During a parasitological survey of fishes at Iguazu National Park, Argentina, specimens belonging to the allocreadiid genus Auriculostoma were collected from the intestine of Characidium heirmostigmata. The erection of the new species is based on a unique combination of morphological traits as well as on phylogenetic analysis. Auriculostoma guacurarii n. sp. resembles four congeneric species - Auriculostoma diagonale, Auriculostoma platense, Auriculostoma tica and Auriculostoma totonacapanensis - in having smooth and oblique testes, but can be distinguished by a combination of several morpholo

Success in fish breeding depends on reproduction intensity, periodicity and the place where it occurs. Information about fish species reproduction is important to assist managers, and to determine conservation and management strategies. The fish assemblage of the Iguaçu River basin is already known for its high endemism, and despite this privilege, the large number of dams built along it, threat this particular biodiversity. Astyanax gymnodontus is an endemic fish species and studies on its population structure and reproductive biology are important, since they represent the first step for fur

Mast cells from two erythrinid species: Hoplias malabaricus and Hoplias lacerdae, were studied in several tissues throughout the body using light and electron microscopy. Mast cells were found in all organs studied, but were especially abundant in the gastrointestinal tract, and were always in association with connective tissue. These cells showed different characteristics between the two species studied, like varied morphology, anatomical distribution, density, basophilic/eosinophilic staining and heparin content. In H. malabaricus, the tissues fixed with Helly's solution contained mast cells

The order Characiformes (Teleostei: Ostariophysi) represents one of the most diverse groups within the Neotropical freshwater ichthyofauna. Recently, a phylogeny with unprecedented resolution redefined its internal relationships and delimited Acestrorhamphidae as the most species-rich family within the group. Despite this high diversity, its members exhibit a notably homogeneous body morphology, raising questions about the evolutionary process governing phenotypic evolution in a group known for its ecological and morphological diversity. The present study investigates three subfamilies of Aces

Pituitary gland morphogenesis and the ontogeny of the adenohypophyseal (AH) cells of Astyanax lacustris are presented herein. This Characiformes species shows great ecological and commercial importance, and it has been increasingly used as animal model. For this study, A. lacustris specimens were collected from 0.5 to 120 days after hatching (dah) (adults). The entire animal or its head was appropriately fixed, and after histological processing, the sections were subjected to histochemical and immunohistochemical reactions, using homologous and heterologous antibodies. The first AH cells of A.

BACKGROUND: There are currently nine known gill monogenean species of Diaphorocleidus Jogunoori et al. (Systematic Parasitology 58:115-124, 2004) (Dactylogyridae) which are dispersed within and/or among five fish families in the Neotropical Characiformes: Bryconidae, Acestrorhynchidae, Characidae, Iguanodectidae, and Hemiodontidae. During a fish parasitological study carried out in the Rio Lacantún from Chiapas, Mexico, a new species of Diaphorocleidus on the gill lamellae of Brycon guatemalensis Regan, 1908, was discovered.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to morphologically describe the new par

Historical reconstruction studies are important for understanding the evolutionary mechanisms associated with different parasite-host systems. Platyhelminths of the classes Monopisthocotyla and Polyopisthocotyla (formerly Monogenoidea or Monogenea) have proven to be excellent models for historical reconstruction studies due to their exceptional parasite specificity, suggesting that cospeciation events are the main pattern observed in these parasite-host systems (i.e., codivergence). However, recent studies indicate that not only cospeciation but also duplication, host-switch, and loss (extinct

Coelozoic parasites of the family Myxidiidae were observed in fish of the order Characiformes captured in the middle Tocantins River, Maranhão, Brazil, within the transition between the Cerrado savanna biome and the eastern extreme of the Brazilian Amazon Forest. The analysis of the morphological characteristics of the parasites, complemented with a Bayesian phylogenetic analysis, supported the description of new specie Myxidium imperatrizensis n. sp., found parasitising the gallbladder of specimens of the fish Triportheus angulatus. The study is also only the second report of the occurrence o

Biological invasions can alter ecological interactions, including parasite-host dynamics, with effects that are often gradual and difficult to predict. Serrasalmus geryi, native to the Tocantins-Araguaia basin, was recently recorded in the upper Paraná River floodplain (PIAP), Brazil. This study aimed to characterise, for the first time, the parasitic fauna of this species at an early stage of its introduction and to explore potential interactions with congeneric species. A total of 55 non-native individuals were collected between 2021 and 2024 and parasitological analyses included identificat

Species of Alestidae are known to be parasitised by dactylogyrid monogeneans representing three genera, Afrocleidodiscus Paperna, 1969, Annulotrema Paperna & Thurston, 1969, and Characidotrema Paperna & Thurston, 1968. The objective of the present study was to investigate the species diversity of Monopisthocotylea of African tetras from the Lower Phongolo River and floodplain in South Africa. Four new and two previously described species of Annulotrema were identified from the gills of three species of African tetras, Brycinus imberi, Hydrocynus vittatus, and Micralestes acutidens. In order to assess potential interspecific differences in the endocrine mechanisms regulating feeding in Characiformes, we used three fish species with different feeding habits: two Characidae, the omnivore black widow tetra and the carnivore bucktooth tetra, and one Serrasalmidae, the herbivore silver dollar, as models. cDNAs encoding for appetite-regulating peptides (orexin, cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript CART, cholecystokinin CCK and leptin) were isolated and their tissue distribution examined. The protein sequences of the three species showed most similarities with those of o

In Argentina, the family Diplostomidae is composed of eight genera: Austrodiplostomum Szidat & Nani; Diplostomum von Nordmann; Dolichorchis Dubois; Hysteromorpha Lutz; Neodiplostomum Railliet; Posthodiplostomum Dubois; Sphincterodiplostomum Dubois; and Tylodelphys Diesing. During a parasitological survey of fishes from the Iguazú National Park we detected diplostomid metacercariae in the brain of Erythrinus cf. erythrinus. Fish were caught using crab traps, transported alive to the field laboratory, cold-anaesthetized and euthanized by cervical dissection. Some metacercariae were heat-killed i

In this study, genetic differentiation between karyomorphs A (2n = 42) and D (2n = 39/40) of the wolf fish Hoplias malabaricus, which is comprised of several cryptic species that present a wide variety of diploid chromosome numbers and sex chromosome systems, resulting in the identification of seven distinct karyomorphs (A-G), was investigated using a combination of molecular and cytogenetic tools. Deep sequence divergences for both karyomorphs were observed and indicate a long period of reproductive isolation between karyomorphs A and D. Additionally, one individual with 61 chromosomes was id

This study investigated the population dynamics and reproductive biology of the acanthocephalan Octospiniferoides incognita in the intestine of the herbivorous fish Rhytiodus microlepis throughout the seasonal water level fluctuations of a floodplain lake in Amazonas State, Brazil. Between July 2022 and November 2023, hosts were sampled during the rising water, high water, receding water, and low water phases. The results show that the water level fluctuations significantly influence infection levels. Prevalence was 73% during rising water, reached 100% during high water, and remained high dur

Based on morphological and molecular data, we describe a new species of Diaphorocleidus parasitizing the nasal cavities of Tetragonopterus argenteus from the Lima Campos weir, municipality of Icó, state of Ceará, Brazil. Diaphorocleidus radius n. sp. resembles other congeners in the morphology of the accessory piece, all by having a bifurcated accessory piece (pincer-shaped), composed of two subunits articulated. However, the new species can be easily distinguished from all congeners by the morphology of the sclerotized structures of the haptor (ventral anchor with well-developed superficial r

The Eastern Amazon is rich in bauxite ore. The extraction and processing of bauxite lead to the mobilization of Aluminum (Al) and other metals in environmental. We evaluated the metals (Al, Mn, Ba, and Cr) concentration in tissue, water, and sediment associated with antioxidant and oxidative damage responses in Bryconops caudomaculatus. The samplings were done in two hydrological periods (post-rain and post-dry periods) and at three points, located at two rivers: one in the surroundings of the mining area (P1) and other inside the mining area, upstream (P2), and downstream (P3). A previously undescribed Myxobolus sp. was isolated from the cranial nerves and ganglia of the spotfin hatchetfish Thoracocharax stellatus (Kner) that exhibited neurologic signs following importation from Colombia. Associated plasmodia formed space-occupying masses within nerves, compressing neuronal cell bodies and causing axonal degeneration. Myxospores from these fish were morphologically and molecularly distinct from other myxobolids infecting the central nervous system of characins. In valvular view, spores are pyriform with a rounded posterior and tapering anterior aspect. Myxospore bodi

Myxobolus porofilus sp. n. is described infecting the visceral cavity of Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836) cultivated in São Paulo State, Brazil. The plasmodial form of the parasite is 3-5 mm in length and appeared compressed between the wall of the visceral cavity and the pyloric caecum, reposing on this organ. The spores are small (length 5.7 +/- 0.3 microm, width 4.8 +/- 0.2 microm; mean +/- SD) and round to elliptical in frontal view. The valve surfaces are smooth and have sutural folds. The polar capsules are ovoid, small (length 1.6 +/- 0.1 microm, width 1.1 +/- 0.1 microm) and e
