A Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic Model to Predict Systemic Ondansetron Concentration in Liver Cirrhosis Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Ondansetron is a drug that is routinely prescribed for the management of nausea and vomiting associated with cancer, radiation therapy, and surgical operations. It is mainly metabolized in the liver, and it might accumulate in patients with hepatic impairment and lead to unwanted adverse events. METHODS: A physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was developed to predict the exposure of ondansetron in healthy and liver cirrhosis populations. The population-based PBPK simulator PK-Sim was utilized for simulating ondansetron exposure in healthy and liver cirrhosis popula

Sexual function and satisfaction in adults based on the definition of child sexual abuse.

INTRODUCTION: The literature shows a discrepancy in the association between child sexual abuse (CSA) and adult sexual function. One of the proposed explanations for this discrepancy is the different ways in which CSA is assessed. While some studies explicitly ask potential participants whether they are sexual abuse survivors, others ask whether participants experienced specific unwanted sexual behaviors. AIM: This study investigated the differences between women who self-identified as CSA survivors, women who experienced similar unwanted sexual experiences but did not identify as CSA survivor

Resilience paths: maternal experiences in coping with syphilis exposure or congenital infection and the role of support networks.

BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis is a significant public health problem and can lead to several unfavorable perinatal outcomes and severe sequelae in children. In Brazil, the number of cases of congenital and gestational syphilis continues to increase, highlighting the need for timely diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. A lack of adequate follow-up during prenatal care may result in unwanted outcomes for the neonate, such as prolonged hospitalization and impacts on neurodevelopment. Although many studies have focused on the clinical aspects of congenital syphilis, there is a gap in understand

Contraception and women's health.

More and more women all over the world are opting for fertility by choice not by chance. Contraceptive use has a tremendous impact on women's health. The ability to regulate and control fertility is a basic component of health, positively defined as a state of physical, mental and social well-being. Contraception is saving the lives of women around the world from the hazards of unwanted pregnancy. Optimal childbearing is also contributing to infant and child survival. Contraception has a complex relationship to sexually-transmitted diseases. Contraceptive safety is a major public health concer

"You cannot stay with one person once you begin having sex at a young age": the prevalence, correlates and effects of early sexual debut among children in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Children's initiation of early sex has several negative implications on their sexual and reproductive health, growth and development. In Ghana, few studies on early sexual debut have focused on adolescents. Therefore, this study examined the prevalence, causes, correlates and effects of early sexual debut among children aged 8 to 17 in Ghana using secondary data from the Department of Children of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-method approach guided the study. Descriptive statistics and multivariable binary logistic re

The Lived Experience of Child Marriage in the United States.

Despite international and domestic calls to end child marriage, 48 U.S. states permit the marriage of minors younger than age 18 as of August 2018. In developing nations, child marriage is associated with a wide range of adverse economic, health, and mental health outcomes, yet little research has been done to understand its effects on developed nations such as the United States. This study is the first to interview adults who were married as children in the United States, to investigate the reasons why the marriages occurred, and qualitatively understand the experiences of married American ch

Peritraumatic Tonic Immobility and Trauma-Related Symptoms in Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse: The Role of Posttrauma Cognitions.

Tonic immobility is a set of involuntary motor responses elicited under conditions of extreme fear and perceived inescapability, and it is one type of peritraumatic distress reported by survivors of child sexual abuse. Experiencing tonic immobility during child sexual abuse is associated with increased risk for developing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, although less is known about relations between tonic immobility and other established risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder. We investigated posttraumatic cognitions as a potential mediator of the relations between peritra

Abuse in childhood and adolescence as a predictor of type 2 diabetes in adult women.

BACKGROUND: Although child abuse is associated with obesity, it is not known whether early abuse increases risk of type 2 diabetes. PURPOSE: To investigate associations of child and adolescent abuse with adult diabetes. METHODS: Proportional hazards models were used to examine associations of lifetime abuse reported in 2001 with risk of diabetes from 1989 to 2005 among 67,853 women in the Nurses' Health Study II. Data were analyzed in 2009. RESULTS: Child or teen physical abuse was reported by 54% and sexual abuse by 34% of participants. Models were adjusted for age, race, body type at age

The Prevalence of Child Sexual Abuse among Slovak Late Adolescents.

The present study aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of child sexual abuse (CSA) in a large-scale sample of Slovak late adolescents. Randomized cluster sampling was used to sample 2186 students in their final school year of secondary school with mean age of 18.6 years (SD = .7 years). The study employed the Child Sexual Abuse Questionnaire consisting of multiple behavior-specific questions. The prevalence of CSA was analyzed separately for three clusters of CSA and gender. The prevalence of non-contact forms of CSA was 40.6% among girls and 17.7% among boys. CSA with physical c

Short birth interval and associated factors among women of child bearing age in northern Ethiopia, 2016.

BACKGROUND: Short birth interval is known to have a negative effect on perinatal, neonatal and child health outcomes. In Ethiopia, 29% of births are short birth intervals at less than 24 months. Even though optimum birth spacing is considered as an essential factor for the health of women and their children, to the best of the authors' knowledge studies conducted on short birth interval are insufficient to inform policy makers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess short birth interval and associated factors among women of child bearing age in Tigray, Ethiopia. METHODS: A community b

Human rights begin at birth: international law and the claim of fetal rights.

In the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the foundation of human rights, the text and negotiating history of the "right to life" explicitly premises human rights on birth. Likewise, other international and regional human rights treaties, as drafted and/or subsequently interpreted, clearly reject claims that human rights should attach from conception or any time before birth. They also recognise that women's right to life and other human rights are at stake where restrictive abortion laws are in place. This paper reviews the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convent

Perpetrators and context of child sexual abuse in Kenya.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) interventions draw from a better understanding of the context of CSA. A survey on violence before age 18 was conducted among respondents aged 13-17 and 18-24 years. Among females (13-17), the key perpetrators of unwanted sexual touching (UST) were friends/classmates (27.0%) and among males, intimate partners (IP) (35.9%). The first incident of UST among females occurred while traveling on foot (33.0%) and among males, in the respondent's home (29.1%). Among females (13-17), the key perpetrators of unwanted attempted sex (UAS) were relatives (28.9%) and among males, fri

Residual unabsorbed midazolam: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Oral midazolam is commonly administered to reduce anxiety in children presenting for medical procedures or surgery. It is unclear what volume of medication remains unabsorbed in the stomach when the child presents for anesthetic induction prior to these procedures. The presence of any significant residual medication in the stomach has significant clinical implications in the postoperative period. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old white Caucasian boy presented for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy after receiving oral midazolam liquid. Insertion of the endoscope into the stomach revea

[Psychosocial aspects of fertility disorders].

The number of couples experiencing unwanted childlessness will in all likelihood continue to grow. Thus, ever more couples are undergoing IVF treatment; in Germany, this is, however, successful in only 13.9% of attempts. An unfulfilled wish for a child can have both negative emotional effects on individual partner and consequences for the couple's relationship. Women in particular suffer from the psychological stress that can be caused by infertility; they are more anxious, depressed, and have a decreased self-esteem than their partners. The desire to counteract these emotional strains and to

Risk factors for pregnancy related complications among urban slum and non-slum women in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Bangladesh is facing a higher maternal mortality and morbidity than many other developing countries in the world. The majority of these maternal deaths occur due to pregnancy related complications. Although health facilities in urban areas in Bangladesh are widely available, women living in underprivileged urban areas are least likely to receive the maternal health services and as a result, they face more pregnancy related complications. Unfortunately, there are only a few studies on complications during maternal and delivery period in these areas. We aim to investigate the factors

Course of perinatal depressive symptoms among South African women: associations with child outcomes at 18 and 36 months.

PURPOSE: Latent modelling was used to identify trajectories of depressive symptoms among low-income perinatal women in South Africa. Predictors of trajectories and the association of trajectories with child outcomes were assessed. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of data collected among women living in Cape Town settlements (N = 446). Participants were eligible if pregnant and 18 years or older, and included in the analysis if allocated to the control arm (routine perinatal care). Participants were excluded in case of non-singleton birth and baby death. Follow-up assessments were at 2 we

Physical and sexual abuse in childhood as predictors of early-onset cardiovascular events in women.

BACKGROUND: Although child abuse is widespread and has been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, its association with CVD events is not established. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined associations of child abuse with CVD events among 66 798 women in the Nurses' Health Study 2. Proportional hazards models estimated hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for myocardial infarction (n=262), stroke (n=251), and total CVD (n=513). Severe physical abuse was reported by 9% and forced sex by 11% of participants. After adjustment for age, race, childhood body type, parenta
