Effect of nutritional rehabilitation on gastric motility and somatization in adolescents with anorexia.

OBJECTIVE: To examine gastric function, as well as the presence of somatic complaints, anxiety symptoms, and functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) before and after nutritional rehabilitation. STUDY DESIGN: Sixteen females with AN and 22 healthy controls with similar demographic profiles were included. Gastric emptying (measured as residual gastric volume) and gastric accommodation (measured as postprandial antral diameter) were assessed with abdominal ultrasonography. Participants completed the Children's Somatization Inventory (CSI), the Scr

Scurvy still exists in children: A case report.

Scurvy is one of the oldest diseases known to mankind. Although rare lately, the clinical suspicion arises in front of a precarious situation or deficient nutrition and food restriction secondary to a psychiatric condition, even in patients with non-specific complaints. We report the observation of a 6 -year- old boy, followed for autism since the age of 3 years and who was admitted for limping, hemorrhagic syndrome, arthritis and weakness. The diagnosis of child abuse was initially suspected but clinical and radiological abnormalities seen were characteristic of scurvy. Vitamin C level was un

[Prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders in children from the rural population of Oaxaca evaluated by means of the Child Development Evaluation test].

INTRODUCTION: During child's growth, access to health, nutrition, opportunities for stimulation, and early learning are necessary for an optimal development of the central nervous system. In rural areas there is a lack of access to them, and this has an impact on children's neurodevelopment. OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence of lag or delay in the development of children in rural areas. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study, with non-probabilistic convenience sampling, where 97 infants from 1 month of age to one day before their 5th birthday, all belo

Pediatric feeding disorders.

Pediatric feeding disorders are common: 25% of children are reported to present with some form of feeding disorder. This number increases to 80% in developmentally delayed children. Consequences of feeding disorders can be severe, including growth failure, susceptibility to chronic illness, and even death. Feeding disorders occur in children who are healthy, who have gastrointestinal disorders, and in those with special needs. Most feeding disorders have underlying organic causes. However, overwhelming evidence indicates that abnormal feeding patterns are not solely due to organic impairment.

Acrodermatitis enteropathica during parenteral nutrition: a pediatric case report.

Background and aim Acrodermatitis enteropathica is a rare disorder characterized by the triad composed by dermatitis, alopecia and diarrhoea. Its acquired form can be caused by inadequate zinc intake, malabsorptive processes, excessive renal or intestinal loss. A rare cause of acquired zinc deficiency is iatrogenic nutritional deficiency due to parenteral nutrition. The diagnosis can be really difficult because the early clinical signs are non-specific and patient's eventual comorbidities can often mask symptoms. Methods: A 5-years-old child affected by several comorbidities, consequent to C.

Conference on "Multidisciplinary approaches to nutritional problems". Rank Prize Lecture. Global nutrition challenges for optimal health and well-being.

Optimal health and well-being are now considered the true measures of human development. Integrated strategies for infant, child and adult nutrition are required that take a life-course perspective to achieve life-long health. The major nutrition challenges faced today include: (a) addressing the pending burden of undernutrition (low birth weight, severe wasting, stunting and Zn, retinol, Fe, iodine and folic acid deficits) affecting those individuals living in conditions of poverty and deprivation; (b) preventing nutrition-related chronic diseases (obesity, diabetes, CVD, some forms of cancer

Micronutrient adequacy and morbidity: paucity of information in children with cerebral palsy.

A literature review was conducted to investigate the status of vitamins and minerals in children with cerebral palsy and the implications of various deficiencies on health outcomes. Children with cerebral palsy commonly have feeding difficulties, which significantly impact their growth, general health, and life expectancy. Current nutritional literature focuses on energy expenditure, with little information available on other parameters, such as micronutrient status. Due to the paucity of micronutrient research in these children, the impacts of deficiencies and benefits in other populations ha

Radiological insights into pediatric undernutrition: Early detection, complications, and a structured evaluation approach.

Despite a decade of significant growth in economic conditions of South Asian countries, people continue to suffer from the pervading problem of malnutrition. High prevalence of child undernutrition despite unprecedented economic growth in these nations have a multifactorial etiology including fetal malnutrition and status of women, inadequate feeding practices in infant and young child, poor household sanitation and untargeted health schemes. The diagnosis and management of malnutrition and its various complications require a multidisciplinary approach and radiologists have a potentially impor

Health literacy and child health promotion: implications for research, clinical care, and public policy.

The nation's leading sources of morbidity and health disparities (eg, preterm birth, obesity, chronic lung disease, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, mental health disorders, and cancer) require an evidence-based approach to the delivery of effective preventive care across the life course (eg, prenatal care, primary preventive care, immunizations, physical activity, nutrition, smoking cessation, and early diagnostic screening). Health literacy may be a critical and modifiable factor for improving preventive care and reducing health disparities. Recent studies among adults have establish

Nutrition-related disorders in Indigenous Australians: how things have changed.

Awareness of a serious Indigenous health problem in Australia did not emerge until the 1960s and 1970s. Much attention was focused at the time on poor pregnancy outcomes, high infant and young child mortality rates, and childhood malnutrition and impaired growth, often associated with high infectious disease burdens. Although that situation has improved somewhat, Indigenous infant and child health is still poor compared with that of other Australian children. Over recent decades, there has been a rapid rise among Indigenous people of nutrition-related "lifestyle" disorders such as obesity, car

An infant with omenn syndrome: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Omenn syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder. It is a disorder that stems from severe combined immunodeficiency in an affected individual. The disease is also of rare occurrence in children in Pakistan because this is the age where this disease usually presents, after having developed in the child. This case report will explore all the reasons that lead to the occurrence of this syndrome while also reflecting on the management profile of the child. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report deals with the discussion of one such child who was diagnosed with Omenn Syndrome after

Nutrition management in chronic liver disease.

Liver has a central role in nutritional homeostasis and any liver disease leads to abnormalities in nutrient metabolism and subsequent malnutrition. All children with chronic liver disease (CLD) must undergo a periodic nutritional assessment--medical history, anthropometry esp. skinfold thickness and mid-arm circumference, and biochemical estimation of body nutrients. Nutritional rehabilitation is catered to the individual child but generally the caloric intake is increased to 130% of RDA by adding glucose polymers and/or MCT oil (coconut oil) with essential fatty acid supplementation (sunflow

Nutritional rickets masquerading as spinal muscular atrophy type III.

Muscle atrophy, weakness, and loss of ambulation in the pediatric population are signs of progressive neuromuscular diseases. Rapid identification of such diseases is important to prevent further progression. In pediatric neurology, it is well understood to include neuromuscular disorders in the differential for such presentations. We report a case of severe nutritional rickets that mimicked the presentation of spinal muscular atrophy type III and discuss the importance of including rickets in the differential for muscle atrophy and loss of ambulation. A 33-month-old African American boy with

Clinical Feeding and Swallowing Evaluation for the School-Based Speech-Language Pathologist.

PURPOSE: From preschool through high school, eating is part of the school day. Children with feeding and/or swallowing issues are now in our neighborhood schools, our responsibility in our care, and require adequate nutrition and hydration to participate in school and access the curriculum. The whole child is in school, including all of their medical, behavioral, social, and educational needs. This clinical focus article describes a holistic process of evaluating swallowing and feeding in the school setting for the school speech-language pathologist (SLP) leading the team supporting the child.

Nutrition and cancer in children.

The information generated to date regarding the nutritional status of children with cancer indicates that malnutrition is seen in patients in the later stages of their malignant disease or is iatrogenic because of their intensive therapy. Malnourished children suffer from inadequate growth, including the potential of delayed cerebral development, and they are more susceptible to infection. Nutritional therapy has been shown to reverse the malnutrition independent of the cancer treatment. In doing so, the nutritional support aids in the delivery of and tolerance to the antitumor therapy. What i
