In the summers of 2018 and 2019, a disease outbreak stroke 25 broiler chicken farms and 3 broiler breeder farms in different Governorates in Egypt. The disease caused a mortality rate ranging from 3.2 to 9%. Postmortem examination showed petechial hemorrhage in the breast and thigh muscles, thymus gland, and peritoneal cavity and extensive hemorrhages in the kidneys. A total of 140 liver, kidney, lung, skeletal muscles, thymus, and spleen samples were collected. Twenty-eight pooled samples were created and examined by PCR and histopathological examination to identify the causative pathogens. A

Both Chicken anemia virus (CAV) and Gyrovirus galga 1 (GyVg1) belong to the family Anelloviridae and genus Gyrovirus. They are non-enveloped, single-stranded circular DNA viruses that can infect chicken populations, leading to similar clinical symptoms such as growth retardation and immunosuppression, making clinical differentiation challenging. This study established a duplex TaqMan real-time PCR assay to simultaneously detect CAV and GyVg1. Specific primers and probes were developed to target the VP3 gene of CAV (labeled with VIC) and the VP1 gene of GyVg1 (labeled with FAM). The optimizatio

Despite intensive vaccination efforts, Chicken Infectious Anemia Virus (CIAV) remains a formidable threat to the Egyptian poultry industry, primarily through the emergence of vaccine-escape variants. While most studies have focused on Northern Egypt, there is a critical knowledge gap regarding the viral landscape in the Southern provinces. This study provides the most extensive surveillance to date, spanning 10 diverse Egyptian governorates with a strategic focus on Upper Egypt (2024-2025). Out of 400 collected samples, TaqMan-based qPCR revealed a high prevalence of 30% (120/400). Five repres

Three strains of chicken anemia virus (CAV) were detected in 11 to 14-weeks old chickens, showing depression, wasting, and increased mortality, from three farms in eastern Japan. Another strain was detected in 12-weeks old chickens from one farm without clinical signs. Bacterial infections were suggested in three farms with clinical signs and its involvement in the occurrence of the diseases might be suspected. Sequence analysis of the VP1, VP2, and VP3 genes of four CAV strains revealed that the three from farms with clinical signs belonged to genotype A2, whereas that from the apparently-nor

Inclusion body hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (IBH-HPS) caused by fowl adenovirus type 4 (FAdV-4) has caused huge economic losses for China in the past five years. At present, this disease is controlled in many flocks with the inactivated FAdV vaccine, but the offspring chicks of a layer breeding flock that were vaccinated with this vaccine still became infected and developed IBH-HPS with a 20% mortality rate. Analysis revealed that the NDV-attenuated vaccine in use from the above-mentioned poultry farm was simultaneously contaminated with FAdV-4 and chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV)

BACKGROUND: Chicken anemia virus (CAV) is an important viral pathogen that causes anemia and severe immunodeficiency syndrome in chickens worldwide. Generally, CAV infection occurs via vertical transmission in young chicks that are less than two weeks old, which are very susceptible to the disease. Therefore, epidemiological investigations of CAV infection and/or the evaluation of the immunization status of chickens is necessary for disease control. Up to the present, systematically assessing viral protein antigenicity and/or determining the immunorelevant domain(s) of viral proteins during se

Chickens infected intravenously at 8 days after hatching with an avian osteopetrosis virus developed a severe, progressive anemia in the absence of osteopetrosis. The anemia was characterized as a pancytopenia, in which erythrocytes, granulocytes, and thrombocytes decreased concomitantly. Serum bilirubin levels were normal, whereas erythrocytes from infected chickens demonstrated a slightly elevated osmotic fragility. A negative Coombs test indicated that there was no evidence for erythrocyte-bound antibody. Erythrocytes from infected animals had slightly decreased 51Cr-labeled erythrocyte sur

Examination of bone from chickens infected as 10-day-old embryos with isolates of an avian osteopetrosis virus revealed that MAV-2(O) plaque isolate 32/2/4 caused rapid bone growth, while MAV-2(O) plaque isolate 13 caused a mild form of bone growth. MAV-2(O) plaque isolate 32/2/4 caused anemia when injected into the 8-day-old hatched chick and bone growth in ovo when injected into the 4-day-old embryo. Passive administration of neutralizing antibody protected against MAV-2(O)-induced bone growth when antibody was given to the embryo 1 day after virus. Neutralizing antibody also protected again

Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) is an acute, highly contagious upper-respiratory infectious disease of chickens. In this study, a real-time PCR method was developed for fast and accurate detection and quantitation of ILTV DNA of chickens experimentally infected with ILTV strain LJS09 and naturally infected chickens. The detection lower limit of the assay was 10 copies of DNA. There were no cross reactions with the DNA and RNA of infectious bursal disease virus, chicken anemia virus, reticuloendotheliosis virus, avian reovirus, Newcastle disease virus, and Marek's disease virus. Protection against diseases caused by the avian viruses, Marek's disease, Infectious laryngotracheitis, chicken anemia and turkey meningoencephalitis is achieved by live vaccines. The application quality is important to assure proper uptake in commercial flocks. We describe a novel evaluation method for the vaccination process by sequential monitoring the vaccine viruses in feathers. Feather collection is easy, non-invasive and non-lethal for the birds, therefore advantageous for monitoring purposes. To demonstrate the vaccine virus presence, an innovative assay of nested real-time amplificati

Marek's disease virus (MDV), reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV), avian reovirus (ARV), chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), and fowl adenovirus (FAdV) are important causes of disease in poultry. To investigate the infection status of the above six viruses in chickens in China, 1,187 samples from chicken flocks were collected and tested using a newly developed multiplex reverse-transcription quantitative real-time PCR (MRT-qPCR) assay in the study. A series of validation tests confirmed that the MRT-qPCR assay has high specificity, sensitivity, and repe

A healthy immune system is a cornerstone for poultry production. Any factor diminishing the immune responses will affect production parameters and increase cost. There are numerous factors, infectious and noninfectious, causing immunosuppression (IS) in chickens. This paper reviews the three viral diseases that most commonly induce IS or subclinical IS in chickens: Marek's disease virus (MDV), chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV), and infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), as well as the interactions among them. MDV-induced IS (MDV-IS) affects both humoral and cellular immune responses. It

Liver diseases seriously challenge the health of chickens raised on scaled farms and cause tremendous economic losses to farm owners. The causative agents for liver diseases are still elusive, even though various pathogens, such as the hepatitis E virus, have been reported. In the winter of 2021, a liver disease was observed on a chicken farm in Dalian, China, which increased chicken mortality by up to 18%. We conducted panvirome profiling of the livers, spleens, kidneys, and recta of 20 diseased chickens. The viromic results revealed coinfection of multiple viruses, including pathogenic ones,

Fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4) is the pathogenic agent of hydropericardium hepatitis syndrome (HHS) in chickens and ducks, which has caused huge economic losses for the Chinese poultry industry since 2015. In order to objectively determine the prevalence and co-infection status of the virus in Shandong province in China, we analyzed a total of 679 clinical cases of chickens and ducks from 36 farms in the province. The results showed that the FAdV-4 infection rate was 65.2% (443/679), and the rate in breeder ducks was almost two-fold higher than that in breeder chickens (68.57% vs. 34.30%)

BACKGROUND: Chicken anemia virus (CAV), avian reovirus (ARV), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), Marek's disease virus (MDV) and reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) all cause immunosuppressive disease in birds through vertical or horizontal transmission. Mixed infections with these immunosuppressive pathogens lead to atypical clinical signs and obstruct accurate diagnoses and epidemiological investigations. Therefore, it is essential to develop a high-throughput assay for the simultaneous detection of these immunosuppressive viruses with high specificity and sensitivity. The aim of this stu

Gyrovirus 3 (GyV3), the third novel emerging species of the genus Gyrovirus of the Anelloviridae family, has been described in multiple hosts. Epidemiologically, there are suggestions that GyV3 is associated with diarrhea/proventriculitis, however, no direct causal evidence exists between GyV3 infection and specific clinical diseases. Herein, we infected special pathogen-free (SPF) chickens with GyV3, and then assessed the pathogenicity and tissue tropism. The results revealed that GyV3 induced persistent infection characterized by diarrhea, aplastic anemia, immunosuppression, and persistent s

Twelve-day-old broiler-type chickens had hemorrhagic necrotic wing tips. After 10 blind subcultures in an MDCC-MSB1 cell line, a virus (so-called chick anemia agent [CAA]) was isolated and designated CL-1 CAA. Five-day-old specific-pathogen-free chicken embryos from a commercial breeder flock that were found not to possess antibody against CAA were infected with CL-1 virus via yolk-sac injection. Many (49%) infected embryos were small and apparently had died from severe systemic hemorrhage. Hatched chicks were small and had pale feathers, skin, skeletal muscles, bone marrow, and viscera. BACKGROUND: Varicella zoster virus is very rarely associated with aplastic anemia. Bone marrow transplantation from an HLA-identical sibling is the treatment of choice.
CASE REPORT: A seven-year-old boy presented with aplastic anemia (AA) following chicken pox infection. No clinical improvement was observed with pharmaceutical therapy and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) was performed from his HLA 5/6 identical mother. Since the transplantation, the patient has had a durable, trilineage hematological response for 12 months.
CONCLUSIONS: The present case with varicella zoste
