Role of zinc in child health and survival.

Zinc deficiency has been estimated to result in more than 450,000 child deaths annually by increasing the risk of diarrhea and pneumonia mortality. Trials of daily supplemental zinc have shown preventive benefits in childhood diarrhea with a 20% reduction in incidence. Use of zinc in treatment of diarrhea has also been successful in shortening the duration of the episode by 10% and reducing the number of prolonged episodes. The World Health Organization recommends that zinc supplements be used for 10-14 days for every episode of childhood diarrhea along with oral hydration and feeding. Large-s

Is cow's milk harmful to a child's health?

Discussions and debates have recently emerged on the potential positive and negative effects of cow's milk in the paediatric community, also under the pressure of public opinion. The negative effects of cow's-milk consumption seem to be limited to iron status up to 9 to 12 months; then no negative effects are observed, provided that cow's milk, up to a maximum daily intake of 500 mL, is adequately complemented with iron-enriched foods. Lactose intolerance can be easily managed and up to 250 mL/day of milk can be consumed. Allergy to cow's-milk proteins is usually transient. Atopic children may

The effects of PCBs and dioxins on child health.

BACKGROUND/EXPOSURE: Dioxins and PCBs are highly persistent and highly toxic environmental pollutants which at present are derived mainly from waste incineration and food contamination. They are widespread in nature and pollute human food, including breast milk so that basically all children in Europe are exposed to measurable levels. RESULTS/TOXICITY IN CHILDREN: The toxicity of dioxins and PCBs are well described both from animal studies and from a number of human epidemiological studies including several large cohort studies. Especially developmental exposure has been shown to affect endocr

The transformation of child health in the United States.

Social trends and medical progress have fueled major changes in the epidemiology of child health in the United States. Injuries remain a major contributor to childhood illness and death. However, among noninjury causes, chronic illness now accounts for the majority of children's hospital days and deaths. Although mortality rates for all children have fallen dramatically, social disparities persist. Approximately half of all excess deaths among African American children occur during infancy, primarily from extremely premature births, and the remaining portion, primarily from homicide and seriou

Health care for the school-age child.

The research related to health care for school-age children is reviewed. Two major categories are considered, namely, health-risk behavior and psychosocial health. Research related to the emerging issues of homelessness and AIDS is also reviewed. The research completed to date on school-age children's health care is critiqued with an emphasis on the state of the science in nursing. Recommendations for further research are provided.

The effects of poverty on child health and development.

Poverty has been shown to negatively influence child health and development along a number of dimensions. For example, poverty-net of a variety of potentially confounding factors-is associated with increased neonatal and postneonatal mortality rates, greater risk of injuries resulting from accidents or physical abuse/neglect, higher risk for asthma, and lower developmental scores in a range of tests at multiple ages. Despite the extensive literature available that addresses the relationship between poverty and child health and development, as yet there is no consensus on how poverty should be

Parental age and child growth and development: child health check-up data.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to determine whether parental age has any influence on child health. METHODS: Well-baby check-up data at 1 month and at 12 months of age were used. The trends of parental age in association with growth measurements, incidence of physical and developmental abnormalities, occurrence of low birthweight, and maternal history of spontaneous abortion were analyzed. RESULTS: Associations between increasing paternal age and incidence of psychomotor developmental delay at 12 months, increasing paternal and maternal age and increasing birthweight, and incre

An Integrated Mother-Child Intervention on Child Development and Maternal Mental Health.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate an integrated, low-cost, facility-based group intervention designed to promote child care, boost maternal mental-wellbeing, reduce harsh discipline, and improve children's health, nutrition, and early development. METHODS: In Dhaka, 30 neighborhood clusters of a low-income urban community were randomized to intervention or control groups. Mothers with children between 6 and 24 months (n = 300) who self-reported negative discipline were identified and enrolled. A 1-year group intervention included integration of responsive caregiving, nutritional supplementation, caregi

Effectiveness of home visiting in improving child health and reducing child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act established the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program, which provides $1.5 billion to states over 5 years for home visiting program models serving at-risk pregnant women and children from birth to age 5. The act stipulates that 75% of the funds must be used for programs with evidence of effectiveness based on rigorous evaluation research. Home Visiting Evidence of Effectiveness reviewed the home visiting research literature and provided an assessment of the evidence of effectiveness for program model

Children of substance-using mothers: child health engagement and child protection outcomes.

AIM: Maternal substance use has been associated with a range of child risk factors. The study investigated the relationship between engagement with child health services and child protection outcomes for children of substance-using mothers. METHODS: The sample comprised 119 children of mothers who disclosed opiate, amphetamine or methadone use during a maternity admission between 2000 and 2003. Statutory child protection agency and child health engagement information for the first 2 years of life was obtained. The relationship between type of maternal substance use, child health engagement an

Patterns of Social Determinants of Health and Child Mental Health, Cognition, and Physical Health.

IMPORTANCE: Social determinants of health (SDOH) influence child health. However, most previous studies have used individual, small-set, or cherry-picked SDOH variables without examining unbiased computed SDOH patterns from high-dimensional SDOH factors to investigate associations with child mental health, cognition, and physical health. OBJECTIVE: To identify SDOH patterns and estimate their associations with children's mental, cognitive, and physical developmental outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study included children aged 9 to 10 years at baselin

Reproductive health, and child health and nutrition in India: meeting the challenge.

India, with a population of more than 1 billion people, has many challenges in improving the health and nutrition of its citizens. Steady declines have been noted in fertility, maternal, infant and child mortalities, and the prevalence of severe manifestations of nutritional deficiencies, but the pace has been slow and falls short of national and Millennium Development Goal targets. The likely explanations include social inequities, disparities in health systems between and within states, and consequences of urbanisation and demographic transition. In 2005, India embarked on the National Rural

The impact of social inequalities in child health on health visitors' work.

BACKGROUND: Preventive and health promotion work by health visitors ought to reduce social inequalities in child health. However, the increased health and developmental problems among disadvantaged children may constrain health visitors' ability to carry out effective preventive work. This paper measures the impact of socioeconomic inequalities in children's health on the work of health visitors and the amount of preventive work they can provide, with emphasis on 'parenting' programmes. METHODS: Data collected for health visitors' profiles were analysed in an ecological cross-sectional study.

Health Disparities and Child Development After Prematurity.

There is increased recognition that preterm neonates require sequential surveillance to capture the spectrum of coordination, communication, learning, and behavior regulation disorders that may occur in the first 5 years of life and beyond. In particular, the framework of follow-up needs to go beyond the detection of cerebral palsy, blindness, and deafness in the first 2 years of life for only those at highest preterm risk (ie, <28 weeks gestation, with combinations of severe cranial sonographic abnormalities, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and retinopathy of prematurity). In addition, there are

Nutrition, gut microbiota and child health outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Diet is one of the main drivers of the composition and function of the gut microbiota. The scope of this review is to summarize recent studies assessing the role of gut microbiota in clinical pediatric conditions and to review studies using nutritional approaches to favorably modify the gut microbiota to improve health outcomes in children. RECENT FINDINGS: New studies underscore that breastfeeding and infant diet impact the gut microbiome and metagenome. A comprehensive study using metagenomic shotgun sequencing, suggests that the cessation of breastfeeding rather than the

[Participants of mother-child health resort treatments].

Mother-child health-resort treatments have for many years been a major component of rehabilitative and preventive health care for women. The rising significance of health-promotion measures on the one hand, and increased attention to women's health aspects in rehabilitation and prevention on the other, have made in-depth consideration of the issues involved in target-groups, participation in and conceptual potential of mother-child programmes necessary. In a questionnaire study of n = 103 women participating in a mother-child programme, data were collected concerning their life situation, life
