural rigidity and integrity but also contribute to a direct-to-indirect band-gap transition driven by sulfur-induced off-centering, while both con

Chalcogen Vacancies as Key Drivers of Distinct Physicochemistry in MoS2, MoSe2, and MoTe2 for Selective Catalysis.

The catalytic performance of Mo-based transition-metal-dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers is intrinsically tied to their physicochemical properties. However, the limited chemical diversity among these materials constrains their versatility for key catalytic processes, including carbon dioxide (CRR), nitrogen (NRR), and oxygen (ORR) reduction reactions. This study employs density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the impact of chalcogen vacancies on the properties of MoS 2 ${{\rm{MoS}}_2 }$ , MoSe 2 ${{\rm{MoSe}}_2 }$ , and MoTe 2 ${{\rm{MoTe}}_2 }$ , focusing on the ads

Tailoring intersystem crossing in phosphorus corroles through axial chalcogenation: a detailed theoretical study.

Intersystem crossing (ISC) of visible-light absorbing metal-free corrole macrocycles can be greatly tuned by means of suitable chemical functionalization. Axially chalcogenated phosphorus corrole derivatives (XPCs; X = O, S, Se) are expected to show large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) via the heavy-atom effect and therefore a much improved ISC. Excited-state deactivation of XPCs including PC is studied using time-dependent optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals combined with a polarizable continuum model with toluene as a dielectric medium to account for polar solvent effects. PC and

Host-Guest Interactions Facilitated by Chalcogen Bonding within Selenadiazole Functionalised Porphyrin Nanotubes.

The structural rigidity of tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (TPyP) has been utilised to prepare a robust novel porous coordination polymer of composition Cd2(TPyP)(sez)2 (TPyP=5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin, sez=1,2,5-benzoselenadiazole-5-carboxylate). The coordination polymer may be described as a hexagonal porphyrin nanotube (PNT) and has the potential to bind guest molecules through chalcogen bonding. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) data indicate an internal pore diameter ~9 Å which represents ~35 % of the crystal volume. Immersion of the PNTs in solvents such as DMSO and CS2 res

Excited states and spin-orbit coupling in chalcogen substituted perylene diimides and their radical anions.

While spin-orbit coupling does not play a decisive role in the photophysics of unsubstituted perylene diimides (PDI), this changes dramatically when two phenylselenyl or phenyltelluryl substituents were attached to the PDI bay positions. In the series of PhO-, PhS-, PhSe-, and PhTe-substituted PDIs we observed strongly decreasing fluorescence quantum yield as a consequence of strongly increasing intersystem crossing (ISC) rate, measured by transient absorption spectroscopy with fs- and ns-time resolution as well as by broadband fluorescence upconversion. Time-dependent density functional calcu

Investigation of chalcogen bonding in ebselen·DMAP co-crystals using synchrotron far-infrared spectroscopy.

Chalcogen bonding is a non-covalent interaction gaining increasing interest in various fields including materials science and biochemistry. Although chalcogen bonding in the solid-state is commonly characterised using NMR and X-ray crystallography, complementary techniques are needed to fully understand the solid-state behaviour of this interaction in order to establish robust structure-property relationships. This work presents the synchrotron far-infrared spectra of five chalcogen bonding co-crystal systems comprising ebselen derived chalcogen bond donors with the Lewis base, DMAP. The exper

High-quality Janus MoSSe and WSSe monolayers enabled by hBN-supported chalcogen substitution.

Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers offer distinctive physical properties and device applications because their broken out-of-plane mirror symmetry induces an intrinsic out-of-plane dipole. High crystal quality is essential for accessing their intrinsic excitonic physics, yet improving Janus TMD quality remains challenging due to structural degradation and strain introduced during chalcogen substitution. To address this challenge, we develop a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-supported chalcogen substitution process that yields crack-free Janus TMD monolayers with improved opti

Synergistic cyclic cooperativity governs the strength of chalcogen, pnictogen and tetrel bonds in microhydrated clusters.

It has been demonstrated that the sum of the cooperativity contributions (CCs) of the cyclic structures (common to a referenced hydrogen bond (HB)) when added to the energy of the HB in the respective dimer provides an accurate estimation of its energy in an actual molecular cluster. For this purpose, a molecular tailoring approach (MTA)-based method was utilized to estimate the CCs of these cycles. The HB energies calculated in this fashion (ESynergeticHB) were in excellent agreement with those of their actual cluster counterparts (EClusterHB). In this study, the generality of this methodolog

Chalcogen Bonding Catalysis Enables Ring-Opening of Cyclopropene and Ring Expansion of Aryl Ketones.

Catalytic transformation of carbene species constitutes a fundamental part in organic synthesis, and the research in this direction has been dominated by transition metals while organic catalysts are difficult to mimic such transition-metal-like reactivity. It would significantly advance carbene chemistry if organic catalysts enable achieving classical metal-carbene approaches otherwise unrealizable reactions. Herein, we report that chalcogen bonding catalysis can solve reactivity problem to achieve an elusive Buchner ring expansion of aryl ketones appending a cyclopropene moiety as carbene pr

Chalcogen atom effect on the intersystem crossing kinetic constant of oxygen- and sulfur disubstituted heteroporphyrins.

The modulation of the photophysical properties of di-substituted porphyrin rings upon the oxygen and sulfur-for-nitrogen replacement has been investigated at density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent formulation (TDDFT). The considered properties range from structural behaviors and excitation energies to spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and nonradiative intersystem kinetic constants. Results show that the SOC strongly increase upon chalcogen substitution and, accordingly, the computed nonradiative kinetic constant also indicate an efficient singlet-triplet intersystem crossing in the sul

Robust growth of two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides and their alloys by active chalcogen monomer supply.

The precise precursor supply is a precondition for controllable growth of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Although great efforts have been devoted to modulating the transition metal supply, few effective methods of chalcogen feeding control were developed. Here we report a strategy of using active chalcogen monomer supply to grow high-quality TMDs in a robust and controllable manner, e.g., MoS2 monolayers perform representative photoluminescent circular helicity of ~92% and electronic mobility of ~42 cm2V-1s-1. Meanwhile, a uniform quaternary TMD alloy with three

Tailoring intersystem crossing of perylenediimide through chalcogen-substitution at bay-position: A theoretical perspective.

Molecular-scale design strategies for promoting intersystem crossing (ISC) in small organic molecules are ubiquitous in developing efficient metal-free triplet photosensitizers with high triplet quantum yield (ΦT). Air-stable and highly fluorescent perylenediimide (PDI) in its pristine form displays very small ISC compared to the fluorescence due to the large singlet-triplet gap (ΔES-T) and negligibly small spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between the lowest singlet (S1) and triplet state (T1). However, its ΦT can be tuned by different chemical and mechanical means that are capable of either directly

Ability of Lewis Acids with Shallow σ-Holes to Engage in Chalcogen Bonds in Different Environments.

Molecules of the type XYT = Ch (T = C, Si, Ge; Ch = S, Se; X,Y = H, CH3, Cl, Br, I) contain a σ-hole along the T = Ch bond extension. This hole can engage with the N lone pair of NCH and NCCH3 so as to form a chalcogen bond. In the case of T = C, these bonds are rather weak, less than 3 kcal/mol, and are slightly weakened in acetone or water. They owe their stability to attractive electrostatic energy, supplemented by dispersion, and a much smaller polarization term. Immersion in solvent reverses the electrostatic interaction to repulsive, while amplifying the polarization energy. The σ-holes

Effects of azole rings with different chalcogen atoms on ESIPT behavior for benzochalcogenazolyl-substituted hydroxyfluorenes.

ESIPT behavior has attracted a lot of eyes of researchers in recent years because of its unique optical properties. Due to its large Stokes shift and double emission fluorescence, white light can be generated in the fluorophore based on the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) principle. The excited state proton transfer behavior of hydroxylated benzoxazole (BO-OH), benzothiazole (BS-OH) and benzoselenazole (BSe-OH) have been investigated in heptane, chloroform and DMF solvents. By comparing the infrared vibration spectra and the variation of bond parameters from the S0 to S1 s

Chalcogen-Transfer Rearrangement: Exploring Inter- versus Intramolecular P-P Bond Activation.

tert-Butyl-substituted diphospha[2]ferrocenophane has been used as a stereochemically confined diphosphane to explore the addition of O, S, Se and Te. Although the diphosphanylchalcogane has been obtained for tellurium, all other chalcogens give diphosphane monochalcogenides. The latter transform via chalcogen-transfer rearrangement to the corresponding diphosphanylchalcoganes upon heating. The kinetics of this rearrangement has been followed with NMR spectroscopy supported by DFT calculations. Intermediates during rearrangement point to a disproportionation/synproportionation mechanism for th

A Topochemical Approach to Synthesize Layered Materials Based on the Redox Reactivity of Anionic Chalcogen Dimers.

Layered transition metal compounds represent a major playground to explore unconventional electric or magnetic properties. In that framework, topochemical approaches that mostly preserve the topology of layered reactants have been intensively investigated to tune properties and/or design new materials. Topochemical reactions often involve the insertion or deinsertion of a chemical element accompanied by a change of oxidation state of the cations only. Conversely, cases where anions play the role of redox centers are very scarce. Here we show that the insertion of copper into two dimensional pr

Chalcogen extrusion from heteroallenes and carbon monoxide by a three-coordinate rh(i) disilylamide.

We report the reactions of several heteroallenes (carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide, and phenyl isocyanate) and carbon monoxide with a three-coordinate, bis(phosphine)-supported Rh(I) disilylamide (1). Carbon disulfide reacts with 1 to afford a silyltrithiocarbonate complex similar to an intermediate previously invoked in the deoxygenation of CO2 by 1, and prolonged heating affords a structurally unusual μ-κ(2)(S,S'):κ(2)(S,S')-trithiocarbonate dimer. Carbonyl sulfide reacts with 1 to afford a structurally unique Rh(SCNCS) metallacycle derived from two insertions of OCS and N-to-O silyl-group

Cooperativity of halogen, chalcogen, and pnictogen bonds in infinite molecular chains by electronic structure theory.

Halogen bonds (XBs) are intriguing noncovalent interactions that are frequently being exploited for crystal engineering. Recently, similar bonding mechanisms have been proposed for adjacent main-group elements, and noncovalent "chalcogen bonds" and "pnictogen bonds" have been identified in crystal structures. A fundamental question, largely unresolved thus far, is how XBs and related contacts interact with each other in crystals; similar to hydrogen bonding, one might expect "cooperativity" (bonds amplifying each other), but evidence has been sparse. Here, we explore the crucial step from gas-

Polyhalogenated 2,1,3-Benzochalcogenadiazoles: A Small-Molecule Platform for Multicentered Spin-Orbit Coupling Affecting Optical Properties (Chalcogens = S, Se, Te; Halogens = F, Cl, Br, I).

2,1,3-Benzochalcogenadiazoles and their halogen derivatives (chalcogen = S, Se, Te; halogen = F, Cl, Br, I) are widely employed in organic optoelectronics as chromophoric/fluorophoric electron-acceptor building blocks. In this work they are specified as an advantageous small-molecule platform for multicentered (Se, Te; Cl, Br, I) spin-orbit coupling (SOC) affecting optical properties of π-organics. Electronic absorption and emission/photoluminescence spectra of 4,7-di- and 4,5,6,7-tetrahalogenated 2,1,3-benzochalcogenadiazoles E/X' and E/X, respectively (E = chalcogen, X = halogen), have been
