Seeding improves the strength of bio-tiles grown with microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation.

Bio-tiles are a biobased alternative to conventional tiles that utilise a promising technology called microbially induced calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation (MICP). This technology has low energy requirements and also sequesters carbon. Bio-tiles have been made in previous work using a submersion method, however, the process required additives such as 0.3 M magnesium chloride to achieve bio-tiles that meet international standards. The current study aimed to improve the bio-tile strength properties with CaCO3 crystal seeding and a pumping method instead of the use of magnesium that also in

Preferential precipitation of acidic variants from monoclonal antibody pools.

Microheterogeneity of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) can impact their activity and stability. Formation of charge variants is considered as the most important source of the microheterogeneity. In particular, controlling the content of the acidic species is often of major importance for the production process and regulatory approval of therapeutic proteins. In this study, the preferential precipitation process was developed for reducing the content of acidic variants in mAb downstream pools. The process design was preceded by the determination of phase behavior of mAb variants in the presence of

Ionic iodinated contrast medium and amobarbital sodium mixtures: potential for precipitation.

When a small amount of diatrizoate meglumine, an ionic iodinated contrast medium, is left in a catheter system before injection of amobarbital sodium or when the contrast medium is intentionally mixed with amobarbital sodium, a potentially dangerous situation occurs. The authors showed in vitro that a dense precipitate forms in this situation. This is due to an acid-base reaction between the relatively acidic contrast medium and basic barbiturate and the subsequent formation of insoluble amobarbital.

Optimization of P compounds recovery from aerobic sludge by chemical modeling and response surface methodology combination.

Phosphorus recovery has drawn much attention during recent years, due to estimated limited available quantities, and to the harmful environmental impact that it may have when freely released into aquatic environments. Struvite precipitation from wastewater or biological sludge is among the preferred approaches applied for phosphorus recovery, as it results in the availability of valuable fertilizer materials. This process is mostly affected by pH and presence of competitive ions in solution. Modeling and optimization of the precipitation process may help understanding the optimal conditions un

Ammonia removal from landfill leachate by struvite formation: an alarming concentration of phosphorus in the treated effluent.

This study examined the removal of ammonia nitrogen from the leachate of a landfill site using the chemical precipitation of struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O). This procedure achieved a reduction in the ammonia concentration that was higher than 99% when the molar ratio of 1.8:1.0:1.4 for Mg2+:NH4+:PO43- was adopted. The metal concentration found in the precipitate formed was lower than the limits set by Brazilian and American regulations (CONAMA 375/2006 and US EPA, 40 CFR 503.1993). This demonstrates the potential use for this practice in agriculture. However, the effluent obtained from the tests pre

Mercury isotope fractionation during precipitation of metacinnabar (β-HgS) and montroydite (HgO).

To utilize stable Hg isotopes as a tracer for Hg cycling and pollution sources in the environment, it is imperative that fractionation factors for important biogeochemical processes involving Hg are determined. Here, we report experimental results on Hg isotope fractionation during precipitation of metacinnabar (β-HgS) and montroydite (HgO). In both systems, we observed mass-dependent enrichments of light Hg isotopes in the precipitates relative to the dissolved Hg. Precipitation of β-HgS appeared to follow equilibrium isotope fractionation with an enrichment factor ε(202)Hg(precipitate-supern

Climate change impact on atmospheric nitrogen deposition in northwestern Europe: a model study.

A high-resolution chemical transport model, driven by meteorology representing current and future climate, was used to investigate the effects of possible future changes in climate on nitrogen deposition in northwestern Europe. The model system was able to resolve the climatology of precipitation and chemical properties observed in northern Europe during the 1980s, albeit with some underestimation of the temporal and spatial variability of meteorological parameters and chemical components. The results point toward a substantial increase (30% or more) in nitrogen deposition over western Norway

The effects of magnesium and ammonium additions on phosphate recovery from greenhouse wastewater.

Phosphorus recovery from greenhouse wastewater, using precipitation-crystallization, was conducted under three levels of calcium concentration, 304 mg/L (7.6 mmol/L), 384 mg/L (9.6 mmol/L), and 480 mg/L (12 mmol/L), and also with additions of ammonium and magnesium into the wastewater. Jar test results confirmed high phosphate removal, with more than 90% of the removal achieved with a pH as low as 7.7. Under the low calcium concentration, ammonium addition affected the chemical reactions at pH lower than 8.0, where struvite was produced; when the pH was raised to 8.8, other calcium compounds d

Phosphorous removal in batch systems using ferric chloride in the presence of activated sludges.

The objectives of this work were: (a) to analyze the effect of alkalinity, pH and initial Fe:P molar ratio (Fe(0):P(0)) on the precipitation of orthophosphate using ferric chloride in the presence of activated sludge in order to represent conditions of simultaneous precipitation, and in exhausted wastewater to simulate conditions of post-precipitation, (b) to compare the experimental results with predictions obtained from a chemical equilibrium model, and (c) to propose a mechanistic model to determine the dose of coagulant required to achieve a given orthophosphate removal degree at constant

Calcite precipitation by the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. ATCC 33047.

Microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an ecologically vital process where the metabolic activity of microorganisms causes the precipitation of calcium carbonate. In cyanobacteria, MICP is thought to occur primarily due to photosynthesis. During this process, cyanobacteria consume carbon dioxide, raising the local pH, which leads to conditions favorable to calcium carbonate precipitation. However, how individual cells contribute to MICP is poorly understood. Here, we use quantitative microscopy to obtain direct evidence of MICP caused by the filamentous cyanobacter

Effects of dimethylarsenate coprecipitation with ferrihydrite on Fe(II)-induced mineral transformation and the release of dimethylarsenate.

Organoarsenicals are toxic pollutants of global concern, and their environmental geochemical behavior might be greatly controlled by iron (Fe) (hydr)oxides through coprecipitation, which is rarely investigated. Here, the effects of the incorporation of dimethylarsenate (DMAs(V)), a typical organoarsenical, into the ferrihydrite (Fh) structure on the mineral physicochemical properties and Fe(II)-induced phase transformation of DMAs(V)-Fh coprecipitates with As/Fe molar ratios up to 0.0876 ± 0.0036 under anoxic conditions and the accompanying DMAs(V) release were investigated. The presence of DM

Co-precipitation of Cd with struvite during phosphorus recovery.

During the struvite recovery process, Cd, a hazardous metal commonly found in waste streams, can be sequestered by struvite. This study investigated the influence of Cd2+ on the precipitation of struvite. Quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) results showed that the purity of struvite decreased from 99.1% to 73.6% as Cd concentration increased from 1 to 500 μM. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a roughened surface of struvite, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the peak area ratio of Cd-OH increased from 19.4% to 51.3%, while the area ratio of Cd-PO4 d

Application of Multiple Regression and Design of Experiments for Modelling the Effect of Monoethylene Glycol in the Calcium Carbonate Scaling Process.

To avoid gas hydrate formation during oil and gas production, companies usually employ thermodynamic inhibitors consisting of hydroxyl compounds, such as monoethylene glycol (MEG). However, these inhibitors may cause other types of fouling during production such as inorganic salt deposits (scale). Calcium carbonate is one of the main scaling salts and is a great concern, especially for the new pre-salt wells being explored in Brazil. Hence, it is important to understand how using inhibitors to control gas hydrate formation may be interacting with the scale formation process. Multiple regressio

Dissolution and precipitation of clay minerals under geologic CO2 sequestration conditions: CO2-brine-phlogopite interactions.

To ensure efficiency and sustainability of geologic CO2 sequestration (GCS), a better understanding of the geochemical reactions at CO2-water-rock interfaces is needed. In this work, both fluid/solid chemistry analysis and interfacial topographic studies were conducted to investigate the dissolution/precipitation on phlogopite (KMg3Si3AlO10(F,OH)2) surfaces under GCS conditions (368 K, 102 atm) in 1 M NaCl. Phlogopite served as a model for clay minerals in potential GCS sites. During the reaction, dissolution of phlogopite was the predominant process. Although the bulk solution was not supersa

Selective leaching and recovery of phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash with CaO addition.

Incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) with high P2O5 content is a potential phosphorus resource that can replace the non-renewable phosphorus rocks. However, extracting phosphorus from ISSA using hydrometallurgical methods also dissolves a large amount of impurity metals into the leachate. Therefore, this study proposes a new method combining high-temperature reaction with CaO addition, selective leaching, and chemical precipitation for efficient and low-cost phosphorus recovery from ISSA. During thermal treatment at 1050 °C, the addition of CaO significantly influenced the types and amounts of
