METHODS: Semi-structured online interviews were carried out by two researchers using four practice-based vignettes created with an expert pain nurse. The interviews elicited the views of eight parents on best practi

The Lake Alice Hospital Child and Adolescent Unit: Accountability - The Response to Date.

In the 1970s Dr Selwyn Leeks, a registered psychiatrist set up a child and adolescent unit in the grounds of Lake Alice Hospital, a New Zealand psychiatric facility. The adolescents were not diagnosed as having mental disorders but were placed there for behavioural issues. They were controlled by "aversion therapy" and subjected to electroconvulsive therapy treatment, paraldehyde injections and other forms of abuse. A number of complaints followed, which led to Government inquiries and reports. In 1999 a class action was commenced which was settled by the Government making "ex gratia" payments

Hospitalization for child physical abuse before hospitalization for osteogenesis imperfecta or severe hemophilia: A nationwide cohort study in France.

BACKGROUND: Timely and accurate diagnosis of early child physical abuse (CPA) is crucial to avoid recurrence and protect victims. Ruling out differential diagnoses is also important to avoid misdiagnosis of CPA. We evaluated the risk of hospitalization for early CPA before hospitalization for its 2 main differential diagnoses: osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and severe hemophilia (SH). METHODS: This population-based cohort study used the national administrative database covering all hospitals in France. We followed infants born from 2010 to 2019 until age 2. We identified infants with a first di

All ED visits and subsequent hospitalizations with a diagnosis of "Child physical ab

The use of ICD-10 coding for children hospitalized with suspected child physical abuse at a tertiary care pediatric hospital in Greece.

PURPOSE: Child physical abuse (CPA) is under-documented in hospital databases, posing challenges for its identification. The use of abuse-specific ICD-10 codes in identifying suspected CPA cases remains limited. This study investigated the use of ICD-10 codes to document suspected CPA cases in a pediatric hospital in Greece. METHODS: We examined data from all hospitalized children younger than 18 years evaluated for suspected CPA by the country's first Child Safety Care Unit (CSCU) between June 2016 and September 2021. ICD-10 codes extracted from the hospital's electronic medical records (EMR

From Hospital Bed to the Playground: A Child's Story of Overcoming a Spinal Arachnoid Cyst.

Spinal arachnoid cyst is an uncommon medical condition. Recurrence of arachnoid cysts is also an unfamiliar phenomenon. The recurrence and the postoperative complications had lengthened the craving for the patient's ambulation. However, appropriate surgical decisions and adequate surgical management with modern equipment have made the management unparalleled. Here, we explain a boy's journey from a bedridden condition due to a dorsal arachnoid cyst to the playground. Not only the disease entity but also the management and journey of the patient made this case uncommon. Finally prompt response

Trends in hospital encounters for child physical abuse through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Child physical abuse did not increase early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic as anticipated. However, abuse epidemiology has not been evaluated during later periods of the pandemic. This study's objective was to compare the volume of hospital encounters (i.e., emergency department visits and hospitalizations) for abuse and injuries concerning for abuse at 42 US children's hospitals across three pandemic periods compared with prepandemic, during January 1, 2018 through June 30, 2023. Median monthly volumes of encounters as well as child- and encounter-level characteristics fo

History of pediatric TBI hospitalization and current child-parent relationship quality in China.

BACKGROUND: Long-term child-parent relationship quality following hospitalization for pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We tested whether current child-parent conflict and closeness were related to the children's history of TBI-related experiences and contemporary child/family characteristics. METHODS: The sample included 202 Chinese children (Boys: 60.4%) with a history of hospitalization for TBI. On average, the children were 11.2 years old (SD = 1.59) and sustained TBI at 8.5 years old (SD = 1.6). TBI-related data were obtained from hospital medi

Acute Demyelinating Syndromes: A report of child neurology department of Sfax University Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: The yearly incidence of Acute Demyelinating Syndromes (ADS) in a multiethnic cohort of children published by Langer-Gould and al in 2011 was estimated at about 1.66 per 100,000. Nevertheless, the real incidence for these disorders is still underestimated as the iterative revision for diagnosis criteria have failed to classify a significant number of children with ADS. PURPOSE: This work was aimed to describe clinical and paraclinical characteristics of ADS in a pediatric population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Demographic, clinical and paraclinical data of 42 children (24 females; 18
