Prediction of child performance on a parent-child behavioral approach test with animal phobic children.

A host of factors including genetic influences, temperament characteristics, learning experiences, information processing biases, parental psychopathology, and specific parenting practices have been hypothesized to contribute to the development and expression of children's phobias. In the present study, the authors focused on parental psychopathology (phobic anxiety) and parenting behaviors (warmth, involvement) in the prediction of child performance on a behavioral approach test (BAT). All children (n = 44) experienced a phobia of animals and were clinic referred. The youth completed two BATs

Family communication and child behavior problems during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges for many families, with wide-ranging implications for children's mental health. While much prior research has emphasized the developmental harms associated with the pandemic, this study examines how family communication may serve as a protective factor, buffering the impact of COVID-19-related stress on children's internalizing and externalizing problems. Participants included 144 predominantly Black, low-income, and economically marginalized mother-child dyads who were originally enrolled in a longitudinal study of stress and coping (2015-2019). During t

Abnormal Child Behavior in primary school students: A Bayesian network analysis.

The Conners Teacher Rating Scale revised: short (CTRS-R: S) is a widely used psychometric instrument to screen for Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as well as a broader construct of abnormal child behavior. In this study, we aimed to examine the network structure of abnormal child behavior using the CTRS-R: S in a sample of 525 French-speaking primary school students from Belgium. We employed Bayesian network analysis to estimate both the 28-item network and the network with the 8 items with the highest strength centrality, using the PC algorithm and bootstrapping to estimat

Physical punishment, physical abuse, and child behavior problems in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Prior literature has demonstrated the associations of parental physical punishment with child behavior problems and increased risk of physical abuse. In South Korea, physical punishment is a common parenting practice. In 2021, legislative reforms eliminated legal grounds for parental physical punishment in South Korea. However, research on physical punishment, physical abuse, and child behavior problems in the Korean context is scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether physical punishment and physical abuse have unique associations with child behavior problems and whether phy

Psychopathy, Neuroticism, and Abusive Behavior in Low Risk Child Sex Offenders.

Personality traits are considered as an important aspect in the assessment of child sex offenders (CSOs). The current study sought to elucidate the association between neuroticism, psychopathy, and abusive behavior in low risk CSOs. 43 pedophilic CSOs and 21 controls (CTLs) completed the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO-PI-R), Psychopathy Checklist: Screening Version (PCL:SV), and Multiphasic Sex Inventory (MSI). Our results revealed small differences in PCL scores between CSOs and CTLs, with comparatively low levels of psychopathy in both groups. Higher levels of neuroticism were associ

The protective effect of character maturity in child aggressive antisocial behavior.

BACKGROUND: Childhood aggressive antisocial behavior (CD) is one of the strongest predictors of mental health problems and criminal behavior in adulthood. The aims of this study were to describe personality profiles in children with CD, and to determine the strength of association between defined neurodevelopmental symptoms, dimensions of character maturity and CD. METHODS: A sample of 1886 children with a close to equal distribution of age (9 or 12) and gender, enriched for neurodevelopmental and psychiatric problems were selected from the nationwide Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden

Paternal and maternal preconception urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations and child behavior.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal phthalate exposure has been associated with behavioral problems and lower performance on measures of cognitive ability in children. However, the potential effect of phthalate exposure during the sensitive preconception period is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the association of maternal and paternal preconception urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations with child behavior and evaluate potential modification by child sex. METHODS: We used data from 166 children (111 singletons, 26 pairs of twins, and 1 set of triplets) born to 134 mothers and 100 fathers participati

Self-injurious Behavior in a Young Child with Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) is a rare inherited disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase-1. Few reports on behavioral aspects especially self-injurious behavior in LNS patients are available. We report a case of LNS in an 8-year-old male child, who presented with characteristic self-injurious behavior.

Convergence between statistically derived behavior problem syndromes and child psychiatric diagnoses.

The relations between scores on statistically derived behavior problem syndromes and DSM-III diagnoses were examined for 270 clinically referred children aged 6 through 16. Each child's parent completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and was administered the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC)--a structured interview covering DSM-III diagnostic criteria. Numerous behavior problems scales scored from the CBCL were significantly related to one or more diagnoses. The strongest relations were between scores on the Hyperactive, Delinquent, and Depressed scales and diagnoses

Establishing standing and walking behavior in a physically handicapped, retarded child.

A physical therapist using reinforcement procedures worked for three months with minimal success on pulling to standing and pushing off to walk as target behaviors for a physically handicapped retarded child. The physical therapist then changed his role and used an attendant staff to work on the target behaviors in a two-and-one-half month treatment program. Pretreatment and posttreatment time sampling of the child's on-feet behaviors following the treatment program. The results of this one case suggest that the consultation role of the physical therapist might provide a more efficient treatme

Opportunities to improve high-risk behavior screenings during well-child examinations.

BACKGROUND: Nurse practitioners serve an essential role in the completion of age-appropriate adolescent high-risk behavior screenings including tobacco/nicotine, alcohol, illicit drug use, and sexual activity during well-child examinations (WCEs). LOCAL PROBLEM: Midwestern adolescents demonstrate a suboptimal rate of engaging in annual preventative medical visits in comparison to national data. METHODS: This mixed-methods quality improvement pilot sought to evaluate health care providers' beliefs, general clinic processes, and the overall quality of WCEs among adolescents aged 11-17 years in

Persistent Changes in Child Behavior After Early Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: To document longitudinal changes in internalizing and externalizing behavioral symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) sustained in early childhood (i.e., between 18 and 60 months of age). METHODS: Participants (N = 226) were recruited to one of three groups: children with mTBI, typically developing children and orthopedic injured children. The Child Behavior Checklist was used to document the presence of internalizing and externalizing behaviors at 6, 18, and 30 months postinjury. Linear mixed-model analyses were used to examine group effects on the trajectory of interna

Child Sexual Abuse and Compulsive Sexual Behavior: A Systematic Literature Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Information on potential risk factors and clinical correlates of compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) may help inform more effective prevention and treatment measures. Sexual victimization, specifically, child sexual abuse (CSA), has been associated with CSB. RECENT FINDINGS: This systematic review describes 21 studies on the relationship between CSA and CSB. Most studies identified a significant association between CSA and CSB. However, variability in measurements, potential differences in links among community versus clinical samples, relevance of research among college sampl

Multimodal neuroimaging measures and intelligence influence pedophile child sexual offense behavior.

Pedophilia is a heterogeneous disorder for which the neurobiological correlates are not well established. In particular, there are no biological markers identifying individuals with high risk to commit child sexual offense (CSO). Pedophiles with CSO (P+CSO; N = 73), pedophiles without CSO (P-CSO; N = 77), and non-pedophilic controls (NPC; N = 133) were assessed using multimodal structural neuroimaging measures including: cortical thickness (CT), surface area (SA), and white matter fractional anisotropy (FA), as well as full scale IQ (FSIQ) performance. Cortex-wise mediation analyses were used

Parent feeding behavior and child appetite: associations depend on feeding style.

OBJECTIVE: Eating behavior traits measured in early life predict eating behavior and weight trajectories later in development, and may be associated with certain parental feeding behaviors. Our goal was to investigate the relationship between a range of feeding behaviors, and preschoolers' appetitive traits. METHOD: Four hundred thirty-nine parents of UK 3-5 year olds completed scales measuring authoritarian vs. authoritative forms of limiting (Restriction vs. Monitoring) and promoting (Pressuring vs. Prompting) intake, as well as Emotional and Instrumental Feeding. Parents also completed sca

Prenatal exposure to air pollution, maternal psychological distress, and child behavior.

BACKGROUND: Airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants generated by combustion of fossil fuel and other organic material. Both prenatal PAH exposure and maternal psychological distress during pregnancy have each been associated with neurodevelopmental problems in children. The goal was to evaluate potential interactions between prenatal exposure to airborne PAHs and maternal psychological distress during pregnancy on subsequent behavioral problems in children. METHODS: In a longitudinal birth cohort study, 248 children of nonsmoking white women in the coal-burning region

Caregiver-child interactions and the type A coronary-prone behavior pattern.

Type A behavior, 1 of the risk factors for heart disease, is characterized by impatience and competitive achievement striving. An opposing type B pattern is characterized by patience and a lack of competitive achievement striving. Previous observations of mother-child interactions revealed that mothers gave type A and type B children different frequencies of pushing and positive task evaluation. To isolate the effects of type A and B children on caregivers, the present study examined the caregiver behavior of female strangers elicited by boys' type A and B behavior. In addition, it examined wh
